Community Informer Issue 33 Autumn 2014
In September, 220 Cubs descended on Bradley Wood Scout
Camp. The weather was good to us again staying fresh with
a little rain but it takes more than a little rain to dampen the
spirits of the Sherburn Cub Packs.
Saturday saw the Cubs taking part in Archery, Shooting,
Crate Stacking, Water Rockets, Grass Karts,
Fire Lighting, Arts & Craft, Rope Slides & the
big favourite with most of the Cubs... pan-
cakes with a choice of fillings.
In addition, the team of girls took up the
challenge of Coracle building in the swim-
ming pool and held the record for the whole
weekend of the longest time spent afloat. While 4 of our
Cubs 2 from Vikings and 2 from Brythons took up the chal-
lenge of the high ropes and they were extremely high! The
Cubs also enjoyed climbing and abseiling down the impres-
sive indoor climbing wall.
After a busy day the Camp Bonfire was the main event. This
was led by the Camp Leader &
joined by the District’s very own
Bungle. The children together
with leaders sang & danced their
hearts out around a
roaring fire, then it was off or some hot chocolate &
hotdogs.
The Cubs got back to camp, there had been an Alien
Invasion or at least that what the children will say.
Green Alien balloons had mysteriously appeared on
every tent & illuminated the
camp for the rest of the night.
Sunday was all about playing outdoor
games ensuring that they were asleep
before they got to the M62
With May came Sherburn
Gala, yet another award win-
ning float was entered by the
Beavers, all the leaders enter-
ing into the spirit of the day!
What a summer!!
Aldwark 14 – Back in June it was a full house at CYCS
water activity centre at Aldwark on the river Ouse. Both
Cub Packs and the Scout Troop had a great time
“messing about on the river” building their confidence
and having fun.
In July, Central Yorkshire County Scouts
went to Bramham Park for Challenge 14.
Blessed with good weather over 3500
young people had a great time. As usual
Sherburn took a large contingent to swell
the numbers of Wetherby District

New Head looks forward to Ofsted inspection
Sherburn High School’s newly appointed Head Teacher is off to a flying start celebrating outstanding GCSE
results, the highest in the area (above all Selby and Tadcaster high schools) and the best the school has ever
recorded. Maria Williams is delighted that 66% of students achieved five or more A* to C including English
and Maths proving that the school continues to go from strength to strength.
The school’s relentless focus on challenge and high expectations has resulted in 15% of students achieving
A/A*, more than double the national average. Furthermore, the percentage of students making more than
expected progress is well above the national average in maths whilst closing the gap for disadvantaged pu-
pils. 73% of students attained a grade A*-C in both maths and English, despite turbulence in English results
nationally. A2 results were also pleasing and all students were able to progress to their chosen destination in
higher education or employment.
Maria Williams, previously Deputy Head at the school, has been part of the Sherburn team responsible for the
transformation of the school. She is keen to develop school facilities and is working closely with the local
community to improve sports facilities. Mrs Williams commented, “This September, the school welcomed its
largest cohort of year 7 students in over 5 years, demonstrating the growing confidence of the local communi-
ty. Parents are making Sherburn High School their first choice and this tells us we are getting things right and
parents in the local area are responding.”
The school works closely with primary feeder schools,
(Athelstan, Hungate, Barkston Ash, Monk Fryston, Kirk Fenton,
Brotherton and Byram, Kellington, Saxton, Burton Salmon,
Fairburn, South Milford) as part of the STAR Alliance, sharing
teaching and learning training opportunities. “We are looking
forward to Ofsted this year as we are confident that it will be a
positive experience and they will confirm the excellent practice
that is going on in the school. Sherburn is a good school and
this is reflected in our results this year and in the day to day
teaching of our fantastic staff.
We had an extremely successful open evening on 18th Sep-
tember with a large turnout of families eager to look around
and question staff. There were follow up by open mornings on
7th October and 16
th October .
Monday 15th September saw the start of the new season for Sherburn Camera Club. There was an excited buzz
from the regular members following our usual Summer break. Discussions followed with the introduction of our
new 2014/2015 programme and congratulations were awarded to several members following their success in the
photographic competitions at the Cawood Craft Fair. Photographs were on display and an introduction to the
making of Audio Visual presentations was also shown.
The club was first formed in 1971 with nine members, over the years numbers have increased to approximately
thirty four in all, and includes several members who have been there from the very beginning.
Chairman Mr. David Buckle had the pleasure of welcoming several prospective new members and in particular
one or two ladies. The club has an excellent ratio of male and female members therefore the prospect of two or
three new lady members was good to see, thus adding to the balance.
New members are always welcome, whether you are a complete beginner or more experienced you can be as-
sured of a warm welcome. We meet every Monday 8pm -10pm at the Church Hall, Sherburn in Elmet.
An exciting programme has been introduced for the coming year to include a variety of speakers, workshops, and
outdoor shoots, together with photography competitions between club members (optional) and other Camera
Clubs.

