Comparison of Hyperpolarized 3He and 129XeMR Imaging in Cystic Fibrosis Patients
▪ Usage of hyperpolarized 3He is not economicallyfeasible because of its unavailability and high price.
▪ We are now motivated to shift towards the use ofcheaper and naturally available 129Xe.
To compare hyperpolarized 3He and 129Xe in patients with cystic fibrosis lung disease by direct voxel-wise correlations and
ventilation defect percentages

Overall Fitted lineFitted for GREFitted for True FISP
➢On average, VDP was higher in 129Xe scans (33.8% ± 8.3% for 129Xe vs 30.91% ± 5.47% for3He), likely due to the much lower diffusion coefficient of Xenon vs Helium.
➢Although the VDP is higher for 129Xe, the scatter plot (above) shows the similarity betweenthe two gas distributions in all subjects (overall R2 = 0.70, slope= 1.27).
