Dear Readers,I am sometimes overwhelmed with how good life has been to me. Never

have I been without ‘choice or opportunity’, the two things I believe to be fundamental to a good human existence.

Being born Zoroastrian Parsi is something we either take for granted or put too much emphasis on.

Either we couldn’t care less and don’t pay attention and squander away our Baugs and our way of life or we pay too much attention and that leaves

The thing is, when we are born into a culture or a Religion we don’t have much of a ‘choice’ about it. We are born into its customs, its fundamental thoughts and its rituals. We are taught to live life as seen best by the Religion and we are judged by parameters within its fold.

If you are not hiding under a stone in some Baug in Mumbai and have taken a basic interest in current affairs you will be familiar with the hardships that Muslims (also an Indian Minority Community) are facing when it comes to Education and Accommodation across Mumbai.

channa and the not so rich are left to overcrowd small spaces which were built for them in the

And here we are…. With hundreds of Educational Institutes (like the Patuck Trust on Pg. 10) offering us solid, good subsidized education and yet we turn our noses up and leave our children under-educated. (Flat che… to set che!)

What I am trying to say is…. We have no choice but to live as Good Parsi and Irani Zoroastrians but we do have the choice to gain from every opportunity we are presented with by virtue of our heritage and lineage. Allow yourself to be overwhelmed by the good that you can do and create by being Zoroastrian.

Freyan.

Dear Editor, Hope you are doing well and

I have worked in India and in Gulf, Kuwait, Bahrain and Dubai for 20 long years, managing various nationalities. I am currently Vice President of a startup perfumery marketing company at Nariman Point and am willing to devote my time for the Community matters.

I do not know any Trustees or big person in our Community, as I belong to a poor Parsi family who has grown in hierarchy through sheer dedication and hard work.

I am willing to take up the Honorary Trustee’s position at BPP to do good for our Community, and need to know from you as to how we can

I am very busy at work but feel that time has come to put my organising ability to work for keeping up the name of our Community, which unfortunately has gone to dogs, rather then merely writing to you as an editor, and crying over spilt milk.Gev Dalal

Dear Mr. Aspi Mistry and our very own Editor,

Regarding your article in Parsi Times of 30th May, ‘An entirely Spiritual way to spend Sunday’, I would prefer any other day Monday or Wednesday for an Introductory sessions with the Brahma Kumaris, to study and practice meditation as a spiritual addition to life, to understand my soul better and to move to understanding God better.

More than 7 decades back Meheramai Dhalla had started Theosophical Society classes for the residents of Rustom Baug which brought a spiritual change in the lives of more than 30 members. I was young then and ready to grasp any new experience with my mother and other ladies and I can say our lifestyle changed for the better.

of my visit to Mt. Abu with my husband and visiting the Brahma Kumari’s Mission headquarters. Circumstances and lifestyle didn’t permit me to go deeper but now at a ripe old age the music bhajans performed by the sisters/brothers plays a major part in helping me to forget my aches and pains and relax, slipping into a meditative slumber.

I am very anxious to organize spiritual musical sessions at my residence in 16/1 Rustom Baug once or twice a week as I have a large collection of CD which have been my spiritual healers and guides.

I welcome all Zoroastrians who are interested to join me.

I request Mr. Aspi Mistry to take the lead and you dear Freyan to publicize this soul stirring project.Mrs. Kumi J. Daroowala

Dear Editor,BPP boardroom fracas: Why

are we not surprised? Why we are not even getting angry now?

I take the liberty to put forth my unbiased views in this matter.

What is the entire fracas about? As a layman who has read all that was written in

the concerned parties, the photographs etc., what I would conclude is the following:

1) The BPP board room is used by the Trustees as a battle ground to settle personal scores, wash their obviously dirty linen in public and all that at the cost of another person who happens to be a caterer at one of the properties run by the BPP.

2) The Trustees have all the time at their disposal to give

for their devious and shameful deeds but no time for the welfare of our Community.

3) The Trust funds are

luminaries and government

being zilch.Let us take the case of the

fracas regarding the Gamadia Hostel caterer. I am stating the following based on the reports read by me in the media as well as some home work done by me in this matter.

