Field Visits Specification
Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine Department of Community, Environmental and Occupational Medicine Department offering the field visit: Public Health Department Academic year: 4th year undergraduate students 2013 - 2014 Field specification approval: Department council dated: 15/9/2013
General Aims Field visits will expose students to reality. They encounter different services provided through primary health care centers, correlate theoretical knowledge with real situations in the community, evaluate infection control procedures, identify occupational hazards among exposed workers, observe various fever hospital wards and gain skills of team work.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs ( Through direct observation during the field visit, students should be able to : A. Recall of Knowledge and understanding:
a i Describe the basic services provided in the visited places as services delivered in Primary Health Care centers, procedures and equipments for infection control, etc. a ii Identify important items in the official death certificate and recognize the correct formulation of causes of death in the death certificate. a iii Recognize the basic methods of hospital waste management .

Intellectual skills : Analyze, evaluate, and conclude scientific basic knowledge through the visits b i Evaluate activities performed in primary health care centers as vaccination, growth monitoring, family planning counseling through use of checklists. b ii Relate specific occupational diseases with certain occupations.

Professional and practical skills Adopt basic skills about : c i How obligatory vaccines of childhood (EPI ) are handled, stored and given. c ii Plotting anthropometric measurements of a child seen in the well baby clinic on growth charts and interpreting the growth curve. c iii Use anthropometric instruments including the balance, skin fold caliper and others to assess the nutritional status of students; determine the body mass index, measure skin fold thickness, waist/hip ratio… c iv Apply the geriatric health assessment tool in evaluating health status of an elderly attending geriatric clinic at Ain Shams University hospital. c v Collect data for field research: retrieve data from medical records, health office, family folders etc..
