Stall Spaces Still Available - Call 07713585816, 07774914436 or 07966954244

New Councillors:The Parish Council would like lo welcome our two new councillors. Cllr. Jean McVann and Cllr. Ian Handley. Both councillors were co-opted to ll vacancies on the parish council and we look forward to them becoming involved in the village.

Children's Playground:Many users will have noticed that the see-saw and basket swing have been removed from the children's play area on Flash Lane. The swing has problems with the design and has been returned to the manufactures for amendments to be carried out. We hope to have this returned in the near future. The see-saw has come to the end of its useful life and when the playground was inspected it was deemed to be unsafe, so it was removed. The Parish Council are aware of the usage of the play area and are discussing with contractors to purchase new equipment for the area and upgrade some of the existing equipment Your patience is appreciated in this matter.

Christmas Market:This year's Christmas Market will be on Sunday 2nd December from 11am to 4.30pm, at Bill Chafer Centre on Flash Lane. Bramley Brass Band and local choirs will provide entertainment and there will be many stalls selling seasonal goods. Bramley and Wickersley Lions have invited Father Christmas to be there on the day to greet the children and there will be crafts for the children to be involved in such as icing Christmas buns

and card making. If you are interested in having a stall see the advert in this issue of Spotlight.

Christmas Lights:The village lights will be switched on by Rachel Hurst at 6.30pm on 14th December. The switch on will be at theParish Hall with Bramley Brass Band playing seasonal carols. Afterwards light refreshments will be served in the Parish Hall.

Senior Citizens Coffee Morning:These are held in the Youth Club on Flash Lane on the rst Thursday of each month from 10am till noon. All senior citizens in the village are welcome to come and have a coee/tea and a good natter!

Skate Park:This project is still ongoing. It has been delayed by a large funding application having been turned down. The Parish Council is committed to this project and are looking at alternative designs and funding.

Mc Donalds:The Parish Council arc pleased that local food outlet Mc Donalds, are doing regular litter picking around the village. We would like to thank the sta at Mc Donalds for this positive initiative to try and keep Bramley tidy.

If any other local businesses would be interested in joining in this worthwhile project contact Cllr Malcolm Brown on 07966954244.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON:Maltby Town Council is holding an event to celebrate the switching on of Maltby’s Christmas lights. This will take place on Saturday November 24 at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall. The doors will open at 2pm and there will be a variety of stalls selling cakes, Christmas cards, jewellery, preserves, toys etc. Children can come along and make their own Christmas cards and post a letter to Father Christmas. Santa will be there in his Grotto and a visit for children to Santa is free. The afternoon’s entertainment is being provided by the Gillian Banks Theatre School and will include The Dreams and 2 Chique. They will be singing in the Hall from around 2pm throughout the afternoon. Rotherham lad Rob McVeigh, a nalist in the BBC TV show Every Dream will Do, will perform at approximately 4.10 and then switch on the Christmas lights at approximately 4.30pm. All welcome. The afternoon entertainment will be completed by Tia Treloar from Maltby. Tia aged 14, was the winner of Yorkshire’s Got Talent in November 2011.

BONFIRE AND FIREWORK DISPLAY:Maltby Town Council’s bonre and rework display on the Manor Field was once again a great success. The Bonre was lit by Sam Mitchell, Maltby’s Young Person of the Year and there was a fabulous display of reworks synchronised to music. Thousands of local residents turned up to watch this amazing display and to enjoy the disco entertainment provided by DB Entertainment. The Guy Fawkes competition was won by Mason Bunting and in joint second place was Paris Stoner and Jude Walters.

QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE BROCHURE:Maltby Town Council is in the process of producing a commemorative brochure to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The brochure contains photographs of the Gala and other activities which took place across the town, a copy of a letter from the Queen, as well as a brief history of Maltby. Once complete, a copy will be delivered to every household in Maltby as a souvenir of this occasion.

