We’re your partner in creating community solutions. We bring together caring people to

help others, to solve tough local issues and create a better place for us all. No other

organization unites resources, experts and volunteers to make as great a difference as we do.

and Health – three of our community’s most pressing issues.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROCESS OVERVIEW

Before your gift to United Way of Grayson County is invested in a program or initiative, a

diverse group of volunteers from this community are involved in the decision.

The Community Investment Team (CIT) formed by 40 local volunteers , analyze the most

critical needs in each of the focus areas, develop visions and establish intended results for each

one.

Partner Agencies apply for program funding based on the visions and intended results in the

three areas.

The CIT volunteers review the program applications and conduct site visits to the partner

agencies to learn precisely what their programs do for the community, and how efficient and

effective the partner agencies are at meeting the key community needs.

After interviewing the partner agencies regarding their programs, the Community Investment

Teams make their funding recommendations to the Community Investment Committee.

The Community Investment Committee consist of 8 local volunteers who analyze the CIT

funding recommendations, approve and recommend the United Way of Grayson County Board

of Directors.

The United Way of Grayson County Board of Directors has the final approval of the funding

recommendations.

Funded Partner Agencies are required to submit semi-annual reports on the progress of their

program’s outcomes. This allows United Way of Grayson County to hold our partner agencies

accountable and see the community impact of their programs.

How much of the money raised in Grayson County goes to United Way World Wide?

One Penny ($0.01) of every dollar collected goes to United Way Worldwide. The value of this

investment is returned back to our community in various ways such as: corporate gifts, use of

UW brand, national recognition, networking with other UW’s, training and staff development and

national campaigns.

What are our local salaries?

$64,030, CEO. Local salaries are determined by people just like you. Volunteers from our

community look at budgets and take into consideration various factors to determine what the

salaries are for the staff.

Why should I give to United Way of Grayson County and not directly to an agency?

UWGC is used by many companies to make a difference because of its proven process and

system that brings a business mindset to a heart driver industry. Although you can designate

your gift, most find that giving to the community fund touches all walks of life and has a bigger

impact.

How much money is invested into the programs agencies provide?

$0.84 of each dollar is invested into the 33 programs and 19 agencies that the United Way of

Grayson County funds.

Roughly one million dollars ($1,000,000) a year over the past 10 years is invested and

entrusted to our neighbors who need it most.

Where does the money come from?

65% is employee giving.

25% is corporate giving.

10% is individuals, foundations and civic clubs.

Patient was sent home without treatment and was told lifestyle was the contributing factor. The patient came to see Dr. Coble, who assessed patient and transferred her care to Children's Medical Center. Patient was diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis and received treatment over an 11 day hospital stay. CASA - Beth, a disabled child, medical and psychological needs were not being met by her parents. They placed her into a mental healthcare facility and refused to pick her up when the hospital reported that they could not continue to care for Beth when contacted by CPS they relinquished their rights. The volunteer assigned to the case invested a large portion of time speaking with Beth's psychologist and counselors and it was determined that she had an undiagnosed condition which through treatment she was able to make progress in overcoming. Beth was placed in a group home that specializes in children with challenges and she continues to make great strides with the hopes that she will be able to be adopted into a forever home.

He was already a wheelchair user since the age of 4 but now needed a custom wheelchair to fit his body after his major surgery. The Center partners with a local DME business in order to complete this and other wheelchair evaluations. His evaluation for a new custom wheelchair was completed and the client was also referred to our local DARS office to receive funding in order to modify his car to use with hand controls only. These referrals and a new chair/modified car will allow S to return to work – something he has only dreamed about for the past 2 years Habitat for Humanity- Habitat for Humanity built House #30 to meet Energy Star standards. The standards are more rigorous each year and this year's requirements include having a comprehensive water management system in place. Each house is scored, based on total efficiency, thermal enclosure, and a ventilation system that is designed and installed for optimal performance. The score for House #30 was 65--a full 20 points better than the required score of 85. The rater said, "I wish all my builders followed Habitat's practices. This is an extremely well-built house."

