In completing his ight, Barrington also became the rst black man and the rst Jamaican to y solo round the world.

Barrington Irving Junior, who is 23, landed a small plane in the US state of Florida in late June, three months after starting his journey from the same place.

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.  The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn't know which number to call.  He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nation-ally recognised name for this purpose.  In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Sta would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE'. Please forward this. It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about his. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.  For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc   PLEASE PASS THIS AROUND AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE AS THIS CAN HELP IN AN EMERGENCY

Leading business men, journalists, servicemen, a re-ghter, lawyers and media experts are amongst the twenty one men   that have been named in the rst-ever national role model programme for black boys and young black men by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears. Announced at the launch of the role model scheme last night, the event was hosted by the Commu-

nities Secretary alongside  Kwame Kwei Armah and Baroness Scotland, and Minister for Higher Education David Lammy.Guest at the launch of the scheme included REACH role models, the wider mentoring group, parliamentarians, journalists and many people from the prestigious  Power List of the UK's most successful people from African Caribbean communities. The REACH group was set-up by Government in 2006 and had 22 members drawn from a variety of sectors, including the voluntary and community sector, education, academia and law enforcement. The REACH report, entitled An Independent Report to Government on Raising the Aspirations and Attainment of Black boys and Young Black Men , highlighted a number of barriers preventing black boys from reaching their full potential and made a series of recommendations on how these issues can be tackled.

Communities Secretary launches REACH role model scheme

Improved engagement between schools and parents was identied as one of the barrier to ensuring successful educational achievement of people from this group.  The strengthening and reporting and monitoring of race equality in schools was also a key recommendation. With recent research indicating that the institutional racism within schools , is a key factor in the underachievement of black pupils it is clear that a lot of work needs to be done within wider society as well as in the community if sustainable lasting change is to be achieved. The REACH report also recommended a strengthening of support of Black led Voluntary and Community Sector organi-sations, as these are often the organisa-tions working most closely with young black men at risk of dropping out.A national black role modelling programme was also one of the key recommendations in the REACH report. The subsequent nationwide recruitment campaign attracted over 200 applications from successful professional men from African Caribbean communities across the country.

The REACH panel, which included fashion designer and businessman Ozwald Boateng, entrepreneur and winner of the

Apprentice Tim Campbell, founder and Director of Operation Black Vote Simon

Woolley and Metropolitan Police Superin-tendent and founder of the Black Police association Leroy Logan selected the nal twenty one role models to form the rst national group of its kind. These men will work to help ensure young black boys are equipped to navigate many of the obstacles which are routinely placed in their way of their ambitions. Drawing from the wide talent pool from within the black community, the rst group of REACH Role models dispel the myth of underachievement among black men. Their success stories are an inspiration not only to young black men but to anyone who is motivated by other people's success. The new REACH role models have been drawn from almost every profession imaginable and includes leaders in the elds of law, the military, the media, business, local government, nance and the navy. All the men on this programme were selected because of the outstanding track records and ability to inspire a next genera-tion of black Britons to overcome stereo-types and full their potential.

The celebration of an organisation that has gone from strength to strength over the years. from a small charity formed tewenty-one years ago by a small group of dedicated individuals, ACCI has grown to a large organisation employing over thirty members of sta. it has taken a lot of hard work and eort to reach this stage and it has not been without obstacles.

The sta at ACCI often have to work with limited funding and resources. The only thing that ensures that activities do take place, is the dedication and commitment of the sta and members working together.

When Acci was founded 21 years ago by a group of Wolver-hampton Rastafarians, it was probably not thought that it would have grown into to such a vibrant and community involved organisation. The African Caribbean Community Initiative, also known as

ACCI, was set up in January 1987 resulting from the concern of the black community about the growing numbers of young African Caribbean’s suering or at risk of suering from mental ill health together with the problems associated with the various diversities of the illness. At the same time the organisation looked at the visibly disproportionate numbers of African Carib-bean people in psychiatric institutions; and the lack of aftercare and day care provi-sions oered by mainstream services with regard to the African Caribbean commu-nity.

The 21st anniversary is a celebration of 21 years of service to the black community in Wolverhampton

Eddie Martin Noble was born in Jamaica in 1917. He volunteered, aged 25, to serve for Britain in World War Two. When he arrived in 1943 he was stationed at a RAF base in East Anglia. On 11 July, 2007, he died at the grand age of 90 at St Joseph Hospice in Hackney, East London. A Charmed Life is Eddie’s story.

