Mud Lake adjoins the east most edge of the compartment. The primary focus of wildlife habitat management will be to address the habitat requirements identified for the listed featured species found in this compartment. These species include ruffed grouse, black bear, and white-tailed deer. Based on the selected featured species, some of the most significant wildlife management issues in the management area are the maintenance of young forest, the retention of large, over-mature trees and snags and the maintenance and expansion of hard mast and mesic conifer components. Surface sediments consist of lacustrine sand and gravel and minor dune sand. The glacial drift thickness varies between 0 and 30 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Devonian Traverse Group. The Traverse is quarried for clay/shale and limestone/cement products four miles to the northeast. There may be potential for additional limestone production in this area. A gravel pit is located in Section 30, but potential may be limited. This area has had no drilling for oil and gas. The Antrim Shale is not present in this area and production is unlikely. There are no State oil and gas leases in the area. This is limited, gated access from Norway Ridge Truck Trail. None. Norway Ridge Pathway is perhaps the most heavily used non-motorized trail in the Atlanta Unit. Revision Date: 2015-06-18 Stand Examiner: Richard Barber 06/29/2015 8:32:57 AM - Page 1 of 2 RUBLEYM1

Forest Recreation and protection of ERA's.

Often wet and stagnant, with many irregularly shaped forested dunes rising from the lowlands. Soil textures are sand and muck.

The City of Alpena lies barely a mile to the east. From stand 60 suburban Alpena can be seen across Mud Lake. Land to the south and west is residential and other state land. To the north one finds the M-32 commercial and light industrial corridor.

One or more features have been listed. Also, several ERA’s exist in or adjacent to this compartment.

None reported.

This is part of the Devil’s Lake Block Plan.

Ecological Reference Areas (ERAs) are high quality examples of natural communities that have been identified as Element Occurrences (EOs) by the Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) within the context of their natural community classification system. Element Occurrences with viability ranks of A (Excellent) or B (Good) and a Global (G) or State (S) element (rarity) ranking of endangered (1), threatened (2), or rare (3) serve as an initial base of ERAs. They may be located upon any ownership in the State. The system is comprised of individual or associations of natural community types that are managed for restoration and maintenance of natural ecological processes and values. The public may submit recommendations for lands as ERAs using the DNR Conservation Area Recommendation Form.
