ROAD MARKING
Road marking
Road marking is very essential and found useful to channelize the
traffic. It also helps to warn the driver about the changes in
approaching road, junctions etc and thereby helps in avoiding the
accidents.
As per M.O.R.T.H. guidelines all the important roads like National
Highways and expressways should be marked with retro-reflective
paint which will give night visibility. This is achieved using
thermoplastic paint. As the name suggest, it is a temperature sensitive
paint and applied at certain temperature.
Paint
The paint is mainly made up of hydrocarbon resin, pigment for
colorization and glass spears for night visibility. The percentage of each
ingredient is governed by the MORTH Cl. No 803.3. We are
manufacturing the same quality paints (BRIGHTLINE).
Roll of drop on glass beads in road marking
This paint comes in powder form and melted on site in (kettles)
premelters at controlled temperature. This molten thermoplastic paint
is then transferred to marking machine for required marking on road.
While laying the paint on road , glass beads being heavier ,it settles
down in the paint and a thin layer of pigment and other ingredients
covers these glass beads .This results in no reflection when paint is
freshly laid.
To overcome this problem and to achieve immediate reflectivity from
day one of application, certain amount of glass beads are sprinkled on
hot paint. After some duration ( 15 to 20 days of application)these half
embedded ,sprinkled glass beads along with the skin of the paint
applied worn out by moving tires of vehicles and the added glass
17
beads gets exposed and starts reflecting. This reflection then lasts till
the life of the paint applied.
Methods of application adopted in India.
There are three methods generally used world wide
1. Screed box laying
2. Extrusion laying
3. Spray method
In India we use only first two methods to mark the roads with
thermoplastic paint.
Screed box laying: In this method molten thermoplastic paint is laid
through the opening of the screed box and width is restricted
between two carbide strips attached beneath the screed box. Here
flow of thermoplastic paint is under gravity and hence can be layed
at fixed speed depending upon the density and flow properties of
the paint.
In this method thickness of paint varies if the speed of laying varies
resulting in cracking of marking after some time. The lines marked
do not have sharp edges. Generally this method is useful for small
works and detail work like marking junction’s arrows, etc.
Extrusion method: In this type molten thermoplastic is extruded
through an opening (slit) using external force and ribbon of desired
thickness and width is formed near the opening. This ribbon when
comes in contact with the road surface stick up to it .The ribbon
formation is done at about 4 to 5 inches above the ground and is not
speed dependant hence uniform thickness with well defined sharp
edges marking is achieved. This is very fast method of application
and found very useful on new works.
We Vinayaka Structural Engineers Pvt. Ltd. are involved in
thermoplastic road marking since year 2001. Initially company
imported one semiautomatic self driven machine from TRANTEX USA
and seeing the difference in quality and output over hand push
traditional machines, imported fully automatic machine from BORUM
18
Industry A/S Denmark. This advance machine has proved us in many
projects and because of this machine it is become mandatory in all
NHAI project to use fully automatic machine for road marking.
Company has carried out projects in various parts of India. Recently
company has also completed one project in Nepal.
We have our own paint manufacturing facility at MIDC, Mahad, Dist.
Raigad, Maharashtra. Here we have installed fully automatic mixing
plant enabling us strict quality control and uniformity in production.
Present capacity of the plant is 25 MT /day which may be increased to
45 MT if required.
METHODOLOGY FOR APPLICATION OF
HOT APPLIED PAVEMENT MARKING
1.) PREPARATION OF MATERIAL: -
First material in 25 Kg packing from same batch nos. are separated from
the lot and loaded in the truck on which premelters are kept.
Premelters, which are indirect heating type thermoplastic controlled are
of capacity 1000kgs. Each is preheated to 60 degree and then one of the
Preheater is partially loaded. After heating, once the oil has reached a
temperature of 120 degree hydraulic agitation is started. Then
premelter is loaded to its full capacity that is 1000 kgs and heated to 240
degrees (heating oil temperature and 200 degrees material temp.) Now
second premelter is preheated to 60 degrees and partially filled with
material and same method is adopted to heat the material. The oil temp
and material temp. is maintained with the help of the thermostat, which
gives automatic cutoff for heating. This prevents the material from
overheating. This procedure initial load takes 45 min to 60 min. There
after for each next load premelter is filled with fresh material without
stopping agitation and to the quantity, which has taken out from the
premelter for marking. For every load after the first load 20 min. of time
required. Hence twin premelters, which are heated simultaneously, will
provide continuous supply of material/paint to the marking machine.
