A MESSAGE FROM OUR INTERIM CEO

Welcome everyone to our last community news for 2019.

On the 13th November we farewelled our CEO Suzanna Barry after 10 years in the role and 20 years with CLRS. She has been a fantastic leader of our organisation and we were delighted so many people came together

to acknowledge her significant contribution.

We have recently also held our AGM and announced Kim Boland as the recipient of the annual Cletus Gilmour Fundraising Award – be sure to check out the story later in the news.

We are looking forward to our Opening Doors Project in Maiden Street, Moama being completed and starting the design and planning of our next Opening Doors Project which will be developed in Barry St, Echuca.

Heading into the busy Christmas and New Year period we are getting ready for our annual Christmas event at Apex Park on the 3rd December and reminding everyone to sign up for Johnno’s Run 2020 and help keep those New Year resolutions we all set for ourselves.

CLETUS GILMOUR FUNDRAISING AWARD WINNER - KIM BOLAND

Kim Boland resides at 5 Minor Street Echuca, the first building project to benefit from the inaugural Johnno’s Run in 2014.

Kim has experienced firsthand the benefits of Johnno’s Run and wanted to give back and help others, so in 2018 team ‘Keeping it Wheel’ led by Kim was born.

Kim embraced training weekly which required extra effort as Kim had only just recovered from a hip replacement. The fundraising aspect of Johnno’s Run was her passion. From cashing cans, making and selling cupcakes or running raffles Kim was able to raise $4,050 topping the 2018 leader board of Johnno’s Run. Propelling Kim along to keep on fundraising was her wish to “Beat Suzanna”!

Kim achieving her goal of participating in Run Melbourne, including standing up from her wheelchair to walk over the finish line, was a highlight not only for Kim, but for the entire Johnno’s Run team. The look of accomplishment on her face was priceless. Kim’s achievements sent a strong message that people with disability can make significant contributions to the community.

STAFF PROFILE - LISA HAMILTON

Lisa worked as an Executive Assistant from the age of 17. It was after a stint of volunteering in aged care that she turned to community services and wanted a change out of the office chair. Lisa completed a Certificate III in Aged Care, Home and Community Care and Disability. She worked in aged care for 18 months prior to joining CLRS as a Direct Support Professional in October 2016. Lisa was keen to have a greater impact and involvement with the clients.

Lisa finds it rewarding helping clients enjoy their daily life and becoming a part of the

Kim wasn’t ready to stop there so in 2019 she signed up for her 2nd Johnno’s Run. Kim’s commitment encouraged others to be involved; some joining Kim’s team of ‘Keeping it Wheel’ and others starting up their own teams. Kim’s dedication to the weekly training sessions at Scenic Drive inspired others to become interested and eventually join in. Kim’s commitment has been the impetus for others to start walking and exercising on a regular basis. This is a great outcome and is attributed to Kim’s leadership, her commitment to fundraising and increasing services for people with disability.

Kim and her team began fundraising again in 2019 and team ‘Keeping it Wheel’ again topped the Johnno’s Run leader board, raising $7,500 for the Moama Opening Doors Project. Kim intends to keep fundraising for Johnno’s Run and the Opening Doors Project.

In 2018 Kim was invited to join the CLRS fundraising committee, which she has embraced. Kim also volunteers at Recyclability and Murray River Tea Rooms with enthusiasm and pride. She is always happy to put her hand up to assist with selling raffle tickets and various other fundraising activities.

community. The things that stand out most to Lisa are helping clients achieve their licence, going to an event for the first time like the Big Bash and getting out in the community.

Lisa was a part of the 2017 Johnno’s Run Team along with her family. They raised over $500 and really enjoyed the atmosphere and participation. Lisa loves her job and the happiness it brings to her and the clients.
