Trinity Long Green 12400 Manor Rd. Glen Arm, MD 21057 410-592-6224 COMMUNITY DAY AT TRINITY May 6 This year, in place of the Country Fair, Trinity will host a Community Day on May 6 from 10-2. After prayer and a lot of thoughtful consideration, the Vestry decided to shift the focus of our spring activity (the Country Fair of the past many years) from fund-raising to community building. We have kept the favorites – pulled pork, bake goods, hanging baskets and the bounce house. Recognizing our physical limitations, we have shortened the hours and dropped the high energy- low yield portions of the day such as the book sale, flea market, and vendors. Instead we have invited several community service organizations to attend, such as the Long Green Volunteer Fire Department, the Baltimore Country Animal Rescue, and the Boy Scouts to set up free booths/tables for their organizations. The Day School will hold an Open House and the church building will be open for visitors. Latte has volunteered to do an agility demo and there will be games for the kids as well as hot dogs and hamburgers. Our goal is to have a good time while inviting our neighbors and friends by for a visit. To make that happen, we need as many Trinity folk to attend as possible, and invite your friends to drop by. The Day School Dads club will be cooking the pulled pork and setting up the big tent on Friday, but we will need food service help and baked good items to round things out on Saturday. Most of all, we need your smiling face! Hope to see everyone there Saturday, May 6. May 2017 The Newsletter of Trinity Long Green www.trinitychurchlonggreen.org

COMMUNITY DAY AT TRINITY May 6

This year, in place of the Country Fair, Trinity will host a Community Day on May 6 from 10-2. After prayer and a lot of thoughtful consideration, the Vestry decided to shift the focus of our spring activity (the Country Fair of the past many years) from fund-raising to community building. Recognizing our physical limitations, we have shortened the hours and dropped the high energy-low yield portions of the day such as the book sale, flea market, and vendors.

Dear Friends,

Last weekend, as the Trumpeter deadline came and went, I had no clue as to what to write for the Franfare. As late as Tuesday morning I said I was “waiting for inspiration.” Then the Spirit spoke.

Each year, Paul’s Place invites its volunteers to a Thank-you Event. This year that event was a luncheon held at the Mobtown Ballroom on Washington Blvd in Pigstown, in fact, a building that was formerly St. Paul the Apostle Church, the original home of Paul’s Place. Because of the large number of volunteer hours that Trinity has donated, they invited me as well.

After looking for a parking place for about 15 minutes, I saw a car pull out next door to the site of the luncheon. I entered the building to discover the room dark. Thinking at first this was because a slide show was in progress, I moved cautiously to the first empty seat I could find as my eyes adjusted. I noticed unique “candles” on each table—cell phones with the flashlight app on and a water bottle placed atop the light!. It turns out the power was out.

The first speaker (finishing up as I entered) was emphasizing the “power of one” as a way of emphasizing that Paul’s Place makes a difference in the community because of every single volunteer hour those present had given. Over lunch I learned how my table mates had contributed to the work of Paul’s Place. One was a student at St. Paul’s School for Girls who loved serving in the Marketplace. Another was a nurse who volunteered her time at the weekly nursing clinic. The other was the chaplin at St. Paul’s School for Girls who facilitated the interaction between the School and Paul’s Place.

Because the planned slide show was impossible due to the power outage, the Rev. Jayna Powell (who has visited Trinity in the past) went around the room asking us to introduce ourselves, state the hours we had given and where it was given. Each person’s name tag had the person’s (or group’s) volunteer hours noted. The Episcopal Church was well represented with someone from St. David’s, Redeemer, and Trinity present (I think there were one or two others as well, but I can’t remember what churches they represented). I am proud to say that Trinity had given 500 volunteer hours over the past year! When I went forward to receive Trinity’s certificate, Jayna mentioned Bob and Carol Knight by name, although neither was able to attend.

Trinity should be proud of its long-standing participation in the ministry of Paul’s Place. I believe we were first involved shortly after Paul’s Place was started and have been active ever since. We supply servers for lunch two Wednesdays a month, provide casseroles every other month, have staff at the Marketplace twice a month, provide new boxers (Boxer Days in January), socks (Sock it to Paul’s Place in February), quilts pieced by TAT (about a dozen a year), collections of food at Thanksgiving, gifts at Christmas, and in the past also hosted Summer Camp one week and provided simple First Aid Kits (as an outreach of Sunday School).

In our baptismal covenant we promise to respect the dignity of every human being. Paul’s Place is one way we put that promise into action. For more information about Paul’s Place, ask volunteers Bob Knight, Carol Knight, Susan Embich, Diane Pierce, Bruce Nelson, Roger Eve, Sue Berry, Chrissy Cook, or Linda Smith. You can always check out Paul’s Place on the web www.paulsplaceoutreach.org .

Yours in Christ,

Fran+

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Because this school year is coming to a close, our last packing of food backpacks for Warren Elementary School children will be on Sunday, May 21st. We will meet briefly after that, and welcome everyone’s thoughts and suggestions about Trinity’s involvement in the Food for Thought program. We will resume in October, after receiving information about the needs of the children for the 2017-2018 school year.

Thank you for your continued support! This program has been a huge success!