HEALTH TO HELP PROVIDE PROGRAM(S) ADDRESSING ISSUES SUCH AS DENTAL CARE, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, TEEN PREGNANCY, COUNSELING, TRANSPORTATION AND BASIC HEALTHCARE.

What’s happening in Grayson County? Four Rivers Outreach - Dental Clinic Local/state research and reporting indicated a need for dental care for the uninsured and underinsured in Grayson County. Four Rivers proposed a program to provide an adult dental clinic for the indigent, uninsured and underinsured for Grayson County. The services will be offered free to those who meet 50% of the median family income, those over, will be offered services on a sliding scale basis. Four Rivers Dental Clinic is completed with all the equipment tested and operational. In 2014 the clinic evaluated 125 patients with treatment of extractions and fillings on 53. The clinic has 7 volunteer dentist and 1 full time dental assistant/manager. Examples of United Way of Grayson County’s response Summer 2013 to Summer 2017 United Way of Grayson County awarded Four River the first health initiative grant. The program receives $50,000 per year for the four year time period. When one young woman was finished with her appointment today she came out crying and stated "I never thought I would ever get to see a dentist." It was truly an emotional and happy moment to see how grateful these people were who cannot afford dental work but were blessed today with this miracle.

RESULTS

United Way of Grayson County helped make it happen:

Outcomes provided for July 2013- December 20013

67* children increased physical activity and knowledge related to fitness and nutrition and its

effect of childhood obesity.

Boys & Girls Club Sherman – Fan Club

129,474* meals were served to 1,009* Grayson County residents. The average cost per meal

for the reporting period is $5.54*

Meals on Wheels- Home Delivered & Congregate Meal Services

145* children were matched with mentors. At the 90 day anniversary for new matches made in

Grayson Co., 83.6% of the Community-Based matches reported a strong relationship built

within the first three months of their match while 87.2% of School-Based matches reported a

strong relationship was formed within the first 3 months of the match.

Big Brother Big Sister- Youth Mentoring

Computer Training - The client must demonstrate basic computer skills or attend computer

classes. 24* Students attended with 80% graduating – 19* Graduates

Four Rivers Outreach – Career Center

170* children were in foster care; volunteers assisted family members in accessing services and

resources to either help in being reunited with their children or assisted the family members with

whom the children were placed with at the time. 35 children were either returned home to

improved circumstances, placed permanently with relatives, or adopted into forever families. All

children have maintained safety.

CASA of Grayson County

234* clients served had an increased sense of safety, increased sense of children's safety,

decrease in feelings of isolation and an increase awareness of community resources and

options due to services provided by the Crisis Center.

Crisis Center- Crisis Center Shelter Victims Services

149* clients were served with mental health services that are provided to facilitate emotional

healing for child victims of sexual and physical abuse. Mental health services are provided to

facilitate emotional healing for non-offending family members and support in the care and

protection of their children.

Children’s Advocacy Center- Counseling Services

331* clients served. The community partner provided uninsured and underinsured

parents/caregivers access to therapy services regardless of their ability to pay for services.

Provided uninsured and underinsured parents/caregivers access to psychological testing and

evaluation services to determine diagnosis and treatment plan for client success. Assist

parents/caregivers to better understand their child's behavior/diagnosis as well as family

functioning and work toward renewing, repairing and rebuilding family relationships. –

CAMPAIGN BASICS

What exactly is a workplace campaign?

A workplace campaign takes place over a set period of time. Company CEO’s and campaign

coordinators (like you!) encourage employees to give to United Way of Grayson County. You

achieve this by sharing news and information about the needs in the community and how we

are addressing these needs – and inviting them to participate in company activities. To use a

sports analogy, you are the coach and your coworkers are your team. You want to get them

pumped up, excited and “in it to win it.” The ultimate goal? You and your company come

together and collectively raise money for those in our community who so need it.

What’s my role as a campaign coordinator?

Work closely with the United Way of Grayson County staff members to develop an

effective campaign for your organization.

Recruit and coordinate a team of company volunteers to help you run the campaign.

Make a personal gift to United Way of Grayson County.