19
2.) PREMARKING: -
Premarking is done with the help of linedori by connecting the specific
points previously marked. This premarked line is then, followed by the
help of the guider attached to the machine and thermoplastic is laid in
required line and pattern.
3.) APPLICATION: -
Our machine is extrusion type and has a material capacity of 500kgs.
This machine has indirect heating facility for maintaining material
temperature. This material tank is preheated to 200 degree and only
then material is taken from premelter. Temperature in the material tank
is maintained by thermostat.
We undertake thermoplastic road marking as per the guidelines of
MOST and IRC 35.

We undertake mastic asphalt work of any size and various thicknesses.
We have infrastructure to carry out mastic asphalt with conventional
method as well as using advance machinery like automatic batch mix
plant, transit mixers to carry ready mastic mix in hot condition to site, fully
automatic variable width mastic paver finisher etc.
Conventional method:
Mastic asphalt is prepared in small capacity cookers (1MT to 1.5 MT
capacities).Feeding of metal, sand, calcite, bitumen etc. is done manually
with the help of pre-measured containers. This mix is cooked for 1.5 to 2
hrs in mechanically agitated cooker and then the ready mastic is
transported to laying site in small hand trolleys. This mastic so transported
is then floated manually with wooden floats in a width of 1mts to 1.5 Mts.
Laying `requirement.
We have 5 such cookers and sufficient skilled manpower to achieve a daily
output of about 600 Sqm of 40mm thickness laying.
Using advance machinery:
In year 2007 for our work of providing and laying mastic asphalt on
Eastern Expressway (client MMRDA, Mumbai) we have imported mastic
paver finisher and allied machinery from Europe.
This machinery is found to be very useful for large or medium size work
of mastic asphalt. The complete set of machinery consists of following
items.
Transit Mixers
These transit mixers are designed
for 10 MT mastic load carrying
capacity.These mixers are
manufactured at our Ahemadnager
.Here a cylindrical tank made of
special alloy is mounted on chassis
with tilting arrangement.
TOLL PLAZA MASTIC ASPHALT
TRANSIT MIXERS FOR MASTIC
24
Temperature of mastic is maintained in this cylindrical tank with oil
jacketed heating. Mastic is agitated with hydraulic agitator while moving
at very low rpm
Batch mix plant for mastic asphalt: This plant is manufactured here in
India using indigenous design and
spare parts available in local
market.
Plant is designed in such manner
that exact percentages of
ingredients are gathered in hot
condition in the temperature
maintained mixers and also to
ensure continue supply of mastic
to transit mixers.
Here two mixers having heating arrangement is fed alternately by a hoper
fitted with load cell to weigh the preheated dry mix Metal and sand etc.are
heated in specially designed dryer drum to temp.250 degree C and by
using insulated bucket conveyer fed to feeder hopper. Lime powder
(calcite) is separately fed to feeder hopper through calibrated screw
conveyer. This calcite is heated in calcite tank fitted at the starting of screw
conveyer. Bitumen is separately fed through jacketed pipeline and pump to a
reservoir of defined volume (as per the design mix) and from there
pumped to mixers. Achieved output of 120 MT in eight hrs.
Paver finisher:
This paver finisher is imported from Europe. This has hydrostatic variable
speed drive and variable laying width adjustment.
Thickness is adjusted by hydraulic cylinder. This cylinder is used to lower
or lift the paver to desired thickness. Calibrated scale is mounted on side of
the paver, where directly once can see the thickness being laid. It has an
adjustment to maintain the camber of the road. Thickness can be laid from
20 mm to 50 mm using this paver. Average laying speed is about 5
MASTIC BATCHING PLANT
25
km/Hr.in 5.5 Mts width. Infrared
heaters are provided on side of
the paver to seal the joints with
adjoining layer previously laid.
