T h e r e are a l s ov a r y i n g i d e a s a b o u t t h e o p t i m u m t i m e t ov a c c i n a t e b a b i e s , some s t u d i e s s u g g e s t i n gt h a t l a t e v a c c i n a t i o n c o n f e r s a high d e g r e e o fp r o t e c t i o n . T h i s p r o s p e c t i v e c o n t r o l i e d s t u d yh a s b e e n u n d e r t a k e n t o e v a l u a t e t he v a l u e o fBCG v a c c i n e g i v e n t o b a b i e s d u r i n g t h e i r f i r s tt h r e e d a y s o f l i f e ver s u s i t s v a l u e when g i v e ni n t h e i r t h i r d m o n t h o f l i f e . E v a l u a t i o n wasm e a s u r e d b y t h e r e s u l t s o f t e s t s w i t h p u r i f i e dp r o t e i n d e r i v a t i v e ( P P D ) , b y v a c c i n e scars,a n d b y t h e c o m p l i c a t i o n s o f t he v a c c i ne . I twas f o u n d t h a t BCG g i v e n a t t h e e n d o f t h et h i r d m o n t h p r o v i d e s a h i g h e r r a t e o f r e s p o n s ea n d f e w e r c o m p l i c a t i o n s t h a n when g i v e nd u r i n g t h e f i r s t t h r e e d a y s o f l i f e .BCG p l a y s a s i g n i f i c a n t p a r t i n p r o t e c t i o na g a i n s t t u b e r c u l o s i s , w h i c h i s o n e o f t h e m o s ti m p o r t a n t p r o b l e m s i n d e v e l o p i n g c o u n t r i e s .N e v e r t h e l e s s , t h e p r o t e c t i v e e f f e c t o f v a c c i n er e m a i n s a h i g h l y c o n t r o v e r s i a l s u b j e c t , a n d h a sb e e n r e p o r t e d t o range f r o m 80% t o l e s s t h a n5 % .