On Wednesday 17th September a team of Year 6
boys from Sherburn Hungate Primary School-
Cona, Daniel, Jake, Cameron, Ashley, Nick and
Lewis travelled to Sherburn High School for an
AMAZING! Football tournament. Kindly Mrs Peill
and Mrs Mawson-Mole accompanied them. The
team were greeted by another 7 keen teams; Ath-
elston, Barkston Ash, Saxton, Brotherton, South
Milford, Kirk Fenton and
Monk Fryston.
As the first whistle blew
every team got straight in
and scurried down the
pitch with the ball and
scored a goal, if they
were lucky ……
The crowd held their
breath as Cona’s right
foot flew and hit the ball.
It soared up high in the
air, like a discus, and finally hit the back of the net!
The top right hand corner shook and the goalie
held his head in shame. There was no chance of
any goalkeeper saving that astounding goal. The
crowd jumped up in the air as if they had won the
World Cup!
Throughout the day the Hungate team played a
blinder! Ashley and Nick scored 1 each and Cona
and Daniel scored an amazing 3 goals. The team
were over the moon. Safe to say the whole team
tried their best and did not give up! Additionally
when the referee didn’t give a foul they got back up
and didn’t argue back with the final response.
In total the terrific team won 2,
drew 2 but unfortunately lost 3.
Which is a super result for any
team’s first outing on the pitch.
Unfortunately Hungate didn’t come
first but they still really enjoyed it.
All teams deserve a big congratu-
lations for their overall perfor-
mance their skill, determination
and desire to win.
South Milford came 1st and were
the overall winners so they will now
go on to the Selby semi-final and if they win that,
they go on to the York final. The Hungate players
wish them the best of luck in their next tournament.
To anybody who likes football all the teams will
highly recommend matches like these and alt-
hough it was a children’s tournament, it was played
like adults!

Athelstan Community Primary School has being celebrating yet more suc-
cess with its arts programme. It is already established within the school
that the Year Six children (11 year olds) undertake the Arts Award Bronze,
which gives the children the equivalent to a GCSE grade D.
Now the school also has its Year Four children (9 year olds) gaining the
Arts Award Explore which is an accredited Entry Level 3 qualification, giv-
ing the children four credits towards a GCSE. Over the year the children
have worked with their teacher Mrs Kirsty Whelerton collecting their arts
experiences in an Explore arts log recording what they find across the cur-
riculum and in through the extra curriculum activities offered at the school. Arts Award Explore is open
to anyone up to the age of 25, so Athelstan is very proud of its successful nine year olds.
Congratulations to Ellie Bissett-Walton, Alex Worlock, Samuel Brown, Amelie Chambers, Lauren
Cummings, Lucy Dracup, Daniel Eldon, Jake Fawcett, Danielle Gill, Louise Harding, Phoebe Harmer,
Megan Horn, Jorja Houston, Owen Jeffers, Fraser Kirkman-Bielby, Isabella Mitton, Katy Oldfield,
Jacob Orr, Lewis Selby, Thomas Shakespeare, Sian Smith, Oliver Stephenson, Millie Toes, and
Findlay Brennan.
Miss Karen O’Donnell Head teacher said “It is fantastic that the children at Athelstan are able to
achieve so much so early, it really shows how the school’s strong and sustained commitment to the
arts has impact on our children’s achievements.

