The Pittsburgh Penguins are more than a hockey team. We are proud members of our community – from our players and coaches to our executives and office staff – and we believe we have a responsibility to use the unique platform of professional sports to make a deep and lasting impact on our city and our region.

It goes far beyond the $6.1 million that the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation contributed to charitable and community causes during the 2015-16 season (athough we are very proud of that!). It involves such wide-ranging efforts as delivering tablets to local schools through our signature Tablets in Education program; providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes since 2011 through the HEADS UP initiative; building 12 dek hockey rinks in the Pittsburgh region; awarding annual scholarships to deserving high school seniors; and holding unique charity events such as the Aces & Ice Casino Night and the ROOT Sports Charity Night.

Our players contribute in so many ways – many in private, out of the spotlight – but some of their more public ventures include visiting Children’s Hospital each season and personally delivering tickets to the homes and businesses of our season ticket holders.

Co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle have instilled a long-lasting commitment to community outreach and fan interaction through all levels of the Penguins organization. We are proud to serve the citizens of the Pittsburgh region – and especially the young people who are building such a strong foundation for a very bright future.

THE STORY OF THE PENGUINS FOUNDATION

The year 2010 proved to be a year of transition for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The team’s longtime home moved from Mellon Arena to a new state-of-the-art arena. That same year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was created, enveloping all of the organization’s charitable efforts under one umbrella.

Ironically, the demolition of Mellon Arena spawned the funding to establish a base for the Foundation’s work. Its first initiative was to create ornaments forged from the arena’s roof. In each of the next five years, the Foundation grew substantially.

Focused on our region’s youth, the Foundation has embraced a vast array of programs that emphasize education, physical fitness and the well-being of our area’s children and their families.

With strong leadership provided by Penguins ownership, the Foundation strives to continue its mission of serving the people of Pittsburgh through new and innovative programs.

THE MISSION OF THE PENGUINS FOUNDATION

To actively promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education, and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.

HOLIDAY CHEERCHILDREN’S HOSPITAL VISIT

Since the early 1980s, members of the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with team mascot Iceburgh, don their Santa hats and spread cheer to children spending the holidays in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Players take time to visit with children and their families and pass out gifts for the patients. This year, the players presented each patient with a plush penguin or a Kindle Fire tablet. They also signed autographs and posed for pictures. This annual visit has continued to be a treasured tradition that brings joy to countless children who are too sick to make it home for the holiday season.

THANKSGIVING TURKEY DISTRIBUTION

In partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the Penguins organization has annually helped make Thanksgiving a special holiday for 100 underprivileged families in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Since 2007, American-born Penguins players have visited a Pittsburgh community center to distribute turkeys and all the fixings for a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. During the 2015.16 season, the annual distribution occurred on November 16, 2015 with Phil Kessel, Ian Cole, Matt Cullen, Nick Bonino and Jeff Zatkoff delivering the Thanksgiving feast.

PROJECT BUNDLE-UP SHOPPING DAY

Every season, the Penguins team up with the Salvation Army for the Project Bundle-Up Shopping Day. This season’s event took place on November 12, 2015 following team practice. The Penguins players spent the afternoon shopping with young children in need of outerwear for the cold winter months. The children also collected autographs and posed for photos before returning to school. Penguins corporate partners DICK’S Sporting Goods and FOX’S Pizza assisted the Penguins to support this annual event.

OPERATION SHOEBOX

The Operation Shoebox program was designed to brighten the holidays for seniors residing in assisted living facilities who would not typically receive visits or gifts over the holidays. Penguins staff members from all departments donated beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts contained in shoeboxes. Ten days before Christmas, over 50 shoebox gifts were delivered to the residents of Manor Care in McMurray, PA.

TOYS FOR TOTS

Each December, the Penguins team up with the US Marine Corps to host a Toys for Tots collection. Over the past eleven years, more than 18,200 toys and $81,200 have been collected to support underprivileged children in our community. This season, the Penguins also partnered with 96.1 KISS Radio’s popular Stuff-A-Bus program to draw more attention and support for children in need during the holidays.

CHILDREN’S PRACTICE & PARTY

Each year, children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh and Lemieux Family Center, enjoy time with their favorite Penguins after practice. These special guests took in practice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and then enjoyed a pizza party with the entire team afterwards. Players mingled with the families as they signed autographs, posed for photos and shared laughs with the team’s littlest fans.

