New Weight-Loss Pilot Program In the WorksBecause Compass Rose Health Plan cares about your health, we recently launched a pilot program that helps members manage their weight and live a healthier, more active lifestyle. This online, year-long program is called Virtual Lifestyle Management (VLM) and is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program developed at the University of Pittsburgh.

A select group of Compass Rose Health Plan participants access their personal site and complete 16 weekly lessons, followed by 8 monthly lessons. These lessons help members learn to manage their food intake and find fun, easy ways to increase their activity. The VLM application helps track food and fat calories, and weight and activity changes over time, allowing them to monitor their progress toward meeting their personal goals. In addition, the participants are assigned a specially trained coach who monitors their progress and is available to answer questions, help solve problems and provide encouragement via secured email.

Response to the pilot program has been tremendous, and we quickly filled our allotted 150 spots. We will monitor the overall program results and hope to consider expanding the program early next year.

An old Irish proverb says, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.”

We don’t have any good jokes at the moment, so we’ll just focus on helping you get a better night’s rest. Studies have shown that better sleep can help improve your memory, ease inflammation, lower stress and even lose weight. So here are some tips for better sleep and a better lifestyle.

1. Relax: Whether physical or mental, stress is the enemy of sleep and can leave you lying awake at night for hours. Before bed, put your mind – and body – at ease. Meditation, breathing exercises or just sitting down and taking a deep breath can help you relax before bed.

2. The bed is for sleep, the couch is for reading and TV: Many of us read in bed before turning out the light, but over time this can lead to your brain associating the bed more with other activities and less with sleep. If you’ve got pre-sleep activities, try to keep them to other rooms so that your mind only associates the bed with counting sheep.

3. Counting sheep: Speaking of counting sheep, try … counting sheep. When you lie awake thinking about how much you want to sleep, that actually prevents you from sleeping. By shifting your mind to something else, you can relax (see number 1) and drift off to sleep.

4. Cut the caffeine: Many of us need caffeine in the morning to wake up and keep us going all day. Nothing wrong with that, but keep the caffeine kick to the morning ONLY. If a cup of coffee at 8:30 a.m. can keep you going until 3 p.m., then how long do you think that can of soda at 7 p.m. is going to last you? Try to avoid caffeine after 2 p.m. to promote a good night’s rest.

5. Cut out the butts: Aside from the other health factors associated with cigarettes, smoking can also be keeping you awake. We know that nicotine is the key ingredient in cigarettes – it’s also a stimulant. Avoid cigarettes for one to two hours before bed. If you want to quit altogether, check out CRBG’s Smoking Cessation Benefit Program on page 8.

Nine Tips for Healthier Fast Food MealsEvery day, one in four Americans eats fast food. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, that means that more than 78 million Americans consume some type of fast food daily. No wonder the U.S. is referred to as “fast food nation!”

Fast food restaurants thrive in the U.S. because they are convenient and affordable. If you are eating out, a fast food restaurant is often the cheapest option, but not usually the healthiest one. Just one fast food meal packs enough calories, sodium, and fat for a whole day! Here are some tips for healthy eating at fast food restaurants:

•Makecarefulmenuselections. Pay attention to the descriptions on the menu. Instead of ordering meals labeled deep-fried, breaded, creamy or crisp, order meals offering leaner meats and more vegetables.

•Drinkwaterwithyourmeal. Ditch the high calorie soda for tea or water. To add a little flavor to your tea or water, try adding a lemon.

•“Undress”yourfood. Control how many additional calories you add to your meal by ordering the condiments “on the side.” Many salad dressings, spreads, and cheeses contain more calories and fat than you might think!

•Don’tbeafraidtospecialorder. Know that you can always change how your food is prepared on the menu. If the menu specifies that your food is fried, don’t feel bad asking for it to be broiled or steamed instead.

•Watchyoursalt. Most fast food already contains a lot of sodium. Don’t add insult to injury by adding more salt.

•Avoidbuffets... Yes, even seemingly healthy ones like salad bars. There is already an obesity epidemic in the U.S. – think before you overeat to justify getting your money’s worth.

•Rememberthebigpicture. Moderation is always the key. If you know you are going out to eat later that day, choose smaller portions throughout the day. Planning ahead can help you relax and enjoy your dining out experience while maintaining good nutrition and diet control.

So, next time you visit your favorite fast food restaurant, try and remember some of these helpful tips! You can also locate healthy fast food options by visiting www.HealthyDiningFinder.com.

HEALTH TIPS

Avoiding Lyme Disease and West Nile VirusWith summer here, you’re bound to spend more time enjoying the great outdoors — but so is someone else. This is the most active time of the year for ticks and mosquitoes and the diseases that they can often carry. Two diseases are of particular concern at this time of year: Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

SOURCES: http://www.wbur.org/2012/06/28/lyme-prevalence http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/ http://www.cdc.gov/westnile

WestNilevirus: After several years of declining incidence, West Nile is on the rise again with almost 6,000 cases last year. Unlike Lyme disease, West Nile virus is found nationwide.