Kingspan Sun Salutations
A bit of sun isn’t only good for the garden and the soul; it’s also an excellent way to generate low carbon electricity. To har-
ness that power, Kingspan Insulation has now covered the roof of its Sherburn-in-Elmet site with Photovoltaic (PV) panels,
forming a giant array which was officially unveiled on 7th October by Department of Energy and Climate Change minister,
Amber Rudd MP.
At over 15,000 m2 in size, the array covers an area greater than 22 tennis courts and is capable of providing enough energy
to power 500 average sized homes. The electricity it generates will be used to help power the LED smart lighting across the
site, along with the manufacturing lines.
Amber Rudd commented: “It’s fabulous to see a business investing in a zero net energy
scheme… with these measures Kingspan is setting a great example for the rest of the
industry.”
This is just the latest step in Kingspan Insulation’s on-going mission to achieve “zero net
energy use” at all its sites. As mentioned back in the spring, “zero net energy use” means
cutting down on existing energy use and replacing what’s left with onsite low or zero car-
bon generation technologies. Energy can still be imported from the national grid but this must be matched with the energy
exported during periods of low demand.
In addition to the PV array, a new heat recovery system is also due to go online in November, helping to cut down gas us-
age and Kingspan Insulation is also putting the finishing touches on a planning application for a 17MW Biomass Power
Plant. The giant new PV array on the roof of Kingspan Insulation’s Sherburn-in-Elmet site has been officially unveiled by
Amber Rudd MP.

The club is coming to the end of a successful year
of activities to raise funds and support local com-
munities, the last event will of course be the annu-
al Bonfire. The Rotary Club working with other
community groups come together to put on a
great event this year on the 8th November in
South Milford. This event takes a year to plan and
a great deal of hard work by many people in the
community. I am sure everyone is looking forward
to attending and look out for where you can get
your tickets, check out the face book page for in-
formation.
Car Boot sales
The car Boot sales have now finished and again
very successful, thank you to all sellers and buy-
ers who came, most days the weather was very
good, August was a worry but the day was a suc-
cess. This year the Milford Plant car Boots have
been managed together with volunteers of South
Milford School and all profits shared. The dates
for next years events will be published in the New
Year on the web site and face book page,
www.osgoldcrossrotary.org
Thanks to Phillip and the staff of Milford Plants for
their support and to Geoff and Phillip for the use
of the site.
Visit to Nostell Priory
Club members and friends were very lucky to
have a visit to the gardens of Nostell Priory on the
evening of the 10th September.
The head gardener Paul Dibb gave a guided tour
of the woodlands, speaking about the history of
the gardens and 3 lakes that are included. He al-
so gave a tour of the very interesting “menagerie”
garden, which many years ago built to house a
range of animals in cave like structures in the sur-
rounding quarry walls, some of which we see as
common place today but then quite an attraction.
The best bit was left to last, unfortunately the light
had just about faded and so the visit to the Kitch-
en garden was interesting but we did not get the
full beauty of the great work undertaken by Paul
and his colleagues. This does mean that a sec-
ond visit will be needed.
A most enjoyable and interesting evening led by
Paul who has worked at the Priory man and boy
and is still passionate about his work.
New Club Members
The club has been joined by three new honorary
members, Mr Gareth Mason, Head of De Lacy
Academy Knottingley and Maria Williams, the
new head at Sherburn High School plus Mar-
rieanne Pal, who with her husband owns The Cre-
ative Shed in Sherburn and has provided advice
and support to bring the club into the digital world
and social media.
Dictionaries for Life
Club Members presented dictionaries to a number
of primary school leavers in our area, In the digital
age we are told these are still very much appreci-
ated and treasured, one teacher told us she still
had hers and in the front page were the names of
all of her class mates, a well preserved memory
of school days as well as useful moving into sec-
ondary school.
Ocean Youth Trust & Rotary Youth Leadership
Two awardees from Knottingley , De Lacy Acade-
my, representing the Rotary club completed very
successful weeks earlier this year. Alicia learnt
how important team work is and the crucial role of
the leader in her time on the Rotary Youth Lead-
ership Award Scheme, whilst Jake developed his
social and inter-active skills on board ship on the
Ocean Youth Training week. Both were apprecia-
tive of the opportunity given to them by the club
and did interesting talks about their experiences.
If you know of a young person who would benefit
from being involved please contact us, nomina-
tions for next year will soon be advertised.
Dragon Boat Race
Club members are now working hard to ensure
that the 2015 Dragon Boat raise held on May 25th
a great success. We are looking to those who
want to raise funds for a cause they support and
willing to get wet and have a great day out by
“buying” a boat and to companies who would like
to sponsor the event. This is a great fun day out,
free to attend and safety is priority for those taking
part, the races are all supervised by Race the
Dragon www.racethedragon.co.uk
If you are interested in what Rotary does and
want to get involved visit