Promote the campaign throughout your organization and ask everyone to give.

Coordinate the distribution and collection of campaign materials and pledges.

Prepare and submit a final report and pledge forms.

Thank all campaign participants.

TAILOR YOUR CAMPAIGN TO FIT YOUR COMPANY’S NEEDS Work with your Director of Resource Development to map out a plan that will be easy to implement and well-positioned for optimal success. Smaller, single-site campaigns

Don’t try to do too much!

Think about what strategies work best for your company. If you have a small company,

don’t try to have an overly complex campaign.

Make sure to include people from different departments on your planning team to help.

Multi-site campaigns

If your headquarters and branches aren’t all in the same county, ask your Resource

Development Officer to help you located the contacts for other counties.

Utilize a team captain model when forming your campaign team. The most important

thing when forming a team is to try to make sure that all the different sites and

departments have representatives to help with their portion of the campaign planning.

Make sure to include representatives from different departments, as you can utilize their

skills and contacts. Also try to include leadership wherever possible so that decisions

can easily be made.

Team captains can help run the campaign in each area of your company so you don’t

have to do it all! They can directly contact United Way staff to plan events, request

speakers and order supplies for their department, store or division.

Online-only campaigns

Some companies don’t use paper pledge forms and want to have a campaign that has a

low impact on the environment. While doing this, what is the best way to have a

successful, yet low-key campaign?

E-mail testimonials from employees that are passionate about the cause.

WHAT’S WORKED FOR OTHER COMPANIES

ATMOS Energy employees have a fun campaign and work together to make it a success. In 2013 the employees built a grill. The racks on the grill had cranks so they could be lowered closer to the heat or raised. They sold raffle tickets for two months and announced the winner in November at the United Way Campaign Update press conference. The management also cooks a BBQ lunch with all the trimmings and homemade desserts. After lunch let the races begin. Video horse races with monopoly money are a big hit. The employees can buy in to play and there are fantastic prizes and giveaways. This is a fun filled bunch that work together to meet and exceed their goal. ATMOS Energy was awarded 2013 Best Work Place Campaign (small campaign

division)

Landmark Bank has a campaign committee with a member at each branch. This person is in charge of that branch's fundraiser and responsible for getting all the forms back. If the committee member is new to the UW program, the committee chair will go to their branch and talk to them about the forms and fundraising ideas. The branches have a competition between them to see who can bring in the most fundraising money (there is no prize, just bragging rights). Progress report emails are sent to all the branches every few weeks. The Fair Share/ Leadership Givers receive four hours of vacation and we have drawings for gift cards (some with every giver in the pot and some with only FS/ Lead givers). Some of the 2013 fundraising was: asking local businesses for donations, a chili lunch several bake sales and taking donations at the drive-thru. We also have a UW rep or an agency spokesperson at the bigger branches' monthly employee meeting.

WHAT’S WORKED FOR OTHER COMPANIES

Both the Sherman and Whitesboro Ebby Halliday offices were very involved. Since we are in the business of "moving", we included our clients as well. If they were moving out of a house, we asked them to donate what they did not want to move. If they were moving into a home, we asked them to come by the garage sale, and maybe purchase something for their new house. So everyone had a client that was buying or selling, and we ended up with great donations, and a great sale. Even the other businesses near us would watch us bringing in items and kept asking when the sale was, because they did not want to miss it. It truly was a Community Effort! Ebby Halliday was awarded 2013 Highest Per Capita Giving (small campaign division)

2013 campaign we had a big silent auction for some amazing stuff that everyone wanted. It was a fight I’ll definitely say that. That’s where we received about 300.00 of our money. Then we had a contest with the managers to see who would give the most. Everyone kept going back and forth so that helped too. As for everyone else in the company we usually just take what we can get, even if it’s just a dollar. We mostly thrive on getting 100% every year and this was the 3rd year in a row. ANNUAL AWARDS CELEBRATION The awards are given in two divisions small campaigns of $50,000 or less and large campaigns of $50,000 or more.

Highest Per Capita Giving Award Every year, United Way of Grayson County gives the company with the highest average gift per employee capita including employee and corporate gifts combined.