The ready mastic mix transported
by transit mixer to site is poured
in front of the paver finisher. A
distribution screw is mounted on
front side of the paver to
distribute the mastic to its full
width.
Once the mastic poured is spread to full width of the paver; and is started
to move in forward direction to lay the mastic uniformly and in desired
thickness.
Mastic when freshly laid is very
smooth in texture; hence antiskid
is required to avoid skidding of
vehicles.
Antiskid is carried out by
spreading metal size 8mm to 10
mm at the rate of 10 to 12 kg per
Sqm. On freshly laid mastic
which is still hot.
Spreading of size metal (chips) is done just behind the paver, manually or
by chip spreader.

A chain-link fence
(also referred to as
wire netting, chain-
wire fence, cyclone
fence or hurricane
fence) is usually
made from
galvanized or
LLDPE –coated steel
wire. The wires run
vertically and are
bent into a zig-zag pattern so that each "zig" hooks with the wire
immediately on one side and each "zag" with the wire immediately on the
other.
Chain link fencing is widely used as Access Prevention Fencing. Road
Fencing Links is used to prevent the unwanted access of animals, peoples
& vehicles in bounded area. This is most economical concept in modern
fencing. Angle iron posts, pipe posts or wooden poles containing chain
link fencing fabric can be easily installed and reinstalled, chain link fencing
fabric is a fencing material made of steel wire. We provide continuous
mesh without knots or ties except in the form of knocking or twisting the
ends of the wires to form the selvage of the fabric.
Applications:
* Highways & Express ways
* Stadiums
* Power stations
* Airports
* Industrial complexes
* Farm houses
* Zoological parks
* Orchards/ gardens etc.
* Standard dimensions for GI chain link fencing.
* Height: - 1 mtr- 4 mtr
* Width of frame: - 1- 2.5 mtrs.
R.O.W. FENCING
27
* Mesh: - 1", 1 ½", 2,", 2 ½", 3", 3 ½", 4", 4 ½", 5", 5 ½", 6"
* Nominal wire dia - 2 mm to 5 mm.
Chain link fence is most commonly available galvanized which is silver in
color. We also carry colored chain link fence fabric, framework (posts and
rail), colored fence fittings, gates (swing and slide), and gate hardware for
all fencing applications from standard residential to light commercial, to
heavy commercial and industrial fence applications. Colored fence fittings
and chain link framework (posts and rails) are either powder coated, or
coated in a heavy vinyl coated (PVC) material in standard colors such as
black, dark brown, and dark green. White is also available as special order
fencing. It is not uncommon to combine the two and stretch a vinyl coated
chain link fabric on a galvanized frame. All aluminum chain link fabric,
aluminum tubing, and aluminum chain link fittings and gates are also
available for special applications and is preferred by many near saltwater.
The popularity of chain-link fence is due to its relatively low cost and eases
of installation. A further advantage is that due to the open weave, chain-
link fences are transparent, and do not obscure sunlight from either side of
the fence. If a semi-opaque fence is desired, this can be achieved by the
insertion of slats into the mesh.
Available wire thickness:
We can provide fencing in thickness starting from 1.5mm to 6mm in G.I. /
P.V.C / M.S. / S.S.
Available Mesh sizes:
Starting from half inch to 6 inches, most popular sizes are 25mm, 40mm,
50mm, 55mm, 60mm, 65mm, and 75mm.
Available width:
Starting from 100mm to 4000mm (1ft. to 13ft.)
Available Length:
Normally fencing roll are supplied in 15 and 30 mts. length. We can supply
the roll as per individual requirement
Material: PVC coated iron wire, galvanized iron wire, stainless steel wire.
28
Installation
The installation of chain-link fence involves setting posts into the ground
and attaching the fence to them. The posts may comprise steel tubing,
timber or concrete and may be driven into the ground or set in concrete.
End posts, or terminal posts, must either be set in concrete or anchored to
prevent leaning under the tension of a stretched fence. After the end posts
are set, line posts are driven in equally spaced at intervals of 2.5-3.0m. The
fence is then attached at one end, stretched, and attached at the other; the
excess being easily removed by "unscrewing" a wire. Finally it is tied to the
line posts with aluminum wire.
