Historic Environment Division (HED)(Iain Greenway)

• Role - Supporting and sustaining vibrant communities and a strong

economy though realising the significant, ongoing value of our historic

environment.

• Archaeological heritage provide a powerful sense of connection between

people and place, which in turn supports our sense of identity and our

wellbeing as individuals and a society.

• Historic environment is a vital and non-renewable component of our

economy, generating an estimated £532 million annually, and creating and

sustaining around 10,000 jobs.

• HED works in collaboration with individuals, organisations, the private and

third sector top record, protect, conserve and promote heritage.

• HED provides expertise, skills and seeks to improve the understanding,

caring for appreciation of our heritage, ensuring a suitable balance

between representing a rich past and building a successful future.

Public Record Office of NI(PRONI)(Maggie Smith)

• Role - To receive and preserve public records

To make public records accessible to the public

To promote good records management, including retention

and disposal

• Targets for PRONI include

At least 20,000 visits to PRONI

At least 13.5 million page views on PRONI web pages

Implement and further develop the digital repository

Put in place arrangements for an Oral History Archive of the

conflict

Make Statutory Rules to facilitate the release of court and inquest

records

Irish Language Bill and Languages Strategies Team

• Support development of Irish, Ulster Scots and Sign Language, including through N/S Language Body, Líofa initiative, Sign Language

• Development of the Gaeltacht Quarter Action Plan.

• Secure agreement on proposals for Irish Language legislation

• Agree approach to the implementation of Irish language & Ulster-Scots strategies

Arts and Creative Industries

• Provide funding for the arts, set arts policy and support arts based initiatives.

• Culture and Arts Strategy

• Governance of Arts Council and NI Screen

• Support/develop Creative Industries

• Community Festivals Fund and Cultural Programme

• Investment of nearly £4m in the sector by March 2016

• 82 specific projects were delivered under three workstreams

• Leading on the development of the Ulster-Scots Language and culture

development initiative