BRAITHWELL FLOWER BEDS:The council have considered the appearance of the ower beds along Braithwell Road and decided that they are unsightly and actually detract from the area. The wooden surrounds were rotted and the shrubs in the beds overgrown. Therefore, the ower beds have been removed and the area grassed by RMBC, funded by Maltby Town Council.

CIVIC SERVICE:Local dignitaries and approximately 120 residents attended a service at St Bartholomew’s Church on the 14th October. A civic reception followed at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall where the Mayor of Rotherham presented certicates to all nominees of the Civic awards. The Rt Hon Kevin Barron presented the Maltby Person of the Year Award to the Haynook Funding Raising Team and Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Dave Pickering presented Sam

Mitchell with the Young Person of the Year Award. Representatives from the 23 street parties and events funded by Maltby Town Council, were invited to the event in recognition of what they have done for their communities.

QUEENS DIAMOND JUBILEE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: This year the Town Council gave a unique award to a very special resident Mr Bruce Wilson who has worked as a volunteer within our community for over 20 years. He took part in the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, involving the children to keep their parks and streets clean, giving them a sense of pride in the place where they live. A rst aider at local gala’s and football tournaments, for the past 11 years he has been a rst responder, attending over 600 call outs and saving lives. The groups and individuals Bruce has helped are too numerous to mention.Maltby Town Council is proud to honour Bruce Wilson with the Queens Diamond Jubilee Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding service to the community. Lord Scarborough presented the award to Mrs Wilson and family as Bruce was unable to collect the award due to ill health.

MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL PLAN:The survey was distributed week commencing 15th October, and we apologise if your copy was not delivered in time to attend one of the consultation events. The number of copies returned is encouraging, but to achieve a true reection of what the public of Maltby want, please send in your views. The survey can still be found on line at: http://surveymonkey.com/s/DK98JWT OR collect a copy from the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall.

SECURITY BARREL

Taking Care With Taxis By Aaron JamesThe time for seasonal celebrations is fast approaching and at the end of a fun night out it is often a temptation to jump into the nearest cab in the rush to get home. While it may seem like a convenient solution it can be a danger, especially for women travelling alone. Private hire vehicles are only licensed to carry passengers who have pre-booked through a licensed operator. No prior booking means there isn’t a record of the journey or the driver and consequently no insurance in the event of an accident. During busy periods, such as Christmas, there may be drivers out there either operating outside the terms of their licence or even some with no licence at all. The safest course of action then is to pre-book for travel through a reliable private hire operator. Some operators, intent on providing their customers with piece of mind, specically employ female drivers for carrying female passengers and especially for those who are travelling by themselves.

Locally, one such rm is R-I-O Private Hire Services who are licensed by Rotherham Borough Council. Their clean cars and friendly drivers are available for those special celebrations and they pride themselves on their value and reliability. If their female driver service is required be sure to request this at the time of booking and if you are likely to need this service it might be a good idea to put their phone number into your mobile phone now. They can be contacted on 01709 203302.

SLIMMING EXPERT WINS AWARDHelping people achieve their dreams, especially when it comes to losing weight, is no mean achievement. Slimming World consultants are well known for being the most dedicated when it comes to real help and support through one of the most dicult things anyone ever has to do in their lives. So winning a special award for doing just that is pretty exceptional.Zoe Kemp who holds a group at Wickersley on Mondays says “This job is so very special. Watching someone change from having no condence, being embarrassed about their size and wearing shapeless clothes to someone who looks and feels great, brings its own rewards on a daily basis. But to have your work recognised in this way is, I must admit, a very proud moment for me.”Since Zoe started her group on 3rd September 2012 she has helped members lose 1056lbs, making Wickersley one of the best weight losing areas in the country. So well done to Zoe and well done to the slimmers of Wickersley.

Thanks from Adele’s By Aaron JamesJust twelve months ago, Adele Cassells was opening her new hair Salon in Wickersley. Having worked in the Wickersley area for seventeen years she nally took the plunge and invested in her own Salon. For all new businesses this is a worrying time. Would enough customers be attracted? Would the bills be paid? Will the venture succeed? Adele need not have worried. Since opening, her business has really taken o and the new salon has been very much welcomed by the people of Wickersley.

