INVITATION TO COUNCIL TO HOST THE BOTANIC GARDENS OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND – QUEENSLAND REGION BIENNIAL CONFERENCE IN 2014
Tony Roberts: 19/9/4-06 : #3811790
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that Council accepts the invitation to host the Botanic Gardens of Australia and New Zealand – Queensland region (BGANZQ) Biennial Conference in 2014.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Executive Committee of BGANZQ has invited Council to host the BGANZQ Biennial Conference in 2014 (Attachment 1). The event is typically held over 2-3 days and is attended by around 50 guests including curators, staff and volunteers from the member botanic gardens both in Australia and New Zealand. The Conference will be self-funded by delegate subscriptions and provides Council the opportunity to showcase our exceptional and unique botanical facilities and tropical environment.
BACKGROUND:
The Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand Inc (BGANZ) is the chief body representing the interests of botanic gardens in Australia and New Zealand. BGANZ promotes the interests and activities of Australian and New Zealand botanic gardens and botanic gardens generally and enhances the state of botanic gardens for the benefit of the community. BGANZQ is the Queensland regional branch of BGANZ. The BGANZQ Biennial Conference is typically held over 2-3 days. The Conference facilitates the following events:
The BGANZQ AGM, Meetings of various sub committees of BGANZQ, Presentations and Workshops on matters relating to the operations of botanic
gardens, Meetings of botanic gardens staff to exchange ideas and deliver botanic gardens
reports, Discussions, planning collaborative botanic gardens projects (eg. Queensland
Botanic Trail brochure (Attachment 2), 2020 Banks and Solander project, plant database for regional gardens, etc.)

Cairns Botanic Gardens staff will provide administration support for the event. The Friends of the Botanic Gardens have also indicated support towards this event. The Cairns Botanic Gardens Interpretive Officer is a member of the BGANZQ management committee.

Corporate and Operational Plans: The delivery of this conference links to Corporate Plan Goals 1 and 2: Goal 1 Caring For the Environment Goal 2 Building Vibrant Communities.