meet and arrange a visit to a club event.

The Chair of the Gala Association Repor t After a very successful Gala this year we are all working hard towards the Gala next year.
We were rather disappointed at the AGM as only the Committee Members were present.
The Gala have recently funded a heavy duty strimmer for the few volunteers who keep the Church
yard and areas tidy, we trust it will make the work easier.
The Christmas Lights are well on the way thanks to Mr Edwin Levick. He has repaired all the Village
Lights and 13 of the street lights have been sent to Leeds Lights to be refurbished and repaired also,
thanks to the generosity of the Parish Council, we will be commissioning 6 more street lights up
Kirkgate for Christmas. As usual we are hoping for Volunteers to help put up the lights on Saturday
29th November meet at 9am outside the Swan. It would be difficult to imagine what would happen
to the Lights without the Gala Committee.
Other dates for your diaries – 31st October the Halloween Disco will be held at the Elmete Social
Club doors open at 6pm with fancy dress and, as usual, prizes for the best costume at the various
age groups [including adults]. All welcome
14th December the Christmas Disco - doors open 4pm until 7.30pm all welcome at Elmete Social
Club. Father Christmas will arrive to give presents to the 0 – 12year age groups.
Please support both these events as the Gala Committee feels these events help promote and fos-
ter the Community feeling within Village.
Alma Hodgson, Gala Association Chair.
Summary of Gala Accounts for 2013 –2014
As the weather was so good for the Gala this year there was a record turn out and the local charities
and organisations had a good opportunity to acquire funds. This in turn let the Committee recoup
most of the losses made over the year. Some losses are expected such as the Christmas Lights and
the General expenditure for Public and Employer’s Liability Insurance. C.J.Lake. Treasurer.
Western Community Engagement Forum launches new Grass Roots Init iative The Western CEF is a partnership between Parish, District and County Councillors, the police, fire and volun-tary / community sector organisations. Their aim is to make a lasting difference to the quality of people’s lives who live and work in the area. As part of this they are supporting small local community groups, sports clubs, churches and charities, in part-
nership with Selby District AVS. This will include ongoing support, training and the opportunity of some seed funding. The launch event held on the 30th September was attended by 16 organisa-tions from a wide range of locations including Sherburn. If you are interested in accessing the support available please contact Carol Warren at [email protected] or by ringing 01757 291111

