We have a special relationship with 6th grade students from Godwin Heights. They have cometo campus to do experiments, and this year, to celebrate our centennial, we made them 100 experiment kits , so that they could do experiments at their school.

Most of these students have gone on to earn B.S. degrees in science, and many are now in graduate school, optometry school, pharmacy school, or medical school. Several are working as scientists in industry.
• GVSU/GRCC NSF Research ProgramThese students will soon earn B.S. degrees at GVSU. One will be entering an M.D./Ph.D. program and the other will be entering medical school.
• Van Andel Summer Intern Research Program These students have gone on to earn B.S. degrees in science at Hope and WMU, and are now in medical school.
Many of these students have presented their work at national conferences and several students are co-authors on papers published in peer-reviewed science journals.
Interactions with Local Companies, Institutes, and Government Agencies
- Organizing and participating in the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education at GVSU
- Visiting Perrigo, the Van Andel Institute, and the Grand Rapids Waste Water Treatment Plant
- Hosting guest speakers from Corium, Gentex, Pfizer, and Amway
For example, next semester in PH 125, a scientist from Amway will talk about how the concepts of simple harmonic oscillation and damped harmonic motion are used in skin aging measurement, and how cosmetic products are developed to fight skin aging.

National Science Foundation GrantJennifer Batten and Bernard Liburdwrote a grant worth $166,000 to obtaina GC-MS for student use.
Some Things You Might Not Have KnownElaine Kampmueller wrote The Michigan Environmental Literacy Plan as part of the No Child Left Inside Act of 2013.
Tom Neils helped screen and select questions for the Science section ofthe MEAP exams and wrote questions
for the Science section of the MME.
Jennifer Batten, Bill Faber and Tom Neils have all served as grant reviewers for the National Science Foundation.
Joe Hesse has been working to help keep Big Brower Lake clean and weed-free by acting as an advisor to the lake improvement association.
Bill Faber serves on the Board of Directors at Blandford Nature Center.
Will Millar will be a guest speaker at the Chaffee Planetarium at the Public Museum next semester when the planetarium will be screening 'Cosmos - a Spacetime Odyssey‘.