1) I am sure the BPP Trustees were all aware of the contract

signed between the Caterer Mr. Keki Darji and the BPP after due diligence and full approval of the board. Hence

in the know of the terms and conditions of the contract. All the issues raised by Mr. Desai could have been discussed in a more gentlemanly way by the Trustees amongst themselves in the boardroom prior to calling Mr. Keki Darji for the meeting.

2) The terms and conditions of the contract have been strictly adhered to by the caterer or else why would his contract have been renewed by

Letters to the Editorthe Trustees from Jan 2013 to May 2014. Moreover where was the Trustee Mr. Desai all this while if he has had problems with the T&C of the contract? Has Mr. Desai himself ever visited the Gamadia Hostel premises even once or for that matter how many of the Trustees visited the hostel to understand the problems faced by the resident students? At least after so many years the youngsters are getting wholesome Parsi food which is a big compensation for them when they are staying away from their families. I gather that they have signed a petition to the effect that they want the present caterer to continue?

3) If Mr. Yazdi Desai can provide the same quality and quantity of wholesome Parsi food for a subsidized rate of Rs.30/- per meal and get the Rs. 1 lac rent per month for the Trust then why not? He should, in the interest of the Trust set the procedure in place to get a caterer who can meet all their demands. But, this has to be done in a proper, diligent, prudent and graceful manner rather than throwing allegations, abuses, pencils and chairs at each other and wanting to settle personal animosity at the cost of the Community’s welfare.

4) From reliable sources

I have come to know that the present caterer Mr. Keki Darji is carrying on the legacy of his predecessor late Mr. Firdosh Shroff by sending extremely

Here someone is living up to the tradition and values of the forefathers of our great Community and you are making sure that our nextgen comes a cropper as far as Good thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds are concerned. I am sure that one of the main tenets of the BPP would be to encourage, promote and support our Zarathosti brethren, needless to say that this is a farfetched dream.

5) The photographs that were published in one of the

Lion Neville Ardeshir Mehta was conferred Honorary Doctorate in Social Services, honor given by Dr. Umesh Gautam, Honourable Chancellor of Invertis University at Hotel Trident on May 23, 2015.

The Real LionTraised ten questions to the two trustees

asking for an explanation on the lending and borrowing of money and jewelry . None of the two have disclosed the amount or given details of the transactions. Actually it is their personal matter and the Community is not concerned about what they do with their own money. They have brought themselves to shame by washing their dirty linen before the Community. Both the Trustees are seasoned players and they do not need to be advised by others. They are fully acquainted with the court proceedings and have never hesitated

their wrath. When there are serious allegations of fraud cheating and defamation against them,

other to clear their names and save their prestige. Three and a half crores of Trust money has gone to the drains, and they are not bothered, but now they are hesitant to go to the court realizing the value of money. The Community is greatly concerned about the colossal loss of Trust Funds squandered by the Trustees for needless and unethical issues. This money could have been utilized for establishing day care centres, to help working mothers, a home for special children, or an industrial institute to provide livelihood to the uneducated members of the Community. It would have brought great returns to the Community. The board of Trustees have lacked vision, wisdom, intent or ability to run the prestigious Institution. Obsessed with the notions of orthodoxy, rejecting reforms for the progress and prosperity of the Community, they gave importance to the dead bodies and their disposal. Can we not allow the dead to rest in heavenly peace and care to give a safe future to our children? No wonder we are declining in numbers and values. In the Guinness Book of world records it should be mentioned that a Community spent three and half crores on

litigations to punish theirs religious Priests for performing prayers!

Our ancestors and our past Trustees were concerned about the welfare of the Community. They used their money to establish vast residential Colonies, Fire Temples, Educational Institutions, Hospitals, Orphanages, Dharamshalas, old age homes, and prayer halls for the welfare of the

poor and the needy. Because of their generosity we live in peace and harmony.

