What stands out the most about the Shaganappi community is that there has been a big drop of population from 2009 to 2010. The community is recovering very slowly from that drop, but it is also very visible that before and after that drop, the overall population has been consisted over the years. By looking at the age distribution in Shaganappi, it becomes very clear that the number of people between the ages 35 to 64 is very consistent as well. The high number of people between the ages of 25 to 34 suggests that there still is a few people that most likely are first time home owners that are trying to establish themselves. However, overall these statistics and the higher employment rate show the Shaganappi community is an elderly community with more matured and settled people living in there. We think that the fact that there is a golf course located within the community has a lot to do with that because a golf course raises the standard of living within the immediate area und it also raises the prices of living.

Health Status/ Indicators/ Behaviors

In this area we have researched the Health Status/ Indicators/ Behaviors in Shaganappi and in Calgary in general. These things include chronic disease rates, smoking rates, drug and alcohol use, participation in sports and recreation activities, access to health care services and other health related issues.

In Shaganappi there are also several different types of health care services that are provided. Two of the main Old Folks/ Nursing homes are the Bethany Care Center and the Sunny Hill Wellness Center. The Bethany Care Center is located on 18th street NW, and the Sunny Hill Wellness Center is located on 8th avenue NW. The Brentwood Care Centre is another Old folks home, this is located on 16th avenue NW. This home provides long-term care. Another Health care service they provide is the Community Health Services- Shaganappi Complex. This community health complex provides many services including prenatal services, postpartum services, health promotion and disease prevention, communicable disease services and school health services. The Shaganappi Complex is located on 8th avenue NW.

I have attempted to call two organizations that are related to drug and alcohol abuse. The first one was Alcohol anonymous and the second one was Alcohol and Drug assessment counseling (ADAC). They both informed me that they don’t keep any statistics or data of individuals who come for help. They also informed me that finding statistics of people who are drug or alcohol abusers is an extremely difficult thing to do. Even tougher is finding drug and alcohol abuse stats for specific communities in Calgary. This is an area where we can look further and in part two of our project we can talk to more people in the community that may be able to guide us in a direction. This is also an area that in the future data can be explored.

According to Stats Canada in 2011 smoking rates dropped all around the country. The smoking rate in 2011 was at 17 percent for individuals in Canada. The teenage smoking rate from teenagers age 15-17 was down to 9 percent. In a 2009 Stats Canada survey it showed that for individuals in Canada above the age of 15, 56 percent are never smokers. There are 44 percent are ever smokers, which means they may have had a smoke or have the occasional smoke in their life. 27 percent are former smokers and 18 percent are current smokers. This is down from a 1999 similar survey that showed 25 percent of the population as current smokers. Finding smoking rates in Calgary is a tough task as well. I have looked at several sources on the Internet but have been unsuccessful. I also believe this is something we can explore in the second part of our project. Finding out these stats could be useful for future consideration of programs.

Shaganappi has several different types of sports and recreation activities in the area. One is the Shaganappi Hall and Tennis Club. This is an indoor tennis hall that you can get a membership at

to play. In the area is also the Shaganappi Point golf course, this is a 27-hole golf course and also has a driving range.

The Shaganappi area is a part of the South West Athletic Association and the designated team for that area is the Calgary Royals Hockey Club. The Royals is high-level competitive hockey and have these high level teams from Bantam up, which is about 16 years of age. High-level hockey players from our community would most likely be playing on this competitive team.

Hockey players from our area that are not looking to or are at the skill level to play on this team will play in the Calgary minor hockey association. This league has teams at every skill level and every age level. According to Stats Canada about 1.5 percent of the populations are registered hockey players. The Shaganappi community contains a baseball diamond, tobogganing hill, ice rink and a playground. The playground and baseball diamond would be getting used in the summer and the ice rink and tobogganing hills in the winter.

Existing Programs

The Wildwood Elementary School both have a wide variety of services already existing at their schools that have a similar aim as the YMCA does, to provide “vulnerable students in Grades 4 to 6 with literacy support, an opportunity to take part in structured recreational activities and the chance to enhance their academic and social skills”. Some of these include:

1. Calgary Reads: Volunteers support students as they learn to read, and promote professional development.

2. Daily Physical Activity: The school has its students enrolled in a physical education class which they participate in daily.

3. K-5 Swimming Program: Students participate in swimming lessons.4. K-6 Ice/Inline Skating Program: Students are given the opportunity to participate in

ice and inline skating with instruction from a teacher.5. Outdoor School Program: Students are given the opportunity to experience outdoor

activities with supervision, and taught outdoor skills. 6. Kid Zinc: A before and after school program for kids in grades 1-6 which provides

them with a safe, organized and fun environment consisting of creative arts and recreation program.

