For two special guests of Second Harvest Community Food Bank that meant traveling half way across the country to spend the day volunteering at our Fresh Start Pantry. Meet Justin Wolverton from Indianapolis, Indiana and Jess Kurti from Kissimmee, Florida, two individuals that decided to go a different direction than most this year. Justin’s path led him to do a project he calls “The Loving Year” and dedicate a year of his life doing 365 acts of love throughout the United States. His acts of love varied from paying overdue utility bills, leaving love notes around, to buying a meal for a couple down on their luck. Justin made his way to St. Joseph where on June 2, 2016 he volunteered in Fresh Start to do his 89th Act of Love. “What a fun day! My job was to assist the shoppers as they came through the store, restock and organize the shelves, and lifting potatoes. I love working with people who love their work!” said Justin, “Second Harvest is passionate about what they do and they work hard to keep their community fed!” In 2012 Jess was downsized from her job at Florida Power and Light. After a long road trip across the country she returned to Florida and decided she wanted a purpose-driven life, a life of service over self. She started by finding out more about her local food bank. After seeing many of her former co-workers struggling to make ends meet she decided to become a regular volunteer at the food bank. At a volunteer appreciation lunch in July 2014 she asked the President of her food bank if anyone had ever volunteered at all 200 of the food banks in the Feeding America network. His answer was no and her answer was, “I think I’m going to do that.” In addition to volunteering she decided to also take on the 50 State Marathon Club and in September 2015 she completed her goal. According to Jess, “My mission is to raise awareness of our nation’s charitable food system and their fight against hunger and poverty, which I call the Beast of Burden Challenge.” For volunteer opportunities at Second Harvest visit www.OurCommunityFoodBank.org to register. OurCommunityFoodBank.org | FALL 2016

In July, Second Harvest Community Food Bank was announced as one of the recipients of the first Mosaic Life Care Community Connections grant funding.According to their website Mosaic Life Care chose 10 recipients to receive $1.2 million in Community Connect funding which is designed to address population health issues in the St. Joseph area.

Second Harvest submitted a proposal for funding of the Second Harvest Fresh Mobile Pantry and received $187,000 toward the project.

The Fresh Mobile Pantry is designed to provide access to fresh food for our Partner Agencies that lack the capacity to store fresh produce and protein. Some agencies in our service territory are only able to offer a food product to individuals three or four times per year due to lack of food product available and/ or infrastructure to stock needed food to distribute more food on a more regular basis. The mobile pantry would encourage distribution more often to locations such as these to provide more access to fresh produce and to serve additional individuals with better nutritional choices.

“A lot of times, these pantries are in borrowed space and have limited refrigeration and freezer capacity. This will be a refrigerated truck and really give us a lot of flexibility,” Executive Director, Chad Higdon said. “We can go to communities and set up in a parking lot or community center and distribute food that way, or work in conjunction with an existing pantry that already has set hours and individuals coming in to access food from their pantry and supplement that with additional fresh protein and produce”

Sincere thanks to Mosaic Life Care for their generous support and commitment to improving the health of our community.

OUR MISSIONOur mission is to feed the hungry in Northwest Missouri and

Northeast Kansas through a network of Partner Agencies

and direct service programs and engage the region in the

fight to end hunger.

OUR VISIONA hunger-free Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas.

“I want to give back to ensure Second Harvest is here to help those who are hungry.”

Our friends and loyal supporters know that hunger is not a short-term problem. Many people who plan their estates include Second Harvest in their will. Their foresight and support will make a huge impact on many lives as an investment in the future.

Recently, Second Harvest was blessed to receive a generous estate gift from the trust of Beverly Meade, which will help provide nearly

280,000 meals! Mrs. Meade’s thoughtfulness and planning will help us continue to reach out and fight to end hunger inour region.

You can leave a legacy without immediate personal impact! Consult with your professional financial counsel to designate a planned estate gift. You will make a difference for many years to come!

Leave a Legacy

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made

to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.

Coming soon to your neighborhood…..Second Harvest Fresh Mobile Pantry!
