PUBLIC COMMENT

Chair Watson asked if there were any comments from the public. There were no comments.

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS

Vice President Kent Scheffel provided the Board with an update on the college’s Enrollment. The

number of credit hours at the Nelson Campus continue to increase and we continue to be above the state

average in the percentage of district residents enrolling in classes at Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark

enrolls 3.85 percent of its district population, compared to the state average which is 2.79 percent.

Efforts to increase enrollment will focus on retention. In addition to additional contact by advisors,

Lewis and Clark is also making other strides to aid retention including group advising, creating personal

academic plans for students, priority registration for groups with large attrition rates, developing faculty

mentors for transfer students, creating advising liaisons to create stronger connections for students, and

increased automated phone calls and communication with students using various media channels.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

President Dale Chapman provided a Construction Projects Status Report to the board, outlining the

numerous projects currently underway, or being prepared for bid. Included in his report were the final

punch list items at the field station, the current renovations underway at the St. Patrick’s building, the

utility improvements planned for the northern end of the Godfrey Campus, the Montessori School

construction project, the Trimpe ATC and Lincoln School renovations and the workforce training

facility currently being designed. Most of these projects are in the architectural design stage. Dates for

these capital projects will be established soon.

Dean of Liberal Arts Jill Lane recognized music faculty member Susan Parton Stanard for her recent

performance with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus at Carnegie Hall. Lane said Stanard is in her first

season with the St. Louis Symphony, and was invited to take part in the competitive audition process

last year with the symphony. Dean Lane noted that “Susan exemplifies the standard of excellence set by

the entire Lewis and Clark music program. Her participation in the St. Louis Symphony Chorus

demonstrates the depth of her talent, which she offers not only at Carnegie hall, but to our very own

Lewis and Clark students. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to have an instructor who has

performed at Carnegie Hall.”

Dean of Liberal Arts Jill Lane also presented the latest findings from the Student Success Center, which

demonstrate the positive results of the efforts being made to increase tutoring services for Lewis and

Clark students. This year the Center was able to increase site locations, site hours, days of operation and

provide tutors in specific disciplines. Lane reported a student who visits one of the 10 Student Success

Center locations is 1.5 times more likely to succeed in a course than a student who does not visit. The

success rate of students visiting a center is 7 percent higher than those who do not visit. Lane said

success was measured by a final grade of A, B or C. Additionally, the retention rate of students who

visited the center is 16 percent higher than those who have not visited one of the centers.

Vice President Lori Artis shared with the Board a story about a recent Lewis and Clark graduate –

Whitney Joy. Before coming to Lewis and Clark, Joy earned a bachelor’s in communications in 2005.

After waiting tables for many years while searching for work in her field, she enrolled in the college’s

Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Joy earned her degree in 2012, attained offers immediately,

and now works as an OTA and resides in Memphis, Tenn. “Whitney is just one example of an individual

who has discovered that an associate degree is sometimes more valuable than a bachelor’s degree,” Artis

said. A recent national news story from CNN Money states that 30 percent of Americans with associate

degrees earn more than those with bachelor degrees, and they find work faster. Artis said that negative

perceptions of community colleges and associate degrees being of “lesser value” are fading in today’s

economy. “As we see every day, more and more students who have earned bachelor’s degrees in various

fields return to Lewis and Clark to take part in one of our 30-and-out programs, in an effort to earn a

career skill and attain employment,” Artis said. A recent study by Georgetown University estimates that

there are 29 million jobs paying middle class wages ($35,000-75,000) today that require only an

associate degree; however, there are not enough associate degree graduates being produced by

community colleges to fill these jobs. In addition to attaining a higher wage, earning an associate degree

vs. a bachelor’s degree can also save a student more than $100,000 in the process. “The average

associate degree graduate will pay approximately $6,200,” Artis said. “A bachelor’s degree from a four-

year, private residential university goes for more than $158,000. These recent studies are selling points

for community colleges, and particularly Lewis and Clark, as we have already turned our focus on

programs in the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics field with our recent Department of Labor

TAACCCT grant, aimed at increasing the number of graduates in numerous skilled labor fields. Our

graduates not only make a great investment when they choose to earn an associate degree at Lewis and

Clark, they are also making a huge impact on our regional economy,” Artis said.

Director of Institutional Research Dennis Krieb presented the latest comparative data report provided to

Lewis and Clark by the National Center for Education Statistics, which produces the Integrated

Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Feedback report. IPEDS collects institution-level data

on students, student charges, program completions, faculty, staff and finances. These data are used at

the federal and state level for policy analysis and development; at the institutional level for

benchmarking and peer analysis; and by students and parents to aid in the college search process. Lewis

and Clark’s comparative cohort includes 30 schools from 7 different states. Krieb said that the data in

this year’s report overall boasts very well for Lewis and Clark, exhibiting Lewis and Clark’s lower

tuition and fees than the cohort average ($3,192 vs. $3,407), lower net price ($4,887 vs. $7,323), higher

averages in amounts of institutional aid students receive ($3,388 vs. $2,654), above average completion

rates and a higher than average investment in instruction and academic support. “It’s obvious by the

charts that Lewis and Clark is putting its money in the classroom, Krieb said. “When compared to the

average of these 30 institutions, Lewis and Clark’s core expenses per full time enrollment in instruction

is $5,546 vs. $4,472.” Krieb said that the overall findings from the latest IPEDS report ranks Lewis and

Clark very favorably among these 30 peer institutions.