Crime Rate (Calgary Police Services, 2012)

The social indicators for Shaganappi confirm the suggestions made about the community in the “Demographics” section. The visible minority within Shaganappi is very low, even though the number has been growing over the years. The Crime Rate is also fairly low and there is not a lot of thefts happening in the community. This suggests that Shaganappi is a target for more mature people to live in.

Local Resources

This section has been done for Rosscarrock and Shaganappi together because the two communities are neighbor communities and therefore share quite a few local resources. It looks at how many and what kind of resources are available to the people living within the two communities.

Rosscarrock & Shaganappi

With these two communities there are not many local resources within them. Many of them are located in surrounding communities and have to be used for many communities. An example of this would be the Shaganappi Library; which provides services for Spruce Cliff, Shaganappi, Rosscarrock, Wildwood, and West Gate. Just to name a few of the communities.

A main resource that is located within Rosscarrock would be the Fire Hall, EMS and Police station which are all located within the same city block. And the closest Medical Clinic is located in Spruce Cliff, which also provides its services to many communities.

Within Shaganappi, there is a Golf course and an off leash area for pet owners to walk their animals. Each Community has a Community Center but has very limited hours of operation. Looking forward in the next part of the project we will see if these centres’s are or could be used for various groups and activities.

The main Recreation facilities near Rosscarrock and Shaganappi are:

- Killarney Aquatic and Recreation Centre - Optimist Arena and Athletic Park- Mount Royal University- Westside Recreation Centre

Within these two communities there is very little space for business locations. The main locations are along Bow Trail and at Westside Mall. Unfortunately there is very little space for

Page 11

Page 13: Community Profile Shaganappi€¦  · Web viewBoersma, Robert;Buergi, Raphael;Stewart, Mason;Van Keulen, Ryan;Vlot, Rob

expansion within these communities for future growth of recreation facilities and local businesses.

Opportunities

We feel that in the Shaganappi area there is definite opportunity for more research in the Health Status/Indicators/Behaviors part of our report. It was very tough to find statistics in this area and feel that with some primary research and speaking to people inside the community we may be able to find what we are looking for. Another thing we have noticed was that in this area there are not many outdoor playgrounds, this may be an area of future opportunity to this community. We also feel that more opportunities will arise as we continue are research into these communities.

Conclusion

Shaganappi is a well established community. It has been established before 1955. With this, very little development has been made within the community with regard to local businesses, education, city parks, and recreation. Many of the programs that are in place today have been in place for many years already and some community members are reluctant to change.

Part B: Community Engagement

Information gathered from Interview with a City of Calgary Community Social Worker

On March 20th our group set up a phone interview with a City of Calgary Social Worker. She is currently in charge of several areas of Calgary including Shaganappi. We asked her several questions about the community and feel we got some great information.

We started off by asking her what she liked about the Shaganappi community. She started off by saying that the community “has a lot of history.” She also said that the community “has a lot of diversity” and went on to explain not necessarily ethically but also financially. She also liked that the community was “quiet.” She went on to explain that the reason that it is quiet is because of the high population of elderly people in the community.

We then went on to ask her what the overall atmosphere would be when you are in the Shaganappi community. She went on to say that the atmosphere would be about the same as above its “quiet.” Again this is largely to do with the amount of elderly people that live in the community. She said all around there is a “positive” vibe when you are in the Shaganappi community. When we asked her what she felt was a concern in the community of Shaganappi moving forward she replied by saying “to be totally honest I don’t have any concerns for this community moving forward.”

We then asked her about the perception that outsiders may have of this community. She said that a common misperception people may have is that “Shaganappi community and Shaganappi Calgary Housing are in the same community.” She said this is a mistake she even makes on occasion thinking that the Shaganappi Calgary Housing is in the same community as Shaganappi. The Shaganappi Calgary Housing is actually in the Redcliff Community. She also said “people use them interchangeably when they are not the same thing.” When asked about the diversity in the community she replied by saying, “It is not necessarily racially diverse but it is quite diverse in housing types and income levels.”

Asking about ongoing trends in the community she was not sure but didn’t think there were any ongoing trends. She replied by saying that the community is quite “static and not very high profile.” We replied by asking if the community is “static and content” and she agreed.

When asked about the participation level among people living in the Shaganappi Community she replied by saying “I think that people either participate in this community or they don’t.”

