OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH Report # 130 A

April 2003

Responses To Middle States Self-Study Current Student Questionnaire

Community College of Philadelphia April 2003

During the first several weeks of the Spring 2003 term, current CCP students were

surveyed in order to provide input to the Middle States Self-Study process. The

questionnaire that was used for the survey was based on questions that arose in Middle

States Standard Committees. Co-chairs of the committees identified areas of inquiry that

they hoped would inform their committee’s assessment. (The following link will take you

to the Middle States website which contains information concerning the nature of the

Standard Committees: http://www.ccp.edu/vpacaff/middlestates/index.htm )

The response rate to the survey was excellent thanks to the cooperation of faculty

who were asked to provide class time for students to complete the questionnaire. Nearly

all of the spring courses that were invited to participate in the survey did so. In all, 1,031

students completed usable questionnaires and this report provides a summary of their

feedback.

Titles for each of the following tables contain the associated question number so

the summary results can easily be traced back to the original questionnaire (a copy

appears after this introduction). As an example, Q6 refers to Question # 6 on the

questionnaire. Three types of tables are included in this report. Tables with an ‘A’ tacked

onto the question number (ex. Q8.A) contain the number (Count) and percent (%) of

students who selected the designated response. Tables with a ‘B’ extension contain the

Minimum and Maximum values provided as a response to questions as well as the

average response (Mean) and the Median response (mid-point response). Both of these

types of tables have been provided for questions with Likert-scale responses (ex. Q8,

Q10, Q12). The numerical values associated with the Likert-scales appear at the bottom

of the B tables. For ease of interpretation, these scales have been constructed so that

larger values for the mean and median indicate more positive responses.

A third table type has been used to summarize responses to open-ended questions.

These tables contain a listing of verbatim responses provided by students. These tables

reflect responses to questions 9, 13, and 17.
