Welcome to Community Music Center.

Since I began working at Community Music Center in October 2011, I have enjoyed hun-dreds of conversations with people who have shared insight into their experiences at CMC’s Mission and Richmond District Branches. It speaks to the underlying strength of CMC that, after so many discussions, sentiments converge on a single point: people who are drawn to Community Music Center and its mis-sion derive deep meaning and inspiration from what happens here.

I invite you to look through this year’s program catalog to learn how you can grow and be challenged musically in a community referred to by many as their chosen family. Our history of unwavering commitment to the 91-year mission of provid-ing high quality music education to anyone continues to unfold today in ways that offer challenges and life-changing experiences to our students. Community Music Center provides instruction in 30 different instruments as well as opportunities to join a variety of ensembles. Our faculty comes together to support a program that is rich and diverse in musical styles and traditions. The structure of our offerings allows students of all levels and backgrounds to cultivate interests and find their path. At CMC, we believe that it is never too late to study music. In fact, the ages of CMC students span over 90 years! CMC is proud to have played an important role this past year in the lives of nearly 2,400 students. We offered over 300 performances at our Capp Street recital hall and numerous CMC concerts at other locations around the Bay Area. All of us at Community Music Center remain committed to our mission and the op-portunity it provides the people of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. Come make music with us!

Private lessons: The foundation of instruc-tion at CMC, private lessons provide guid-ance through the process of learning to play an instrument or sing. Designed to nurture individual talent, lessons help students learn how to practice, develop technical skill, improve musicianship, and gain a knowl-edge of and appreciation for musical works. Recommended ages to begin: There are classes for students of all ages at Community Music Center. Infants and toddlers 0-3 years old and their caregivers can join our Family Music class; children ages 4-8 can enroll in Music for Children; children ages 6.5 to 8 can enroll in Piano for Kids; children from 6-11 can enroll in String Orchestra for Children. Students ages 6 and up may study violin or cello with the in-structor’s consent and students ages 8 through adult may enroll in all other private lessons except for voice, which starts at age 13, and theory and musicianship classes, which are for students age 16 and up. Adults, it’s never too late to begin!

Styles: In addition to Western classical, CMC of-fers private and group classes in many styles, in-cluding jazz, folk, rock, blues, Latin, Eastern Eu-ropean, Middle Eastern, Flamenco, and popular.

Exam Preparation: Some CMC faculty can prepare students for the MTAC (Music Teach-

ers Association of California), ASTA (American String Teachers Association), ABRSM (Associat-ed Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music/Canada) exams if desired. Ask a registrar for more information. Theory & Musicianship classes: These group classes offer a deeper understanding of how music works and help students with rhythm, ear training, reading, composition and perfor-mance skills.

Ensemble classes: Complementing instru-mental and voice lessons, ensemble classes give students the opportunity to make music with others.

Performances: Students can share their prog-ress and talents and develop performance skills through concerts at CMC and other locations around the Bay Area. CMC’s over 300 annual re-citals and concerts also give students a chance to hone their listening skills and hear students, faculty and other musicians perform.

Students are invited to participate in recitals every quarter. Juried evaluations in April/May offer students the opportunity to: get feedback from other faculty members, audition for the all-level All School Recital held in June, and if age 18 or under and receiving financial aid, au-dition for private lesson merit scholarships.

Anything Goes Chorus IBeginning singers, this is a fun and supportive environment for learning basic vocal technique, fundamentals of breathing and supporting your tone, note reading, and simple two and three part harmony. This class is designed for singers with little to no experience. It is focused on group singing, but also allows for attention to individual needs. Ages: Adults, older teens

Anything Goes Chorus IIExperienced singers, harmonize in a variety of musical styles and continue developing your vo-cal technique and sight reading skills. This is a chorus for vocalists who love to sing and enjoy interacting with others. This group will perform in concert at the end of each quarter. Ages: Adults, older teens

Instrument: Voices of all ranges, especially tenor and bass Musical Styles: Jazz, Broadway, a cappella, 50’s & 60’s, pop

Prerequisites: Previous choral experience. Ability to sing in tune, read music and hold your own while singing three and four part harmony. Contact the office to schedule an audition. Class Size: 15-30 students

Beginning Jazz ImprovisationLearn basic concepts, terminology and strategies for jazz improvisation and develop a repertoire along the way. You will be introduced to the blues and diminished scales and the seven modes of a major scale, focusing on the mixolydian and dorian modes. We will work on ear training exer-cises and jazz standards as a group.

