Our community – Listen to the story, read information about the community and answer the questions. Saibai is one of the northern-most islands of Torres Strait, about 5 km off the coast of Papua New Guinea. It’s a flat, swampy island surrounded by mangroves. We have about 300 people here. In Torres Strait, we have two main races of people – Melanesian and Aboriginal Torres Strait Islanders. Saibai people are Melanesian Australians. We have seven clans; Thabu, Dhoeybaw, Samu, Saibai koedal, Ait koedal, Suy Baydham and Umay. These animals and plants are our totems. On Saibai, we speak a dialect called Kalaw Kawaw Ya.

Thabu – Snake Clan, Dhoeybaw – Wild Yam Clan, Samu – Emu Clan, Saibai koedal – Crocodile Clan of Saibai village, Ait koedal – Crocodile Clan of Ait, on the east end of Saibai, Suy Baydham – Black and White Swamp Bird and Shark Clan, Umay – Dog Clan

Our language and clan identities are very strong; each clan has its own colours. The colour for Thabu Clan, who the story in this book belongs to, is red. Each clan also associates with the constellations of stars. The Thabu Clan constellation is the Seven Sisters, and we call them Singiyal. All the clans on Saibai have their own stories, dances and songs. Our Community

The Story of Girbar Late one afternoon, a woman named Girbar set out from her home at Ziril to fetch water from the Mag. She was carrying four kusul (koo-sool). There was a drought and the water was low, so she had to climb down the banks to the bottom of the waterhole. By the time she had collected the water, the sun had set and it was growing dark. In a hurry to cross the swampy country and reach her home before nightfall, Girbar quickly put the kusul filled with water over her shoulder and turned to climb the banks of the waterhole. As she did so, she noticed the dark reflections of the Madhubal on the surface of the water. Madhubal are rainmakers, rain spirits. They are magical beings who look like humans and wear big headdresses. They live in the clouds in the sky, and they dance and sing to make rain fall. Girbar realised she had been surrounded by the Madhubal, who were standing around the edge of the waterhole. “Why have you come here and what do you want?” she asked, feeling frightened. She’d never seen these people before. “Girbar,” said the Madhubal, “we have come to take you with us to the sky.” Girbar did not wish to go with the Madhubal, but she had no choice. For she was only one and they were many. They had special powers. They were spirits, not humans. In the blink of an eye, they had taken Girbar back to their home in the sky. “We’ve brought you here for these three things,” they told her. They gave her three food crops: dhamuway, dhowpay and guru. “Go back now, and take these with you,” they said. Then the Madhubal became invisible and Girbar could no longer see them. The people of Saibai watched and waited for Girbar for many days. At last, they saw her returning from the sky. She climbed down a coconut palm shaped like a cross at a place called Bagunangulaynga (Bar-goonar-nyoo-lai ngar).

In her arms, she had banana, taro and sugar cane, none of which had ever grown on Saibai Island before. She came as a messenger with stories about the seasons – how and when to plant the foods according to the stars and tides. People planted the gifts and prepared to sing and dance with the Madhubal. They danced so the rains would come and their new crops would flourish and spread across the land. Carrying long sticks, they beat the surface of the water, strengthening the power of the rain spirits and calling the rain towards their gardens. Still today, the Madhubal make the rain by singing and dancing in the clouds and Saibai Island rainmakers sing and dance with them. Glossary of terms mag: waterhole drought: very little water kusul : coconut shell water containers blink of an eye: very quickly dhamuway : root of a banana plant dhowpay : taro, a herb guru : sugar cane flourish: grow well
