The NSW Government is upgrading Cabarita Wharf and interchange as part of the Transport Access Program. Following feedback from the community, the Review of Environmental Factors for the project has been prepared and will be on display for community feedback from Monday 13 November to Monday 4 December 2017.

BackgroundTransport for NSW is improving Sydney’s ferry services for customers. New and upgraded wharves are being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program. This program has most recently delivered upgraded facilities at Meadowbank, McMahons Point, Chiswick and Cockatoo Island. Work is currently underway at Milsons Point and Birchgrove wharves.

The new Cabarita Wharf interchangeThe upgraded wharf is designed to provide customers with an improved public transport experience. The upgrade would provide:

• capacity for additional ferry services

• protection from the wind, rain and sun

• improved seating and waiting areas

• improved safety for customers

• quicker and more efficient ferry boarding and disembarking

• effective wayfinding signage and lighting

• improved pedestrian, bus and vehicle access and movement around the interchange.

The upgrade would reuse the existing jetty and covered area. A new jetty would be built and connected to a new floating pontoon by a new gangway. Cover would be provided on all new sections of the wharf.

The pontoon would have two berthing areas allowing two ferries to access the wharf at the same time.

Next steps and what to expect during the upgradeConstruction is expected to start in early 2018 following consideration of all feedback received and approval of the final plans. Work to upgrade the wharf will take about six months to complete, weather and maritime conditions permitting.

It is expected that:

• modifications would be made to the existing wharf allowing ferries to operate during construction

• there would be changes to how customers access the wharf at different stages of of construction

• bus services will continue to operate during construction

• some night and early morning work would be required when the water is at its calmest

• a temporary construction compound would be established on land

• some truck movements may be required for landside upgrade work.

Car park upgradeAs previously advised, plans are being prepared to upgrade the existing car park. However, the land surrounding the car park has been identified to be an area of Aboriginal heritage significance. Further consultation with Aboriginal groups will be carried out before displaying the Review of Environmental Factors for the car park upgrade.
