Sustainable Communities Act – what’s happening in your area?

This map of the South West shows (in green) the

councils that have so far used the Sustainable

Communities Act (orange shows planned activity).

Local Works are keen to meet people and groups

that have used or been involved in the Act since it

became law in 2007. If that’s you, email Ai at:

Training for community energy groups

CSE is rolling out a series of talks, workshops and training events for members of community

energy groups in Avon and Somerset. The first few of these have been fully booked, but there are

still spaces for future events. Look on the CSE website (‘information for communities’ pages) for

more information about the programme, and also about the workshops planned for September

on legal structures, as well as a joint Bristol Energy Network event focusing on the Green Deal.

Are you considering solar photovoltaic (PV) energy?

CSE has just published a useful set of guidelines to help groups planning solar PV installations.

They cover key questions to ask installers, and provide guidance and explanations on issues

associated with installing a PV system, including: Finding a good installer; Design of the system;

Structure and installation; Grid connection; Monitoring and display equipment; What could go

wrong; and Sources of further information. To open the document as a downloadable pdf, click

Farming sunlight

Talking of solar developments, these solar PV farms in Lincolnshire and Cornwall will be the UK's

biggest installations: www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/jul/07/uk-solar-farms?CMP=twt_fd

Help from the Energy Saving Trust

The Energy Saving Trust adviceservice offers free, impartial energy

advice to ensure you stay warm in

winter, save money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon emissions. The friendly local

advice team can put you in touch with grant schemes in your area (for loft, cavity wall and solid

wall insulation) as well as providing up-to-date advice on the small scale renewable sector, such

as information on the Renewable Heat Premium Payments. To speak to the team about energy

efficiency or to register interest in the Renewable Heat Premium Payments, call: 0800 512 012.

Thousand flowers blooming

The Community Innovation for Sustainable Energy (CISE) research team at the University of

Sussex is conducting a survey on sustainable community energy in the UK. If you’re involved in

community activities or projects for energy saving, and have time to share your experiences

about NETWORKING and ENERGY/CARBON PERFORMANCE, they would be very pleased to hear

from you via this 15-20 minute survey: www.surveymonkey.com/s/sustainableCommunityEnergy Low Carbon Buildings: New buildings

The Carbon Trust have released a new film about the Low

Carbon Buildings Programme; Making low carbon buildings a

reality. Twenty-three projects were awarded funding fromthe Department of Energy and Climate Change to install

renewable energy systems and each site made a

commitment to reduce the overall carbon emissions of the

building below the regulatory minimum. The film runs

through case studies of new low-carbon buildings, and the

help they can offer developers. Find out more at: www.carbontrust.co.uk/buildings

Bristol Energy Co-op

This community-based group based in Bristol are developing a city-wide community energy

project. The first phase will be based on solar PV installations on community buildings, with ashare issue to raise capital to take advantage of the feed-in tariff for income. After that, the co-

operative plans to expand into areas such as domestic PV, energy efficiency measures and

renewable heat projects. For more info: www.bristolenergy.coop