There has been a Black presence in Britain since Roman times. The seeds of modern migration were sown with the 10,000 Caribbean service men and women who, like Eddie Noble, volunteered during World War II. But the transformation of post-war Britain started on 21 June 1948 when the MV Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. The 492 men and women and the Commonwealth citizens that followed have played such a signicant role in creating modern Britain.

Now we must preserve the legacy of this iconic genera-tion - the Windrush Generation. Promoting the Windrush legacy is vital - for young people and for those of us who learnt little of Britain’s multicultural history at school. The Windrush experience tells us about adven-ture and exploration, about hardship and survival, about community and integration.

But this is not just about the social, cultural and historical context. This is about individual stories. The Windrush Generation is now disappearing. Many of these pioneers are passing away. A number returned to the Caribbean while others languish in residential and nursing homes.

Their legacy is evident in the many people of Caribbean heritage shaping Britain’s public life, locally and nationally. Along side the high prole Parliamentarians, community activists of African, Asian and African descent sit on the boards of public sector bodies and voluntary sector organisations.

But a major contribution of the Windrush Generation has been to stimulate a Britishness based on nurturing social justice and commending the values of hard work, tolerance and respect. Campaigns for racial equality from the1950s to the 1970s were the British equivalent of the civil rights movement. Subsequent human rights and equalities legislation have made Britain more humane and socially aware.

The legacy is a vital part of the mainstream. Think of the exquisite African-centric artwork of Chris Oli representing Britain in the 2003 Venice Biennale, or the focus on London’s diversity as the centrepiece of the successful London 2012 Olympic bid. This is why Every Generation Media has produced A Charmed Life, a documentary based on the life of Eddie Noble. It is a deeply personal and humorous story of how one man’s challenges and successes inculcated a strong belief to educate and inspire young people. Eddie’s life has already been internationally recognised in Small Island, Andrea Levy’s award winning account of Caribbean immigrants’ experiences in post-war Britain. The book was partly based on Eddie’s autobiography Jamaican Airman. Eddie’s views are controversial. But his honesty and generosity in sharing his life story helps us understand his generation’s thinking. What was the personal impact of colonisation in the Caribbean? Of racism in the RAF? The colour bar in post-war Britain? Eddie’s story is a testimony to the importance of education in stimulating social mobility and tackling inequality in society.

“There is no force like success, and that is why the individual makes all eort to surround himself throughout life with the evidence of it; as of the individual, so should it be of the nation.”.

A Jamaican living in the States was down on his luck. Out of work and broke, he started going around to various Companies in the city begging for a job, any job.  Finally he got to the zoo. The zoo-keeper looked stressed out. The monkey escaped last night", the zoo-keeper said,  If you are willing to put on a monkey suit and stand in the monkey's cage for a couple days, I'll pay you". The Jamaican immediately accepted. The pay was OK and the work wasn't hard. He swung from the tree, and the kids fed him fruits and nuts. He actually started enjoying himself. He even started adding a Few acrobatic moves that he had seen on TV.  Late in the afternoon he swung a bit too vigorously, lost his Grip and ew clean out of the monkey cage and landed in the lion cage next door. The lion let out a huge roar and our friend in the monkey suit bawled out, "LAWD GOD, MI DEAD NOW". The huge lion immediately pounced on him, grabbed him by the throat and whispered,  Man shut yuh mout, if yuh evah mek mi lose di likkle wuk yuh si..."

Right now, in the midst of a so-called recession, many people are still able to, and do, demonstrate wealth and abundance. These individuals have overcome the dominant thoughts and beliefs of the mass consciousness that money is in short supply. Unfortunately, many people still believe they can’t live day to day; they won’t make it through the week; they can’t make ends meet; they don’t know what to do to get some of the shrinking money supply. Many people who believe this way are people of colour. We have been duped into believing we will never be self-supporting, self-sucient, and capable of standing on our own. We are dependent on the system to get better, give us a break, and take care of us. Many of us still believe the system can and will provide the economic healing we need – Until today! Now hear this, God does not have a money problem! Everything God made is self-sucient, including you. If you want to know what to do about money, ask God.
