ONCOLOGY REHABILITATION

The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC,) a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has granted three-year accreditation to Hunterdon Healthcare’s Breast Care Program in Flemington, New Jersey. To achieve voluntary NAPBC accreditation, a breast center demonstrates compliance with the NAPBC standards that look at a center’s leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement. Breast centers seeking NAPBC accreditation undergo a site visit every three years.

As a NAPBC-accredited center, Hunterdon Healthcare is committed to maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care resulting in high-quality care for patients with breast disease. Patients receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient centered services including psycho-social support, and a survivorship care plan that

Due to advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment, there are now an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in the United States. As such, long-term quality of life is an increasingly important issue, with 67% of U.S. cancer patients surviving at least five years. However, even successful cancer treatment can have some side effects.

One potentially very debilitating side effect is chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). CIPN is damage to the nerves (neuropathy) incurred by a patient who has received certain chemotherapeutic medications. Symptoms of neuropathy or nerve damage include numbness and tingling, weakness, and pain, particularly in the hands and feet. This effect was originally thought to be temporary, but up to 40% of cancer survivors experience permanent symptoms and disability related to CIPN.

Oncology Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy opened at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center (HRCC) in 2015, and soon thereafter referrals started coming in from

medical oncologists for CIPN clients who had symptoms of numbness and tingling in their feet which were affecting their balance. Neuropathy symptoms can be so severe they interfere with treatment, leading to a dose reduction or the early stoppage of chemotherapy, which can impact survival. The oncology rehabilitation physical therapists started researching and consulting with other oncology therapists to find other options, in addition, to exercise to improve function and balance. Their hope was to eliminate pain and restore normal sensation in their patient’s feet.

Physical and occupational therapists are specially trained in how to treat the muscular, skeletal, and neurological effects of cancer treatment. According to Barbara Surhoff, PT, Oncology Clinical Specialist and lead Physical Therapist at HRCC’s Oncology Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy department, “After much investigation, we developed a protocol for patients suffering from CIPN that includes menthol lotion, electric stimulation, whole-body vibration, soft tissue and joint mobilization, balance exercises, and a walking program.” She

continued, “We are happy to report that 73% of our patients have had at least 60% improvement in symptoms related to CIPN. Many patients have reported that their symptoms are reduced to a smaller area and have become less intense, and some have had their symptoms disappear completely.” The positive results of therapy have allowed these patients to have better balance, walk more securely and safely, and have greatly improved their quality of life.

Patients with a recent cancer diagnosis, those who are currently in treatment, and those who have completed treatment can all benefit from oncology rehabilitation. Experience has shown that even patients treated for cancer years ago who suffer from pain, numbness and tingling, balance problems and other issues related to nerve damage associated with chemotherapy treatment may benefit from oncology rehabilitation. It’s not necessary to be a patient at HRCC to receive services at HRCC’s Oncology Rehabilitation department, and patients do not need a prescription from their physician. To make an appointment with one of our oncology physical therapists, or to get more information, please call (908) 237-6040.
