I-Introduction

Most important NDC Activities throughPTS Data Efficiency

knowledge exchange between the IDC andNDC-Comoros regarding Local seismic Dataconversion

NDC participation to the NPE2013 with theseismic technology, using references W1,W2, W3, provided by German NDC.

II- Comoros-Islands: Position

- Four principal islands, lying in a WNW–ESE line at the northern end of theMozambique Channel- Grand Comore (1148km2), hosting theactive “Karthala volcano” (rising up to2361 m .al)

- Moheli (211km2; 790m al.) , dated to2,2Ma

- Anjouan (424km2; 1595m al.) , dated to1.5 Ma

- And Mayotte (374 km2; 660m al.),.datedto ~5.4 Ma, which is in an advanced stageof erosion and subsidence, and isencircled by a barrier reef

Benefits

Accessing PTS Data and Products in awide range of Application:-Through Capacity Building System installation-From IDC Secure Website , for DataRequest (AutoDRM, Subscription, ..), ..

Knowledge Sustainability : IMS Dataand IDC Products-Weeks training Courses-Monthly NDC Analyst courses

Capacity of ‘Data –Products’ treatment andrelated issues Introduction, on Local, Regionaland Global seismic Events for its Characteristics.

This ability reveals its necessity during: -Visits

- Local Event:

- Clarifying Events to the Media and Providing information to Students and Professionals-Etc….

Cases of Natural Hazards among others in Comoro-Islands

Volcanic eruptions:Over these two last centuries, from 1808 toJanuary 13, 2007, Comoros recorded almost 28known volcanic eruptions from the active Volcano‘Karthala” in the biggest Island “Gde-Comore”,which were mostly Magmatic, Phreato-magmatic,Phreatic and Gas releases.

Infrasound Hazards:Phreato-magmatic eruptions, frequently reactingas explosive eruptions, may impact on Energyreleases into the atmosphere and likely causeInfrasound effects. In this regards, Karthalavolcano would be considered as logic Infrasound

Source.

Tsunami Effects:2004 Global and Indian ocean Sumatra Andamantsunami affected the four Comoro-Islands about 6to 7m run ups.

Seismic activities:Recent earthquakes ( February 17 and March 12,2014) are felt in ‘Anjouan’ Island and have beendriving people into panic.

etc.

April 2014 Landslide caused by heavy rain in Anjouan-Comoros

IV- PTS Data and Products usefulness, and Knowledge Exchange

1. Data analyses upgrading and comparison to REBs

Page 9: Comoros Subject-NDC workshop 2014

a- File: “Winsuds290” into “c: driver” or other driversb- Files Structure:

c:\winsuds290- bin- data- doc- etc- keys- lib

c- Place of Data-data must be saved in \winsuds290\data\Name file should be : YYYYMMDD*.dmx, YYYYMMDD and dmx are important, and (*) can be any combination of strings.

Ex: 20130201_003643_KA_904.dmx

d- ConversionInto “windows Dos prompt” :

- Run the script for February 01, 2013:\winsuds290\bin\convert2css.bat 2013 02 01

e.g. of files:

2. IDC Knowledge support and Exchange

Local Data (volcano activities) Conversion to CSS Format for NDC analyses purposes.

2.1. Process: (From Suds to GSE)

Page 10: Comoros Subject-NDC workshop 2014

7 from the 39 dmx format converted:

Only “gse” extension Files are copied into Opensuse and analyzed in “Geotool”

Page 11: Comoros Subject-NDC workshop 2014

Converted data into Geotool and Waveform Results are:

Unfiltered waveforms Filtered Waveforms

Page 12: Comoros Subject-NDC workshop 2014

3. Three month’s events assessment in vicinity of Comoro-Islands(Jan, Feb, Mar, 2014)

Based on the IDC Standard Event Lists 3 “SEL3”

German NDC information support

W1: Waveform detection lists of relevantIMS Primary and Auxiliary Seismic Stationsas provided by PTS

W2: NPE Supplementary information on“Identification of the waveform event inFRISIA”. The European- MediterraneanSeismology provided these parameters:

Date of Event: 2013/09/04Time: 01:33:30,6Lat: 53.3282Lon: 6.8277ML: 3.0

W3: NPE Support on the statement by thestate of FRISIA concerning the waveformevent:……………..

location

State: Netherlands

Page 16: Comoros Subject-NDC workshop 2014

Interpretation:

Netherlands raise the issue of susceptible Radionuclidefindings at IMS in Europe/Asia:

-Based on 04 Sep 2013 regional seismic events,-Local Magnitude for automatic Data recorded inEurope States are Roughly between “ML: 2 to 3”, wouldgive an idea regarding the aspect of these regionalevents.-Suspicious nuclear tests mostly generate ‘strong’Amplitude spectra , which is not the case with the‘vicinity of Groningen’ earthquake

-Furthermore, the RNMI concluded the absence of radioactive substances, while all nuclearfacilities in ‘FRISIA’ operated normally days before and after 4 Sep 2013.This key information emphasized our decision through the NPE2013 with the seismic facility.

VI-Conclusion

Numerous uses are progressively fulfilled through massive exploitation ofPTS Data and Products. This process takes action from targeting the purpose of using Data to itsusefulness results.

The case is palpable, mentioning the example of getting samples of localData through “Opensus” output into Geotool software. Even if appearing asbackground noises, but they are major to be taken into account if needed forproject applications like “RSTT”.

Combining global tools (Google earth, Excel, Geotool and others..) couldraise major Benefits regarding the use of PTS Data by increasing efficientdaily, weekly, monthly or even yearly event statistics at the NDC. And thenecessity of these statistics is to reinforce the aspect of Natural hazardawareness and early warning.

The NPE2013 remains one of the pertinent actions bringing NDCs,especially in developing countries, to participate scientifically andtechnologically to the treaty and have to play their role.

Page 18: Comoros Subject-NDC workshop 2014

VII-Suggestions:

To increase systematically the performance of NDCs and experts, important details should be improved:

Software need some updates, (e.g. Event location in Geotool: the name ofregions, towns and villages should be included in order for us Analysts tobe clear while presenting a case to people needing details during an event).that was the case during March 12 earthquake occurred and put peopleinto panic in Anjouan-Comoros “Slide n08”.

Further facilities may increase the pertinence of NDCs activities, likeintegrating SEISCOM, PMCC software as well, for infrasound analyses.

Small Islands like Comoros exposed to multiple hazards “Slide n07”needto be appropriated solely with the tools (SHI technology) for a betterNatural disaster management.

Radionuclide analyses should be also integrated
