STARTING ASSUMPTIONS

Tingkat kebebasan pers (the Press Freedom Index) dihitung oleh Reporters Without Borders (RSF)

berdasar penilaian terhadap tujuh indikator. Ditentukan sebagai variabel x.

GDP is the total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year,

keseluruhan nilai pasar dari produk barang dan jasa yang dihasilkan di dalam suatu negara pada

tahun tertentu. Ditentukan sebagai variabel y.

Each question in the questionnaire is linked to one

of the six following indicators:

1 / Pluralism [indicator scorePlur]

Measures the degree to which opinions are

represented in the media.

2/ Media independence [indicator scoreInd]

Measures the degree to which the media are able

to function independently of sources of political,

governmental, business and religious power and

influence.

3/ Environment and self-

censorship [indicator scoreEA]

Analyses the environment in which news and

information providers operate.

4/ Legislative framework [indicator scoreCL]

Measures the impact of the legislative

framework governing news and information

activities.

5/ Transparency [indicator scoreTra]

Measures the transparency of the institutions

and procedures that affect the production of

news and information.

KEBEBASAN PERS (PRESS FREEDOM)

The degree of freedom available to journalists in 180 countries is determined by pooling the responses

of experts to a questionnaire devised by RSF.

6/ Infrastructure [indicator scoreInf]

Measures the quality of the infrastructure that

supports the production of news and information.

A seventh indicator based on data gathered about

abuses and acts of violence against journalists and

media during the period evaluated is also factored

into the calculation.

7/ Abuses [indicator scoreExa]

Measures the level of abuses and violence.

The press freedom map offers a visual

overview of the scores of all the countries in

the index.

From 0 to 15 points: Good

From 15.01 to 25 points: Fairly good

From 25.01 to 35 points: Problematic

From 35.01 to 55 points: Bad

From 55.01 to 100 points: Very bad

GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP)

GDP is the total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year.

Each country reports its data in its own currency. To compare the data, each country's statistics must

be converted into a common currency. Two methods are used for conversion, nominal and

purchasing power parity (PPP).

▪ Data nominal dikonversi menjadi data rasio dengan skala 0 s.d 100

Peneliti menduga bahwa semakin tinggi angka kebebasan pers di suatu negara akan

berbanding positif dengan tingginya angka GDP nominal yang dimilikinya. Negara yang

bebas seharusnya menjadikan warganya dapat lebih bebas berusaha, sehingga meningkatkan

pendapatan mereka meningkat. Namun, benarkah adanya hubungan tersebut?

Interpretasinya, hubungan antara variabel x dan y sangat rendah dan bahkan tidak

berkorelasi (no linear relationship).

Untuk menentukan kesimpulan dengan signifikansi, maka ditentukan terlebih dahulu:

Taraf signifikansi, sebesar 5%, berarti peneliti bersedia menanggung resiko meleset sebesar 5%.

Apabila nilai r-empiris sama atau lebih besar dari nilai r-kritis, maka korelasi tersebut signifikan.

Sebaliknya, apabila r-empiris di bawah harga r-kritis, maka korelasi tersebut tidak signifikan.

Jika pada taraf signifikansi 1% r empiris signifikan, maka pada taraf signifikansi 5% pasti signifikan

pula. Namun, jika r empiris signifikan pada 5%, belum tentu signifikan pada 1%. (Muhammad Idrus, Metode Penelitian Ilmu Sosial: Pendekatan Kualitatif dan Kuantitatif, Edisi 2 (Jakarta: Erlangga, 2009), 172).

Taraf signifikansi yang diambil dalam

penelitian sosial biasanya 5%. Artinya,

peneliti mengambil resiko 5% dari

generalisasi (kesimpulan) yang

dilakukannya meleset.

Berarti, r empiris < r kritis, korelasi antar variabel dalam penelitian ini tidak signifikan.

Tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara tingkat kebebasan pers dengan indeks GDP

di suatu negara.

Jadi, kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah:

nya.