Prerequisites: Ability to play all major scales and arpeggios by memory

Beginning Latin Jazz WorkshopLearn how to play in the context of an ensem-ble while developing improvisational skills and learning basic grooves. Repertoire includes stan-dard Latin-jazz tunes and pieces developed in the workshop. We will perform each winter and spring quarter.

Blues Guitar WorkshopDevelop ensemble skills, such as soloing and ac-companying, while you build a repertoire of songs to prepare for performances. This workshop will cover chords, progressions, scales, patterns, and “licks” found in a variety of blues styles.

Chamber Music EnsemblesWhether you are an advanced beginner or an ac-complished amateur musician, CMC’s chamber music program offers an opportunity to develop your musicianship and technique as well as the chance to play with others. Groups are composed of two to five students of compatible levels. Ad-vanced beginners and intermediate students will focus on developing basic ensemble skills, into-nation, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy. Ad-vanced students will study important aspects of ensemble playing, including interpretation and performance techniques.

Ages: Teens, adults

Instruments: All and voice

Musical Styles: All

Prerequisites: Students must have at least two years of experience playing. Beginning students should be familiar with key signature with up to three sharps and flats, and basic rhythms includ-ing eighth notes. Placement auditions for new stu-dents take place at the beginning of each quarter in order to create groups who play at similar lev-els. Collegium MusicumLearn interpretation and performance tech-niques for playing western early music. This class will cover the evolution of harmonic progres-sions, musical forms, and styles of ornamentation throughout different periods and countries. The ensemble performs each December in a “Winter Celebration” concert and each June in a concert themed “Baroque and Beyond.”

Ages: Adults, teens

Musical Styles: Medieval, Renaissance, early and late Baroque

Hungarian Folk SingingSing beautiful Hungarian folk songs from Tran-sylvanian villages. Learn Hungarian pronuncia-tion, chest voice singing, ornamentation, text and translation, and wonderful melodies using re-cordings of local village singers. Come dive into the world of Eastern European folk music and the joy of singing together!

Jazz EnsembleJazz musicians, this is an informal forum to work on improvisation and to develop your ensemble skills. This group emphasizes improvisation, writ-ing and arranging, the role of each instrument, and the development of musical interaction.

Ages: Older teens, adults

Instruments: Trumpet, trombone, saxophones, and rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass and drums)

Musical Styles: Jazz standards, be-bop, blues, Latin jazz

Prerequisites: Proficiency on an instrument, mastery of scales and prior experience in impro-visation. Admission with instructor’s consent.

Jazz Improv Workshop Learn how to execute arrangements and impro-vise in a small jazz ensemble setting. Students will share improvisation concepts and learn how to improve and evaluate solos, group dynamics and sound. Players will be strongly encouraged to write original tunes and there will be various performance opportunities throughout the year.

Flamenco ensemble will be on the development of advanced arrangements and the preparation of a cohesive group for public performances. This ensemble performs under the name Potingue, which means “an unusual mix” in Spanish. There will be winter and spring performances at CMC and other shows around the Bay Area.

Ages: Adults, older teens Instruments: Flute, clarinet, guitar (nylon string), violin, cello, bass, piano, and percussion (cajón, palmas, bongó, congas, güiro, claves, darbuka, botija, etc.)

Musical Styles: Cuban charanga, Flamenco and Latin music Prerequisites: For advanced students. Profi-ciency on an instrument, good reading skills (not required for percussionist), ensemble experience, and strong interest in Latin music. Admission with instructor’s consent.


Location, Day and Time:Mission District Branch; Wednesdays, 8-10pm

Tuition: $354 per quarter (12 weeks) Class does not meet summer quarter.