Letter to the Editor I feel the need to reply to Mrs Taylor reference to the
Aldi store that is going to be built in Sherburn.
I would think I am a lot older than her and remember
when Sherburn was a village, it is now a small town,
and very few people had cars so shops were needed
then. Times change and so have shopping habits.
Shops in an area as big as Sherburn and it's sur-
rounding district need to have more scope and I feel
the present shops don't do this.
With all the new houses that have been built and are
to be built a Supermarket is what is needed especially
if they are selling groceries at lower prices than the
Co op and Tescos.
Regards
Harry Issatt
The long awaited completion of access to Plat-
forms at South Milford has taken place. On the
road leading to Platform 1 (to Selby and Hull)
lighting has been installed and three disabled
car parking spaces have been placed near the
main road to make it a little easier for the mobili-
ty impaired to access Platform 2 (for trains to
Leeds and the west). Additional lighting has al-
so been provided on the steep access footpath
to Platform 2. Northern Rail has now agreed to
provide a help phone on Platform 1 with installa-
tion expected soon.
Real time Customer Information Screens and a
modern Waiting Shelter on Platform 2 will fur-
ther enhance the Station environment and this
work should commence in the autumn. Negotia-
tions with Northern Rail, Selby District Council
and South Milford and Sherburn Parish Coun-
cils are on-going in the hope that comprehen-
sive CCTV coverage will take place.
At Sherburn-in-Elmet Station a meeting has
been held to consider the possibility of providing
adequate car parking facilities and the findings
are being examined by Northern and Network
Rail. Last year the Station had the fastest grow-
ing percentage increase of Station users in the
Selby District and it is hoped that now it is pos-
sible for residents to have quality time at York
on Sundays and that footfall will increase fur-
ther. SADRUG is concerned that the time gaps
in return commuter services from York are mak-
ing it more difficult for workers and representa-
tions have been made to try to resolve the posi-
tion by the time the Winter timetable commenc-
es in December.
A detailed response has been made to the DfT's
Northern and TransPennine Franchise Consul-
tation Document. Sherburn and South Milford
featured heavily in the response. Three different
Companies will receive an Invitation to Tender
in December this year with the successful bid-
der being chosen in the autumn of next year.
The successful Company will start providing
services in February 2016.
The £12 million refurbishment of the Selby river
bridge has been completed with very little im-
pact on train services between Selby and York
and Selby, Leeds and Manchester. Those trav-
elling between Hull and Selby have had extend-
ed journey times resulting from having to use
bus replacement services and will be pleased to
return to normal services.

‘Souled Out’ helps Radio York pass their fund raising target
Elmet Lions would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported their “Souled Out” evening
on September 13th. Even for people who were not followers of Northern Soul, the Solicitors band put
on a fantastically energetic performance which had everyone up and dancing. The event raised a fan-
tastic £3,500 for Radio York’s Goodnight Sleep appeal for St Martin’s Children’s Hos-
pice and took them past their target of £200,00. Special thanks to all the businesses
and people who donated prizes for the raffle and the Charity Auction conducted by
Adam Tomlinson from Radio York. Big thanks to everyone who attended and made it
“the best night out ever in Sherburn”

The council has once again been trying to improve its recycling, which is actually one of the best
in North Yorkshire, but that’s not stopping them! Flats have always been an issue as it’s difficult
to expect the occupiers to have a set of recycle bins kicking around in the hallway or whatever!
So, new communal recycle bins are being 'wheeled' out across the district and this will make it
much easier for the properties affected---estimated at 1,000. We need as little as possible going
in the grey bin as this goes to landfill at the present moment in time (though plans are being
made to change this).
Next I would like to talk about the joint working with North Yorkshire. Our Chief Executive Mary
Weastell is now a year in post in a joint role looking to join up services better between the two
councils. When you have an issue with the council you should not have to find out which one to
ring first!
The new Leisure Centre in Selby is progressing well and it will contain a 'state of the art' 6 lane
25m competition pool plus a leaner pool, gym, sauna and steam rooms.
Lastly why not keep up to date with the news etc with Selby’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

News update from District Councillor Mike Jordan
Update from County Councillor Bob Packham You will note elsewhere in this edition that a public meeting is to be arranged by the Parish Council and County
Council for 15 January 2015. This will be at the Eversley Park Centre at 7.30p.m. It has come about as a result
of two meetings I have chaired between Senior Council Officers from both County and District and members of
Sherburn and South Milford Parish Councils, the purpose of which were to consider the impact of Central Gov-
ernment cuts on local government services. The main aim of those meetings has been to consider those ser-
vices that are likely to be most threatened by the severe reduction in budgets and to establish what actions the
County, District and Sherburn in Elmet and South Milford Parish Councils can take together to reduce the im-
pacts and, where feasible, produce a better service to address local needs. This has included the likely impacts
on the future of Sherburn library; the Children’s Centre; youth club provision; social services; and public
transport.
The meeting falls in the middle of the County Council’s consultation on the future of Library services throughout
the County, which takes place between 3rd
November and 8th February. The meeting on 15 January will provide
an opportunity for residents to discuss the library consultation document and express their views, but it is also
important in the wider context. Sherburn in Elmet Parish Council is already investigating ways of improving ser-
vice provision in the village, with a view to potentially establishing a village hub to provide a single point of con-
tact for a wide range of services. In moving these proposals forward the meeting will provide an opportunity for
significant further input from residents, to build on the information gained from the Parish Survey, reported in the
last edition of the Informer. This identified the Library as the most valued facility and highlighted the importance
of public transport, the community bus, the visiting scheme, citizens advice and play areas amongst other ser-
vices and facilities.
Please come to the meeting on 15th January and share your views. Cuts are a reality throughout public services
but if we work together as a community (together with the residents of surrounding villages that look to Sherburn
for services) we can not only reduce impacts but I consider we can provide a more co-ordinated approach to the
management of services and facilities, based on our requirements and our ideas.