Having had such a successful rst year, through the pages of Community Spotlight, Adele wants to say “Thank you to all our customers because our success is down to them.” She, along with her sta, Charlie, Laura and Jo are grateful for all the support they have received and they all look forward to a second year serving the people of Wickersley and surrounding areas.

The impact Adele’s The Salon has had in the area is a result of the hard work and dedication of all who work there. They make every eort to make the customer experience a relaxed and friendly one. A wide range of services are oered, from pamper parties and colour correction service to Christmas party hair and relaxing and enjoyable wedding services. Additional beauty treatments are also oered by Rebecca. So, if you are tired of the same old, same old and feel it’s time for a change, why not visit Adele’s for that new look? A warm and friendly welcome most certainly awaits.

CORNERYou might know yourself inside out – what you like for tea, your favourite books, daily habits and your ideal partner profile. But if you don’t know your financial identity contained within your credit report you could be in for a nasty shock if you ever need to borrow money.

Even something as ‘normal’ as a mobile phone contract may require a check to your credit report - they’re not just for mortgages, personal loans or credit cards. Keeping it in good shape will ensure you are in best stead for good deals and interest rates. Failing to keep it looking healthy and you could end up struggling to get even the expensive, higher rate deals.

The biggest warning sign is a refusal of credit. Now if you always pay on time and owe no money the chances are your report is OK but the lending criteria of the company may be at odds with your profile (lots of house moves, for example, can be a problem). Either way, stop any further applications and get hold of a copy of your report. The major suppliers are Experian and Equifax but there are other providers which can be found online. For a small outlay you can see what’s what. If there are any incorrect details on your report then you can lodge these with the issuing agency who will assist you in making any changes.

So go on - for a little bit of effort you could make your future financial life a lot easier.

Spotlight on Community Spotlight! By Aaron JamesEvery month, at Community Spotlight On S66, we try to feature at least one local business among our pages by literally putting them under our “Spotlight.” The purpose of this is to help the organisation or trader to connect with the community and to give our readers a greater understanding of what that business has to oer by giving them more in depth information than regular advertising is able to do.

Since increasing our coverage, from an initial 5000 to the current 16000 homes and businesses by now including the whole of Maltby, we thought it was time we put ourselves under the “Spotlight.” We want to enable our new readership to connect with the aims and principles embodied within our magazine just as Wickersley and Bramley area residents have already done.

Community Spotlight on S66 is an independent community magazine serving the residents of S66. The free monthly magazine, designed and published by Community Spotlight Ltd. in Maltby, provides a lively mix of news and features on local issues and lifestyle topics. Unlike many regional magazines our product is specically designed to be a benecial tool for S66 residents. Its regular community events listings and community directory are included so that the magazine can be retained by the reader as an easy reference guide to what is happening in the area as well as being the rst point of call for accessing local services.

We aim to be at the heart of the community by promoting not only local businesses but relevant community events, charitable organisations and community services. Our vision is to help the whole community to connect with one another and we welcome the involvement of individuals as well as organisations and we encourage anyone who has something they wish to share with others in our area to contact us. Ultimately, we recognise that the success of our product is dependent upon the community being actively involved in the magazine at all levels. In this connection distribution of the magazine is not outsourced to a third party organisation. Instead, when a reader sees the magazine being posted through their door, the chances are that it has been delivered by someone who has advertised or contributed in some way and therefore has an interest in ensuring distribution is eected properly. It may even have been the Managing Director/Editor, Matthew Hodgkinson, who despite his position within the company is so committed to the community ethos that he maintains a hands on approach throughout all levels of the business.