Latin-Flamenco Rhythm WorkshopImprove your rhythmic skills and develop your musicianship through Flamenco, Afro-American and Latin music. Emphasis is given to the study of “compás,” the Flamenco rhythmic flow, and “clave,” the key rhythmic concept in the Cuban polyrhythmic ensemble. In addition to their in-strument, students will play “palmas” (hand clap-ping) and percussion.

Latin Vocal WorkshopDevelop your vocal performance skills and build a song repertoire from various Spanish-speaking countries. Students will work on soloing and har-monizing in a group. There will be quarterly recit-als and other performance opportunities all year.

Middle Eastern, Turkish & Eastern European MusicLearn to play the exciting music of the Middle East, Turkey and Eastern Europe including Klezmer and Balkan styles. Music scale systems and maqams will be studied in the context of selected tunes. Improvisations (taqsims/preludes/doinas) will be attempted according to traditional practices. There will be various performance opportunities throughout the year.

Prerequisites: For intermediate to advanced players. Students new to this style of music are encouraged to take private lessons with the instructor.

Singing Rounds & CanonsSinging rounds and canons is an easy way to start singing in a group. Think “the whole is fargreater than the sum of its parts.” Learn to sing a simple melody along with the rest of the group. Space out your entrances and the simple tune will turn into a complex harmonic wonder. Learn simple rounds (such as “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”) and complex rounds by great composers.

Children’s ChorusYoung singers: find your voice and learn to blend it into a group. Work on basic ear training, sight singing and performance skills in an environment that emphasizes cooperation, teamwork and fun. In addition to presenting three concerts each year, the Children’s Chorus performs in Spanish at CMC’s “Posarela” celebration each December.

Embodiment & ExpressionOur body is our instrument. How we use it in-fluences the quality of our movements and the sound we make with our voices and our musi-cal instruments. This group class uses Body-Mind Centering(R) and Feldenkrais(R) methods to facilitate creative expression. It is an inquiry into the relationship between the body and the mind through movement, guided attention and non-verbal dialogue. This work can create fertile ground for new performance material and im-provisation. In the process students may find improvements in breathing, tone, coordination and technical proficiency as well as prevent and rehabilitate injuries. Students should bring their instruments if they have one and a piece of mu-sic to play or compose at the end of each class. Ear TrainingEar training is an important part of your devel-opment as a musician. The Adult Certificate Program (ACP) guides students of all skill levels through an integrated course of study. Your certificate program is built around an instrument (including voice), musical style (such as classical, Latin or jazz), and set of personal goals. You will work with the ACP Coordinator and in most cases a faculty member who serves as an advisor throughout your studies. Routine advisory meet-ings are scheduled to exchange feedback and assess your progress.

You and your advisor will work together to develop the overarching goals of your studies and regu-larly evaluate your progress with written reports. Your coursework will bring together a unique com-bination of Community Music Center’s wide array of offerings in private lessons, theory, musicianship and ensembles. This is in support of benchmark and culminating performances at CMC’s concert hall or other community venues.

Start your program at the beginning of any quarter and complete it in the recommended four to six quarters. Programs are built with a minimum of eight courses selected from CMC’s four core areas of study (see page 22).

Camp CMC Kids, make great music and great friends at Community Music Center this summer! Camp CMC, our week-long summer camp, offers kids the chance to play with other musicians and have fun at the same time. Activities will alternate between chamber group, ensemble, theory and musicianship classes and stu-dents will be grouped in ensembles by instrument and level. Campers will also participate in activities designed to develop general musicianship skills, such as playing percussion instruments, singing, and rhythmic movement. Camp CMC players will share their work at the end of the week in an informal performance.

The MDYMP is a full scholarship program that provides students with free weekly private instrumen-tal/voice lessons, theory/musicianship and ensemble classes, and the opportunity to experience multicultural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists. The curriculum emphasizes Latin music, both popular and classical. Students will perform at CMC in December and June, and will have additional performance opportunities off-site throughout the year. In collaboration with the San Francisco public schools and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, this program serves 7th-12th graders who live or study in the Mission District.