Page 13

Page 15: Community Profile Shaganappi€¦  · Web viewBoersma, Robert;Buergi, Raphael;Stewart, Mason;Van Keulen, Ryan;Vlot, Rob

She didn’t think the people who weren’t participating were necessarily missing out but they just had their own different types of interests.

We then asked her if we could ask a couple questions about the current YMCA program that is running in the Shaganappi area. We asked what some of the impacts are that have resulted from this program. She said, “That the impacts are far reaching because she knows that the families really rely on the program and they really need the program.” She believes that “a lot of the families would be lost without the programs because of the amount of kids they have to take care off.” This basically gives the parents time to get home from work without having to worry about their children. This time also gives the immigrant children time to socialize with other children and get used to the culture in Canada.

We also asked her what in her opinion could be done to improve the current programs in the future. She believes that two main things that could be improved would be “to make the programs on a daily basis and to try and get more outreach from the parents of the children in the programs.” She went on to say that this is hard to achieve due to the different mandates the YMCA has to follow. If the programs could be run on a daily basis we do believe that this could be of a big benefit to the children and the parents. We asked if she sees progress in the kids that are involved in these types of programs. She said, “Absolutely the kids that come to the programs generally do better in school and they have better social skills. They also generally work better in groups and learn skills that they can use in their day to day lives.”

We then asked if the City of Calgary runs any other programs in this area. She replied “yes we do, we run a girls only program on Mondays, and a youth drop in program on Thursday nights.” She also said “we use to run a boys program.” This program ended because it was running on Fridays and was not getting sufficient participation. They also run summer camps that run full time in the summer. We also asked if it was tough to get the boys to come to these programs. She replied by saying, “yes and no, depends on what it is.” This makes sense because it has largely to due with if the program has lots of physical activity or not. She also informed us that in this community they will be doing a major upgrade to the basketball and tennis courts. This will hopefully bring kids into the community more and there will be more potential to get these kids involved in the community.

What stands out the most about the Shaganappi community is that there has been a big drop of population from 2009 to 2010.

The age distribution from 25-64 is very consistent. High population of residents between 25-34, this shows that there may be several

new homeowners in the area. However, overall these statistics and the higher employment rate show the

Shaganappi community is an elderly community with more matured and settled people living in there.

The Wildwood Elementary School both have a wide variety of services already existing at their schools that have a similar aim as the YMCA does

7. Calgary Reads: Volunteers support students as they learn to read, and promote professional development.

8. Daily Physical Activity: The school has its students enrolled in a physical education class which they participate in daily.

provides them with a safe, organized and fun environment consisting of creative arts and recreation program.

Based on the above information it is clear to us that there is competition amongst the number of after school programs already in existence. However, the YMCA has the opportunity to form partnerships with the existing programs that could lead to more effective programs.

Community Engagement/Trends

From our interviews we were able to determine that:

Community members enjoyed that the area had a lot of history, also that the community has diversity.

Area members also enjoyed the community was “quiet” and had a relaxed/ positive vibe. This is largely to do with the elderly population.

Speaking to community members most agreed there were not many concerns in the community that needed to be addressed.

They enjoyed that the community was not very “high profile” and most members seemed content.

Felt programs that were run in the area like the YMCA program significantly helped parents.

Felt that several parents would be lost without after school programs due to work schedules and several children to take care of.

Also felt that children were growing from attending after school programs and especially helps children who are immigrants and learning language and culture.

Page 16

Page 18: Community Profile Shaganappi€¦  · Web viewBoersma, Robert;Buergi, Raphael;Stewart, Mason;Van Keulen, Ryan;Vlot, Rob

Most community involved is from the same people

Suggested Follow Up/ Future Opportunities

We felt that there were not many outdoor playing areas in Shaganappi, ex. Outdoor rink, playgrounds etc. This could be an area of opportunity because it does not give the kids many places to go after school.

We feel there is opportunity to mix the YMCA programs with the City of Calgary programs. Especially the camps and programs that are being run in the summer. This could definitely benefit both parties and will make the camps and programs run smoother. This is an area that could use follow up.

We believe that there could be more parent involvement in the current YMCA program and also other programs that are run in the community.

We also believe that there could be more involvement from the schools in the programs and also a way that after students have graduated from the program that they could stay involved.

Promotion of the program in the community. Giving parents a better idea what the program is about and letting parents know it is available.

We also believe because of the high population of elderly people in the area there could be a way to get them involved. Whether that’s in the program or in the community in general.

Also a way of closing the gap between the elderly people and the younger people in the area.

We also believe that there are not many stats available online about different types of Health indicators in Calgary in general. This is an issue that people are not willing to post the statistics freely about, but it is information that could be useful. For example alcoholic rates, smoking rates.
