Jane Eckerts galleryin Millerton, NY, has twoexhibits together: Onefrom the late 19th andearly 20th centuries; theother from the second half of the 20th century. Andit works, probably becausethe pieces are so good.

In the gallerys frontwindow is Benjamin Egg-lestons Moonrise at OldLyme. The soft, gentlepicture is tonal in style,with a muted palette andno strong colors. A greatertonal painter, George In-ness, is represented withNear Montclair, anexample of the more mys-tical, abstract, personal

work he produced aftersettling in the New Jerseytown for the nal nineyears of his life.

The most expensive pic-ture in the show (high sixgures retail) is a wonder-ful, meticulously paintedsteamship, the eventuallyill-fated Brother Jona-than by James Bard. Theartist caught every detailof the New York Harborships he painted, andhe placed them in styl-ized, somewhat primitive,windswept waves withcolorful pennants andags ying. The picturehas been owned previous-ly by the Vanderbilt fam-

ily and even the GriswoldInn in Essex, CT.

Two charming cowpaintings hang near each

other. Thomas Craigs issmall and good, JamesMcDougal Harts, largerand better. And a fas-cinating work, TheWood Chop, is by LeviWells Prentice and fromhis early years before hebegan creating his famousstill lifes of fruit and cor-nucopias.

The oil is of a barn withslanting roof and a wood-chopping gure nearby,both seen from afar. Theplay of light is masterfulin the hands of this self-

taught artist.Among the modern

works, a marvelous RobertRauschenberg artists print

of a fabric collage seri-graph, Why You CantTell, compels in unusualshades of green and or-ange with collaged imagesof horses and a bird. ALarry Rivers lithographfor the Bronx Zoo is alivewith animals both realisticand fanciful.

Much in the TriArts production hews to theoriginal Broadway production: Scenery is minimal,but effective in the competent hands of Erik DDiaz; costumes by Michelle Eden Humphrey are

spot-on. But it is the direction and choreographyof Jennifer Werner and the energy of her cast of principals that bring the show to vivid, often side-splitting life. (Werner has big shoes to ll, sinceMike Nichols directed the original show on Broad-way.)

Thomas Cannizzaro, an Equity professional,makes a big-voiced, clueless king. Bethany Fagan,the Lady of the Lake, recently graduated from New

York University, is so sensational that she couldsteal the show if she were not such a gracious col-league.

Harrison Post, is the bent-over, faithful servantof King Arthur, who clicks together castanet-likewooden pieces to simulate the sound of horseshooves and who gives a touching rendition of Al-ways Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Kenny Francoeur is a charming Prince Herbert,

who would rather be a princess; Stephen Eckle-mann makes the Black Knights dismembermentexcruciatingly funny, while Mark Devey, IndianMountains head of school, dons a very black, verycurly, very greasy-looking wig to play Sir Bedevere.

Especially good are Jared Weiss, the Roger inTriArts Rent two summers ago, as the cowardlySir Robin, who swishes his blonde wig, runs fromdanger and sings two killer songs; and BrandonCordeiro as Sir Lancelot and several other char-acters demanding accents that he delivers withaplomb. He is indefatigable.

Werners choreography is energetic, imaginative,foot-stomping. Youll see lampoons of Jerome Rob-bins, Bob Fosse and others in her dances. Only inthe all-female numbers do her efforts not pay off.

Erik Kang is the enormously talented musicaldirector, who TriArts might want to chain to hispost for years to come. His nine-member, offstageorchestra plays brilliantly.

Spamalot is a terric start to the TriArts sea-son. You will have a good time if you have anysense of humor; and if you dont, go anyway to tryand nd one.

Compagnie Kg, the hugely popular Frenchhip-hop group, returned to Jacobs Pillowlast week with a repeat of the sold-out pro-gram it presented last year. Choreographer

Mourad Merzouki collaborated with Brazilian troupeCompanhia Urbana de Dana. Merzoukis backgroundin circus and martial arts blend with Brazilian capoe-ira and samba rhythms, all mixed with a sinuous hip

hop that would look at home on a streetcorner in theBronx.

Correira, the rst of two pieces on the program,means running in Portuguese. The dancers start outon their backs, their legs churning as they sing quietly.The image of running feet returns repeatedly, mostamusingly when the dancers hold metal legs that looka bit like golf putters wearing shiny black shoes andmix them among their own fast-moving feet. Thrill-

ing acrobatic moments abound. But there are quietmoments too, one man seems anxious or fearful andanother enfolds him in an embrace.

The score, by ASN, collects everything frommeditative North African strings, to scratchy insectsounds, to opera and Chaplinesque movie music. Thedancers breath and the squeak of their sneakers blendwith the instruments to enrich the auditory mix.

AGWA is even more showstopping excitement.

The stage is strewn with plastic water tumblers, whichreect and refract the light. Stacked, they wave in theair like light sabres. Thrown, they are sparkly confetti.And lled with water and held carefully, they areevocative of so many things: waters scarcity, its im-portance to these incredible athletes who have beenworking all-out for 30 minutes or more. The dancersarrange and rearrange them, sometimes inching acrossthe stage on their bellies to place them just so. At onepoint, the cups are in rows, ickering like votives, anda dancer backips all the way across the stage, handsand feet landing perfectly spaced between the rows sonot a cup is touched. In a joyous encore, each dancershows off his signature moves as the audience stampsand roars. Street dance meets concert dance showsdance is alive, vital and for everyone.