Sherburn Eversley Cricket Club
The 2014 season has ended, but not in as good a way as we would have wished. The 1st X1
finished in 5th position in Div 3 and our 2nd X1 finished in the lower half of Div 5. Due to poor
weather we had 12 matches (6 for each team) affected by rain, some people think it has
been a good summer, but not for cricket. We also cancelled 6 matches due to a shortage of
players. Our club is now in the position of probably not being able to raise 2 teams for the
2015 season and are desperate to recruit new players to make sure this does not happen. It
may appear to be a long time until next April but any newcomers to the village or ex players
who would like to play the odd game now and then, please contact a member of our club or
myself. You will be welcomed with open arms.!!!!
The Annual General Meeting for 2014 will be held in early November.
Finally our sincere thanks to our club sponsor Emsleys Estate Agents and to all our match
ball sponsors for the season.

Some of you will be aware that the planning permission for the proposed new Aldi
supermarket on the site of the old Sissons Yard on Low Street has been given the
go-ahead so building work will commence shortly. Aldi have said that they would
like it open by Spring next year.
The new supermarket will create up to 40 new jobs and provide increased choice
for shoppers. The Parish Council did object to the design as it originally included
extensive areas of white rendering, but Aldi agreed to change most of this to brick so that it
would be more in keeping with the surroundings. We did also ask for more screening from the
road and a contribution towards helping to upgrade the centre of the village, but both of these
were turned down.
We also had extensive discussions with Aldi’s transport consultants and these confirmed our
belief that the base figures (which are supplied by North Yorkshire County Council) overestimate
the capacity of the traffic lights in the village centre. Despite using what we believe are over-
optimistic figures, they still show the lights going over capacity in the near future. Our concern is
that we will be faced with gridlock in the village centre and that will have serious implications for
all parts of the village (e.g. more rat-running through estates). We are trying to set up a meeting
with North Yorkshire Highways to demonstrate that their figures are incorrect so more will follow
on this issue. My thanks are extended to the work of Councillor Paul Doherty for his efforts on
both planning and transport issues.
Following on from meetings with various service providers from both Selby and North Yorkshire,
there is to be a public meeting on Thursday 15th January at 7.30pm at the Eversley Park Centre
entitled "The future delivery of services in Sherburn and surrounding areas" where budget cuts
and future plans will be discussed in an open forum. All members of the public are welcome to
come along and join in the discussions with the service providers and members of your Parish
Council. I strongly urge as many people as possible to come along to this meeting.
Your Parish Council have teamed up with Community Association in backing their plans for an
autumn campaign to help tidy up the centre of the village. We are writing to various shop keep-
ers asking them to keep their shop fronts clear of weeds and for excess packaging to be dis-
posed of rather than building up into unsightly piles. We have also asked that delivery doors be
screened off if at all possible. The Community Association work tirelessly planting and maintain-
ing plant pots around the village as well as conducting the Community Litter Pick every quarter,
so we all owe them a huge thank you for their efforts.
The application form for the next round of funding to undertake a more in-depth feasibility study
on the Old School has just been completed in conjunction with Friends of The Old School. If
successful with the bid the money will enable us to demonstrate to North Yorkshire our contin-
ued commitment to keeping this building if possible. We would like to thank North Yorkshire for
allowing us the time to look into this matter further.
As I always mention, members of your Parish Council are volunteers and undertake their duties
in their own time for no monetary reward. Any suggestions to help make our village a more
pleasant place to live are always welcome. New volunteers are also most welcome, not just by
your Parish Council but by all the other groups that give up their time to help around the village
so if you can spare any amount of time (and it doesn't have to be on a regular basis) then
please get in touch with us.
