SOLAR
§ The Solar energy sector in Bangladesh has been growing in an exponential rate since 1996.
§ Around 650,000 households in rural Bangladesh purchased Solar home systems (SHS)
between 1996 to 2010.
§ Its popularity is mostly due to innovative financing scheme by NGOs like Grameen
Shakti and Rural Service Foundation making SHS affordable and within reach of rural
households.
§ The World Bank subsidises around 26 NGO engaged in SHS marketing throughout Rural
Bangladesh located outside grid electricity
§ Major financing is channelled through the leading non banking financial institution
Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL)
§ Despite the success of off grid solar electricity 63% of Bangladesh is still out of the
reach of grid electricity.
§ This draws a very promising future for off grid solar power solutions in Bangladesh.
§ The Largest of the 26 NGOs are Grameen Shakti and Rural Service Foundation both of
who are RAL’s major clients along with Rahimafrooz Renewable Ltd.
Industry Overview:
Solar
§ To cater to the solar energy sector RAL manufactures “Rahimafrooz Solar” brand of battery.
§ These are 12V, 30-130 Ah lead acid battery @10 hours.
§ RAL annually manufactures 26,000 units of Rahimafrooz Solar brand.
§ SHS application is booming throughout Bangladesh’s rural household growing at more than 30%.
§ RAL currently holds a total market share of over 60%.
E V
§ Electric tricycles have recently gained popularity in Bangladesh market due to its simple composition, ease of use and affordable price.
§ The EV population has grown over last few years, mostly in Semi urban and rural parts of Bangladesh due to growing demand of transportation.
§ Most of the EVs are made of components and batteries sourced from China. The current size of EV population requires a sizeable demand on storage power requirements, due to its dependency on electricity as fuel.
§ Realizing the available ‘replacement’ market RAL started manufacturing ‘Ulka’ Brand of battery applying tubular technology of 120-140 Ah @ 20 Hours.
§ With an average production capacity of 4,000 units Ulka was formally launched in March 2011.
EV Industry Overview:
VRLA
§ The liberalization of Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector began with small steps in 1989.
§ However significant changes in mobile services occurred in the late 1990s and the number of services in operation have subsequently grown exponentially.
§ Today the telecommunication sector is one of the biggest sectors in Bangladesh with 6 operators and over 76.43 million mobile subscribers as of June 2011.
§ The top three operators are Grameenphone Ltd (Telenor), Banglalink (Orascom Telecom Bangladesh Ltd) and Robi (Axiata Bangladesh Ltd.) respectively.
§ According to forecasts by the Regulatory Authority the sector is poised to increase mobile subscriptions to 194 million by 2015.
Industry Overview:
VRLA § With over 29,000 BTS towers
throughout Bangladesh there is an ever-increasing demand for VRLA batteries primarily used for BTS backup power.
§ Recognising the untapped “Replacement Market” RAL entered by manufacturing “Rahimafrooz VRLA” brand of AGM battery of 2V, 200-600 Ah @ 10 hours.
§ RAL is currently the sole market player that manufactures the AGM variety locally since market entry in 2010.
§ RAL currently holds 11% of the “Replacement Market”

Forklift
§ With the 3rd largest exporter of RMG globally as well as
thrust sectors like Pharmaceuticals and processed food,
requirement for forklift has been in the different Industries
and Export processing Zones since the mid 1990’s.
§ The initial forklifts were primarily diesel powered but as
these sectors matured and embraced global compliance the
diesel powered forklifts was replaced by traction batteries
§ Targeting the replacement market, RAL begun Manufacturing
‘Volta’ brand of Traction Batteries of 2V, 100-1200 Ah @ 5
hours.