Due to environmental changes the Dokhmenashini system failed, and when there is no possibility of its revival, we have to arrange for a viable alternative. The Trustees should

taken their opinion. There are people wiser and more knowledgeable than the Trustees who may have suggestions to solve our problems without resorting to the ugly tussles which, besides colossal loss of money have brought shame and disgrace to the Community. If the Community has to survive, we have to adjust and accept changes. Even when the bodies of the dead were lying in a pathetic state rotting in the Dokhmas, the Trustees tried to hide facts from the members of the Community. The lady who brought proofs was abused and ridiculed. We have reached a stage when the Community has lost faith in the Trustees, and even the trustees do not Trust each other. All activities of the panchayat including the allotment of houses have been stalled. BPP today is surviving on a ventilator. Unless we

and wisdom to infuse oxygen to the ailing institution there is no chance of our survival. It is the duty and responsibility of every member of the Community to abide by the eternal law of change, and vote for reforms, to bring progress and prosperity to the Community.

You will notice the fruit and herb garden, the pretty little Nursery School with its walls painted Disney style and the tall new building that blends in with the original petit structure by its side.

Each and every classroom on the Campus is installed with an Educomp Smart Class System. This system equips each class with a projector facility and smart learning and teaching capabilities.

One wonderful thing about Mumbai, the big bad city is the amount of opportunity that she breeds. Patuck isn’t just another Educational Institute in her concrete jungle but an opportunity to grow and learn.

A Course that can change the Course of your LifeThe Patuck Technical High School and Junior College is an institute of empowerment. Education sometimes leaves a lot to be taught by the real world. At the Technical section of Patuck however, you can do a course and train with practical knowledge in fields like Accounting and Auditing, Auto Engineer Technician Training, Building Maintenance, Electronics, Mechanical technology, Medical Laboratory Training and more. A course like this can change the course of your life and is offered free of cost (Tuition fees are waived) for Parsis.

At Patuck there is a 0% tuition fee for Parsis. This basically means that any Parsi who is interested in education right from Nursery to Vocational Courses can come in and avail the facility and brighten his or her future.

Dear Mamaiji, You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of the Parsi Times. Today is Daepdin Roj. What does that mean?

Dear Dikri,Today is Daepdin Roj. Dae Pa Din is the Yazad who is considered the Hamkara of Din Yazad. Dae Pa Din means giver of the Religion. As a Yazad, associated with Din, He helps you get closer to your religion / faith / spiritual practices, if you so desire. If you don’t understand some things about your faith, ask Dae Pa Din Yazad to explain it to you. He will bring the answers to you through various means such as a book, a page, a song, a picture or any other way. Keep your eyes and ears and mind open to receive His messages and teachings.

Dr. Shernaz AvariSummer’s in and so are the rising

temperatures and sweaty days. A lot of people get self conscious when

their face tans unevenly or breaks into prickly heat and rashes, due to exposure to the sunlight without adequate protection. TO WARD OFF SUNTAN

Mix 2 teaspoon curd with one teaspoon almond powder, one teaspoon green gram powder and a pinch of turmeric. Mix all the ingredients to form a paste. Leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash off with tap water followed by splashes of ice cold water.

Mix 2 teaspoons of almond powder, 2 teaspoons of pink lentils (masoor dal grounded) in one fourth cup buttermilk. Let the mixture settle for a couple of minutes. Then apply this thick paste on the face. Scrub off with some more buttermilk. Rinse with tap water followed by splashes of ice cold water.

Mix together equal quantities of watermelon juice, orange juice, and carrot juice with one teaspoon of honey and a dash of lime. Keep it on for as long as you like. Wash off with tap water followed by splashes of ice cold water. TO WARD OFF PRICKLY HEAT AND RASHES

An excellent summer facial coolant would be to mix equal quantities of oatmeal, grated watermelon and grated cucumber. Apply a thick layer across your face. Keep it on for 20 minutes. Wash off with tap water followed by splashes of ice cold water.

Take 10 tulsi leaves, 20 mint leaves and 10 neem leaves. Grind to form a smooth paste. Add a pinch of turmeric and 2 drops of lime juice. Keep it on for 30 to 40 minutes. Wash off with tap water followed by splashes of ice cold water.