Concert Hall RentalsCMC’s Mission District Branch Concert Hall is avail-able for rent to the public for music-related con-certs and events, rehearsals, and sound recording. Renovated in 2006, the concert hall is wheelchair accessible and opens onto the courtyard of an Ital-ianate Victorian house dating back to the 1870s. There is a balcony at the rear of the hall, where there is also a sound recording booth. The audito-rium seats roughly 130.

For benefit concerts for other organizations, CMC must receive written confirmation of beneficiary. Admission fees over $15/$10 must be approved by CMC’s Executive Director.

$250 - For private teachers presenting their students in recital.

$40/hr - Rehearsals/auditions/additional concert hours.

Sound Recording ServicesThe Mission District Branch Concert Hall’s CD and digital audio tape (DAT) recording system offers performers the opportunity to produce high-quality audio recordings. Recording options are available to anyone renting the recital hall. CMC provides the services of a professional engineer for all recordings. Note: The recital hall is not a sound-proofed building. Recordings may pick up ambient sound.

Fees (recording engineer provided)$175 - Recordings with a Basic Rental. The rates include a recording engineer for three hours (pre-concert set up plus concert recording) and one CD-R ($5 for additional CDs). Add $50.00 for each hour of engineer’s services beyond the first three hours (cancellation fee $45). $85/hr - Recordings during regular CMC operating hours. Q: Do I need a registration appointment to sign up for classes?

A: Yes. All new students must make an appoint-ment with the registrar to sign up for private or group classes. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis and there is no guarantee that you will receive your desired class.

Q: Is it necessary to sign up for all 12 weeks (8 weeks in Summer session) of the quarter?

A: We work on a quarterly basis and do not make special arrangements unless students sign up af-ter the quarter has begun.

Q: Can I still sign up for lessons or classes after a quarter has begun?

A: Yes. We add new students on pro-rated basis, charging only for the lessons taken from their starting date through the end of the quarter. Call your nearest branch or check our website for class availability.

Q: I studied at CMC years ago. Am I considered a new student or a returning student?

A: If you have not studied at CMC for more than two quarters, follow registration instructions as a new student. If you have a good payment history, you may have some priority over new students. Q: What if I miss a lesson?

A: There is no credit, reimbursement or make-up for missed lessons. It is a courtesy to inform your teacher if you plan to miss a lesson and it is at the discretion of the teacher to provide a make-up lesson.

Q: What if I get sick and miss a lesson?

A: Teachers are not required to make up a missed lesson due to a student’s absence. A leave of ab-sence may be granted by the teacher (with regis-trar’s approval) in cases of serious illness or injury.

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?

A: We welcome anyone to apply for a fee reduc-tion on the sliding scale. You must show proof of the family’s monthly net (after tax) income (or proof of your own monthly net income if you are single). If you are self-employed, you may submit bank statements and your tax return from the

previous year. The sliding scale discount will be applied on the date this information is submitted.

Q: How is the discount determined?

A: The sliding scale discount is based on your household’s size and the monthly net income of the family.

Q: Can I apply for a full scholarship for private lessons?

A: Any student currently a junior in high school or younger can apply for a full scholarship if the family is receiving a CMC sliding scale discount. There are scholarship auditions in May each year. Students applying for a scholarship should have at least one year of instrument study at CMC and their current CMC teacher’s recommendation.

Q: What if I am not happy with my class?

A: The registrar can work with you to find a better schedule, or you may drop the class after the first lesson. If you want to drop the class, notice must be given to the registrar at least 24 hours before the second week’s class in order to receive a re-imbursement for the remaining lessons. You will then be charged only for the first lesson (and the registration fee, if applicable).

Q: Will I have the chance to perform for an audience?

A: We welcome all students to sign up for stu-dent recitals which are scheduled on Sundays throughout each quarter. There are also Perfor-mance Workshops hosted by faculty members. The instrument and the topic vary from quarter to quarter.

Q: Are parents allowed to stay in the room where the class is held?

A: For children who are enrolled in private classes, parents are allowed to stay in the room with facul-ty approval. In group classes, parents are allowed to stay in the room only for the first class.

Q: Do you offer summer programs for kids?