CROSBY & MALKIN CHARITY SUITES

Since 2008, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have each purchased a luxury suite at CONSOL Energy Center for local youth to enjoy the excitement of Penguins hockey. During the 2015.16 season, each player hosted over 20 different charitable organizations in his suite – each with an emphasis on children who are coping with difficult health issues, economic or family challenges. Suite guests all received a special gift from their host player along with a visit from Iceburgh for a memorable photo opportunity.

HONORING HOCKEY MOMS

COMMUNITY OUTREACH COMMUNITY REPORT | 2015.16

WE LOVE HOCKEY MOMS CELEBRATION

On March 31, 2016, hockey went glam. For the first time ever, the Penguins Foundation hosted a night to celebrate the sport’s biggest supporters during the Penguins game… Moms! The night aimed to show that even if she’s behind the scenes, our Moms bring glamour to this great game. During the game, fans had the opportunity to purchase autographed mystery pucks, participate in our special Glam Auction featuring designer handbags, and like always, purchase a ticket for the 50/50 Raffle. All proceeds from that night went directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) - a cause close to the heart of many Moms. In addition, the Penguins Foundation hosted an online contest encouraging children to nominate and recognize their Mom for her ongoing support. Selected Moms were welcomed to the game that evening courtesy of the Penguins Foundation and received a pink t-shirt, hat, rose and more as a thank you for supporting their child’s love of hockey.

HOLIDAY ONLINE AUCTION

Each holiday season, the Penguins Wives Association hosts an online auction. In December 2015, the ladies created themed baskets filled with items unique to their significant other. Over the past nine years, the team’s wives and girlfriends have donated over $101,000 to local charities through this initiative. This season’s selected charity, Blessings in a Backpack, received over $13,000 thanks to the Penguins Wives Association’s auction.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY

The Penguins Wives Association embraced the spirit of the holidays by participating in the Adopt-A-Family program. The ladies provided 20 underprivileged families with a variety of new, wrapped gifts for the holidays.

PENS & PINS

Pens & Pins, the signature event for the Penguins Wives Association, was created by the ladies in 2009. Benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, this bowling tournament brings players, coaches and wish kids together for a tremendous evening of strikes and spares. This season, on February 25, 2016, the event raised nearly $78,000 to help make wishes come true for local children with life-threatening illnesses. Since its inception, Pens & Pins has raised nearly $380,000 for this unbelievable cause.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH

The Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine teamed up in 2011 to create HEADS UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind to combat an epidemic of concussions in young athletes. The program has expanded each year to serve more youth and include a wider spectrum of sports.

Initially, the program included free baseline concussion testing for youth hockey players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and other hockey groups registered locally through USA Hockey programs. The program also included parental educational programs for the parents or guardians of youth hockey players.

The following year, the program expanded to include athletes of all sports ages 10 through 14. In 2013, the program added free neck-strengthening kits to help reduce the occurrence of concussions. In 2014, HEADS UP Pittsburgh provided free flexibility kits detailing precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions. And, in 2015, the program shared free balance discs to participants to help with core strength shown to aid in concussion prevention.

Since 2012, the Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build the dozen dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. The final dek, constructed during the 2015.16 season in South Park, opened on October 23, 2015.

In addition to funding by the Penguins Foundation, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support.

The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports including soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to set-up programs for the rinks, with assistance from the Penguins organization.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY

A unique effort between the Penguins and Sidney Crosby has given 6,200 children throughout the tri-state area an introduction to hockey. The Little Penguins Learn to Play program began in 2008 to share the excitement of our sport and teach our youngest fans about the game of hockey.

With the support of Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods, the program increased participation in youth hockey among children ages 4-8 by providing free equipment, including skates, to all registered participants. In the 2015.16 season, the Little Penguins Learn to Play program outfitted over 1,000 children. In addition, there were 28 instructional programs at 24 area rinks, including four designated for girls.

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE

The Penguins continually work on developing programs that make the sport both physically and financially available for the community. Our goal is to share the excitement of our sport and to support those who seek instruction and participation.