Largest Dollar Increase Award

This award is given to the company that had the largest dollar increase over last year’s campaign.

Best Employee Participation Award

This award is given to the company that had the best employee driven campaign, to build awareness through special events and fundraisers.

Best Workplace Campaign Award

This award is given to the company that used the United Way “best practices” and ideas that have proven to enhance their campaigns. This company had an increase in giving and/or participation, promoted awareness and volunteerism at the corporate and employee level.

Best Overall Campaign Award

This award is given to the company that excels in all areas of a United Way campaign, promoted awareness, volunteerism, participation, year round involvement and increase in giving.

United Way understands there are many needs in our community. By identifying our basic

needs and focusing our efforts and resources on addressing those needs we can measure the

better tomorrow. It’s about creating hope and lasting change.

What is United Way of Grayson County doing to meet basic needs?

2013 campaign we raised $1.366 million to help people avoid hunger and gain access to the

public benefits they need to get back on their feet. However, the pressing needs continue - and

so does our response. That’s why we are working to raise another $1.4 million in the 2014

Campaign.

Thus far 18 community partners and 31 programs have received grants totaling almost $1

million dollars thanks to the response – 50* children have increased knowledge of the effects of

bullying and drug & alcohol abuse. 2* new habitat homes were built, 244* families received

hospice care & 172* children/youth increased self-sufficiency and participation in daily activities

with rehabilitation.

How should I ask for money in this tough economy?

Even though times are challenging, those of us who still have the ability to give can make a

tremendously positive difference in the lives of so many. United Way of Grayson County is

focused on helping the most vulnerable in our county. We are working to provide food, shelter

and hope for thousands of families who are facing hunger, homelessness and healthcare. If a

person is interested in supporting those less fortunate in our community, giving to United Way of

Grayson County is the wisest way to do it.

In this tough economy, the most vulnerable among us are struggling to survive – and those of

that can, need to do more. Making a gift – whatever amount – through payroll deduction or one-

time gift is a wonderful way to make a tremendous impact for so many who desperately need

our help.

round?

We offer an array of ways to become more involved year-round.

Your company can host free, monthly lunch and learn sessions. We’ll bring experts

into your workplace for fun and engaging one-hour information sessions on a variety

of topics.

Grayson County Spirit of Caring Award.

What does it cost to run United Way of Grayson County?

United Way of Grayson County invest nearly 84 cents of every dollar donated in community

solutions. The other 15.8 cents go to United Way of Grayson County’s functional expenses,

which include salaries, marketing and fundraising.

What is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization?

501(c)(3) is the tax status code for nonprofit charitable organizations. Donations to these

organizations are tax deductible. Donors may direct their gift to any 501(c)(3) through United

Way of Grayson County. We do not accept direct pledges to organizations without 501(c)(3)

How much does it cost if I direct my gift to an agency or another United Way?

United Way of Grayson County believes that the best way to make an impact is to give to the

general fund. However, it is still your gift and we honor designations to any non-profit. Here are

the options:

Any other United Way there is no cost or fee

Any United Way partner agency there is no cost or fee

Non United Way agencies there is a 10% processing fee

What United Way of Grayson County investments do not charge fees?

No fees are charged on gifts to United Way of Grayson County, United Way of Grayson County

priorities or initiatives.

How long should our campaign run?

The average campaign runs for two weeks. Longer campaigns often take up additional time

and resources for both the campaign coordinator and the employees. A two-week campaign is

the perfect amount of time to kick off your campaign, get your message out effectively and make

your ask without overburdening your staff with extra announcements and activities.

What is Leadership Giving and how will it impact my campaign?

Leadership giving is a recognition program to encourage employees to make high-impact gifts

of $1,000 or more. Strategies include a customized “ask” to employees to give at a higher level,

and specific personalized recognition within the company and United Way of Grayson County.

It can also be motivating for you and your colleagues to see the number to Leadership Givers

and establish goals around it.

Companies will often honor employees who give at the Leadership level by having an event to

thank them and ask for support again. Special thank you’s or certificates are also best practices

for this.