A: Camp CMC is held at the Mission District Branch for a week in June every year. Other classes for children held over the summer may include Fam-ily Music, Music for Children, String Orchestra for Children, Piano for Kids, and private lessons.

Sliding scale discount*: Based on household size and monthly net income. Verification docu-ments are required and students must re-apply annually. To apply, submit the Sliding Scale Ap-plication at registration. Applications are avail-able at either branch or at www.sfcmc.org.

Private lesson/group class discount*: All tu-ition for group classes (see pgs. 5-19) is reduced by 50% with concurrent enrollment in private lessons, except for: Music for Children and Piano for Kids.

Work-study: Work exchange for course credit is available for students over 18. Continuing stu-dents are preferred and availability is limited.

Free classes: The Children’s Chorus (see p.15) is tuition-free, and Teen Jazz Band (see p.14) is completely fee-free.

Senior discount*: Seniors aged 65+ can receive a 50% discount on full tuition.

Household discount: Each additional person from the same household enrolling in private lessons or group classes will be given a discount of $1.50 per lesson or class. This discount applies to full-fee students only.

Merit scholarships for youth: A limited num-ber of full scholarships for private lessons are awarded to students age 18 and under based on financial need and merit (see p.28). Jur-ied auditions are generally held each spring. Comprehensive Youth Scholarship pro-grams: Other scholarship programs include Comprehensive Musicianship Program, Inner City Young Musicians Program, and Mission Dis-trict Young Musicians Program (see pgs. 24-25).

Discount instrument rental: A quarterly rental fee of $35 or $50 (depending on the rental instrument, with an additional $25 refundable deposit) is due at the time of rental. Instruments must be returned at the quarter’s end unless other arrangements are made with the registrar. Limited availability.

Registration Policies

New student registration: New students must call the registrar at the branch through which they wish to study in order to make a registration ap-pointment. (See new student registration dates under Academic Calendar on p.1).

Purpose of registration: Registration is for scheduling and payment purposes only; the stu-dent’s first meeting with the faculty member will take place at the first lesson or class.

Current student registration: Current students must notify the registrar at the branch at which they are registered, during the specified dates, that they wish to continue their lesson or class. Students who do not do so will be dropped. (See current student registration dates under Academ-ic Calendar on p. 1).

Late registration: Individuals unable to register during new or current student registration should contact the registrar at the branch where they wish to study. Late registration is pro-rated and on a space-available basis.

Payments: Full payment is due at registration. We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Ameri-can Express and Discover. If payment is not made, student will be dropped immediately. In case of financial hardship, one half of the payment due may be paid at registration, with the balance due by the fifth lesson or class (third for Summer Quar-ter). There is a $15 check return fee.

Missed lessons: Students pay tuition regard-less of their attendance. Students must notify the registrar before any absence, but this does not exempt the student from payment. Faculty mem-bers are not required to make up missed lessons caused by student absences. Faculty members may make up lessons caused by faculty member absences, or a credit will be applied to the stu-dent’s account.

Leaves of absence: In cases of serious illness or injury, a leave of absence may be arranged. Prior approval of both the faculty member and registrar is required. If approved, credit may be given for two or more consecutive absences.

Discontinuation: CMC reserves the right to discontinue a student’s enrollment at any time for reasons including, but not limited to: poor at-tendance, non-payment of fees, lack of interest, or disruptive behavior. If a student is dropped for non-payment of fees, the student might be able to continue the quarter by paying the unpaid bal-ance.

Refunds: Tuition refunds are given when lessons or classes are canceled by CMC. A refund, minus the first lesson or class cost plus registration fees, may also be given if the student decides not to continue after the first lesson or class and notifies the Registrar at least 24 hours prior to the second lesson. If the registrar is not notified at least 24 hours in advance, the student is responsible for the full quarter’s tuition.

Photo and video release policy: CMC occasion-ally photographs or videotapes students for its publications. Compensation will not be provided to these individuals. See photo release statement in CMC’s Registration Form (reverse).

After the quarter begins:- It is never too late to register for classes. Start by clicking the Register tab and complete the online form. You will be contacted within 1 to 3 business days.
