Background

Central Plantation Services (CPS) of the PT. Central Alam Resources Lestari, is

the first company in Indonesia which core business is to provide applied research

based services to plantation industries. From its conception, CPS always believes

that sustainable and integrated management is the future of all plantations. CPS is

staffed with specialized professionals that have years of experiences working

with plantation crops. These, in turn, are supported with comprehensive facilities

with up-to-date equipment necessary for precision and accuracy. CPS aims to be-

come the first name that all planters seek when they need reliable and trustworthy

solutions to their plantation’s problem.

CPS station is located at Jl. HR Soebrantas No. 134 Panam

Pekanbaru in Riau Province. The station was established in No-

vember 2011. It has graduate staff specialists with years of

experiences from of Indonesia’s top research institutes. They are

supported by experienced assistants.

The comprehensive facilities at this station include specialised

laboratories for the analysis of plant tissue, soil, fertiliser, water

and waste water. It also has a pathology laboratory and an

insectary facilites for the production of bio-fungisides and other

materials.

Has five technical sections which carry out services based on research and provide advice in the following fields:

AGRONOMY - optimal crop management

BREEDING – Future programme in provide planting material

CROP PROTECTION - protection against pests and diseases

DATA - storage and data management

Environment—Wastes management system

Optimizing Fertiliser CPS provides advice on optimal methods of plantation crop management, particularly

fertiliser requirements, because manuring is usually the most expensive costs and has a major

influence on yield. Fields inspection monitors every

individual fields by making maesurements of crop

growth and collecting soil and leaf samples. The samples

are quickly analysed in the CPS laboratory. Based on the

analysis results, agronomists make prompt fertiliser

recommendations.

Fertiliser Recommendation System The accuracy of fertiliser recommendations is becoming more improtant as the cost of

fertiliser continues to rise. This system allows the fertiliser recommendations for

individual fields to be fine tuned according to the detailed site information collected,

including soil survey data and soil and leaf and rachis analysis results.

Early Warning System CPS entomologists provide advice for plantation compa-

nies on protection against crop pests, based on an

"Early Warning System" in which all fields are

continually monitored for the presence of pests.

The appropriate control measures recommended are

based on research by entomogists into the life cycles of

the individual pest.

Disease Control CPS provides crop diseases in the field. Any diseased

material is taken to the pathology laboratory at CPS

laboratory where the pathogen is quickly identifed,

and a quick remedial action is taken. As in pest

control, biological rather than chemical control is used

to control disease where possible. For Instance, re-

search found that an effective the specific antagonistic

fungus Trichoderma, successfully to controls white

root disease in rubber and Ganoderma in oil palm,

both of which are now the serious problems.

Production of Biopesticides Biological pesticides for both pest and disease

control are produced in the pathology laboratories of

Trichoderma spp, Cordyceps, Metarhizium and

Beauveria at Central Plantation Services, which

guarantees their viability.

Biological Control of Pests CPS have devised a series of measures aimed at

controlling pests at each stage of their development,

using an Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

approach, with the emphasis on biological control.

Chemical control of pests is rarely used. Pest

outbreaks in estates are generally infrequent and short

lived, indicating the success of the IPM system

employed.