STEEL CITY ICEBERGSThe Pittsburgh Special Hockey Program is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities including autism, Down Syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. It focuses on teaching children and

adults to play ice hockey in an environment specialized to each individual’s ability. The Steel City Icebergs program is led by dedicated volunteers and USA Hockey adult coaches. Collegiate and youth ice hockey players assist the coaching staff which allows for a low player-to-coach ratio. In addition, it provides an environment for peer interaction to help the participants learn and form meaningful relationships.

MIGHTY PENGUINSThe sport of sled hockey provides a means for physically challenged individuals to play competitive ice hockey. Participants enjoy the physical activity, while the program also builds self-esteem and an opportunity to be a part of a competitive team. The Mighty Penguins were formed by volunteers from Shriners Hospital in Erie in May of 1998. Initially, the goal was to provide children and young adults with physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in a competitive sport. The parents and guardians of these players have seen firsthand the physical and emotional benefits of the program. Many local organizations have helped our program by donating ice time, equipment, customized hockey gear and insurance. Individuals throughout the area volunteer their time and talents to educate and assist the players. In addition, the Mighty Penguins are supported by a Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

PITTSBURGH ICEPittsburgh ICE (Inclusion Creates Equality) was established in 2000 to afford an opportunity to children with financial restraints to experience all aspects of the game of ice hockey. The program was created with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Alumni Association. The Pittsburgh ICE program provides children in the Pittsburgh area the opportunity to earn and experience the game of ice hockey at no cost.

ACES & ICE CASINO NIGHT

On March 22, 2016, Penguins players rolled up their sleeves and served as casino dealers at the team’s 2nd Annual Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media. The speakeasy-style event raised over $115,000 with proceeds benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Dressed in 1920s attire, the players dealt Blackjack and hosted Craps and Roulette games for the benefit of these tremendous charities. Along with casino games, the event featured a swing band, silent auction and tarot card reader to bring this era to life. Since 1986, the team has hosted a signature gala-style fundraiser with the full Penguins roster for the benefit of local children’s charities and has raised over $6.3 million for medical research.

CHARITY NIGHT ON ROOT SPORTSThe Penguins Foundation and Mario Lemieux Foundation teamed up for the 5th Annual Penguins Charity Night on ROOT Sports on March 3, 2016. The annual event raised over $1.6 million for the two foundations.

A total of 5,000 Penguins Charity Backpacks were sold both online and at the Penguins game. Each Penguins Charity Backpack included Penguins merchandise and team memorabilia including one autographed puck from the current Penguins roster and one autographed puck from a Penguins alumnus. Fans also had the chance to receive a jersey signed by Mario Lemieux or a member of the current Penguins team within their Penguins Charity Backpack. Since 2012, the annual auction has raised over $4.7 million, with proceeds benefitting the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer and neonatal research and the Penguins Foundation’s youth initiatives.

SUMMER STICKS

On September 15, 2015, the Penguins organization welcomed in the new hockey season by hosting a golf tournament to fund the Penguins Foundation’s annual scholarship programs. With the tournament’s overwhelming success and the support of Reed Smith, Foundation scholarships have increased from three in 2013 to a record 22 scholarships in 2015. A Penguins tradition for decades, the scramble-style tournament featured Penguins players and coaches serving as celebrity team captains.

HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCERThe annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night is held each autumn, highlighting the Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) program as a league-wide initiative to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. On October 22, 2015, the façade of CONSOL Energy Center was lit purple in tribute to HFC. Penguins players wore purple jerseys during the morning skate and throughout pre-game warmups. The commemorative HFC jerseys were then autographed and auctioned online raising over $28,000 to benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation and UPMC Cancer Center.

In addition, the team’s wives and girlfriends added to the HFC fundraising by selling mystery pucks on the concourse prior to the game. The Penguins’ coaching staff, team broadcasters and management wore HFC ties to support the initiative and the Ice Crew sported purple-highlighted apparel.

FREE GAME FOR KIDS

A team tradition since 2010, the Penguins Free Game for Kids gives our youngest fans an opportunity to attend a pre-season home game. Over 18,000 tickets were distributed to local children’s charities and youth hockey organizations for the September 26, 2015 pre-season game at CONSOL Energy Center. Since the program’s inception, approximately 108,000 tickets have been provided to children and their parents, guardians or chaperones to share in the excitement of Penguins hockey.