Any question put to Matthew about the magazine always solicits an incredibly enthusiastic response illustrating his dedication. He explains, “When I rst created the magazine it was because of my longstanding commitment to helping in the

community. I’ve been involved in various community projects in the past but wanted to use my commercial design skills in a more positive way to promote the community ethos. S66 has a great diversity of businesses and a wide demographic mix and it occurred to me that nothing existed in terms of publications that oered a platform for the whole community to come together. I believe Community Spotlight lls the void. Its whole purpose is to connect everyone to the community through news items, events and local services. It also creates a platform for local businesses to advertise their products and services to the community in which they operate without having to spend huge amounts of money. Coverage for a whole year’s advertising in Community Spotlight can cost less than one week’s advertising in local newspapers. What’s more, unlike newspapers which are soon discarded, readers tend to retain the magazine for reference throughout the month and often longer. Reduced advertising costs often mean businesses can be more competitive with their own pricing which oers a real benet to local residents and encourages them to buy locally. Obviously, it then follows that the more money spent within the community improves the chances of creating employment opportunities so everyone benets. It’s all about bringing the whole community together for the benet of the whole community.”

Matthew clearly makes a convincing and enthusiastic argument, but what of his customers. What do they feel about the magazine? Andy and Angie Bowen, the proprietors of Mutts‘n’Mongrels Dog Grooming, are regular advertisers who wholeheartedly support Matthew’s approach. “As a relatively new business we simply could not aord the advertising elsewhere. Community Spotlight on S66 was and remains the perfect medium for us. As a local business we reach our target area without having to pay hefty fees for our advert to reach areas we simply don’t need. Our own ethos is in line with Matthew’s in that we try to involve ourselves in the community and keep our prices as low as we can for the benet of the community. The advertising rates are extremely competitive for the number of homes the magazine is delivered to and we know that the magazine is delivered because in return for further discount on our advertising we help to deliver it! The response we get from our investment is extremely good. It is clear that the magazine is well read throughout the month as we have a steady ow of enquiries even a fortnight after distribution. As readers as well as advertisers we nd the magazine to be designed very well with a high quality standard of content. From our own experience we can vouch for the eectiveness and value of editorial and advertising opportunities contained within the magazine and think the tagline “Connecting You with your Community” perfectly captures what Community Spotlight is all about. We wish the company every success as it continues to expand towards its objective of reaching all 20,000 homes in the S66 postal region.”

Kirsty Reaches New Heights! By Aaron James

Community Spotlight’s newest sta member, Kirsty Goodlad, is soon to ‘step into the abyss’ to face her greatest fears. Like all our sta Kirsty is locally born and committed to the community. She joins Community Spotlight in a sales and administrative role and explains, “I was recently employed by a company, called The Junction, who oered business advice, recruitment support, marketing ideas and information on all business related issues. I would set up both web pages and Facebook pages to create other marketing tools for businesses that had little or no budgets for their marketing. During my time there I regularly encouraged people, who had real fears about internet marketing, to ‘take the bull by the horns’ and give it a go. It occurred to me that I should really follow my own advice. I have long had a fear of heights and falling so decided to tackle my fears by facing them.”

Kirsty has found just the project to do this by having a go at the ‘Triple Whammy’ at the Abyss in Magna Science Adventure in Rotherham. ‘The Triple Whammy’ begins with a zip wire descent from seventy feet high along the two hundred and fty feet length of the building. That’s only to warm her up for the more adventurous tasks that await. Next up is a one hundred and fty feet free abseil. A free abseil means that she will be dropping into free air and not down the side of a wall. Then, if she survives these, she moves on to the nal task. For this she will step

from a platform, one hundred and fty feet in the air, and free fall to the ground; hoping against hope that the Powerfan, which is unique to the Abyss at this height, breaks her fall.

On completion of these trials Kirsty is not only hoping to have conquered her fears but, in doing so, also hopes to raise a large amount of money for local charity PTC community trust which supports disabled children in local schools through sport. She would welcome any sponsorship in her eort and invites Community Spotlight readers to visit her donation page at http://www.everydayhero.co.uk/kirsty_goodland.