PREVENTION: West Nile virus is almost exclusively transmitted by mosquito bites, so like Lyme Disease, the easiest prevention method is to use insect repellant. Also remember to regularly empty any buckets, gutters and birdbaths with standing water where mosquitoes tend to breed.

SYMPTOMS: The good news is that 80% of those infected with the disease will not develop any symptoms. About 19% will develop a fever with flu-like symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, despite occurring in summer when flu is uncommon. The remaining 1% often suffer from neurological conditions including encephalitis and meningitis. People older than 60 are at the greatest risk for these symptoms, along with those suffering from cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and people who have received organ transplants.

LymeDisease:With about 16,000 infections every year, many believe that infection is unlikely, but public health officials say that is a mistake. The disease is primarily found in the northeast and upper Midwest. It is unlikely, but still possible to acquire it in the Southeast, lower Midwest and Pacific Coast of the United States.

PREVENTION: This is the easy part. Lyme Disease is only transmitted by bites from infected ticks, so the easiest way to prevent acquiring the disease is to prevent being bitten. Avoid high grass, leaf litter or wooded areas where ticks are most likely to be found.

If you cannot avoid that, wear long sleeves or pants or, if it is too hot to wear long clothes, apply insect repellant to any exposed skin. To maximize protection, use a repellent that contains at least 20% DEET.

Check yourself and your pets for ticks when you come indoors. Be sure to check under your arms, behind your knees, in and around your ears, in your belly button, and most importantly, in your hair. Also shower to expose any ticks, and help remove them. If you do find a tick already biting you, use a pair of tweezers to grab the tick as close to its mouth as possible. Steadily pull, but don’t twist, the tweezers up to remove it from your body. Clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol or soap and hot water.

SYMPTOMS: If you have to remove a tick, be on the lookout for symptoms of infection. The most common symptom is a red rash similar to a bull’s-eye. However, other symptoms include severe headaches and neck stiffness due to meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord), and pain and swelling in the major joints, such as your shoulders, knees or elbows. If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor promptly to get tested for Lyme.

A Pharmacist’s Perspective: What Every Man Should Know About Osteoporosis

How many people do you know that have been hospitalized after falling and breaking a bone? Unfortunately, most of us can name at least a few relatives or friends that have been in this situation.

Often, these broken bones are a result of low bone-density – also known as osteoporosis. At some point in their lives, about half of all women and a fourth of men older than 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis, and while men have a lower overall risk, there are some important things men should know about preventing osteoporosis.

Good news/bad news: First, the good news. Since men tend to have larger bones to start with, this can delay or altogether prevent bone loss to the point of breakage. The bad news is that the risk is still far from zero. In fact, men over 50 are more likely to break a bone due to osteoporosis than to develop prostate cancer. Also, bone fractures in men tend to occur later in life than in women, making them more difficult to treat and less likely to fully recover.

Risk: As in women, the factors that determine if men are more prone to osteoporosis are driven by a variety of factors, including family history, exercise level, alcohol intake, and smoking history. Hormone levels, and medications or other health problems can also lower bone density. Men can’t change all of these factors, but as with many diseases, the daily decisions men make on food intake and activities can lower or raise osteoporosis risk.

Prevention – Calcium and Vitamin D: Calcium and vitamin D are essential to building and maintaining bone density. Try to get your daily calcium needs from your diet and use supplements only if truly necessary. The necessary daily calcium and vitamin D intake for men increases with age, leveling off at age 70, when men should get 1,200 mg of calcium and at least 800 units of vitamin D per day.

Eating calcium-rich foods like dairy products and green leafy vegetables is a great start to lowering osteoporosis risk. Men can limit fat intake from dairy products by choosing skim milk or low fat products, which contain the same amount

of calcium as their regular fat counterparts. But one very important note: If you take a blood thinner like Coumadin (warfarin), do not make changes to your diet without

consulting with your physician.

If you do opt for a calcium supplement, keep in mind your prescription medications, especially if you are treating

heartburn or acid reflux with proton pump inhibitors (PPI), such as Prilosec (omeprazole), Prevacid

(lansoprazole), or Nexium (esomeprazole). Because PPIs block stomach acid, calcium citrate might be better absorbed compared with other types of calcium supplements, as calcium citrate does not require stomach acid to be absorbed. If you take a different type of calcium supplement, like calcium carbonate, take it with a meal or snack. Your body produces stomach acid when you eat.

Prevention – Weight-bearing Exercise: The other essential component to healthy bones is weight bearing/muscle strengthening exercise. This should be done 30 minutes a day most days of the week. Activities such as weight-lifting, hiking, jogging, brisk walking, and racquet sports all place “good stress” on bones, promoting bone-building and strengthening. Also try drinking fewer than two alcoholic beverages a day and not smoking to decrease your risk of osteoporosis.

To sum it up: You can’t feel your bones getting weaker and, unfortunately, often the first sign of osteoporosis is a broken bone. Therefore, prevention is the key to lowering your risk for suffering a debilitating bone fracture.

Work with your doctor to determine your individual risk for osteoporosis. Engage in bone-strengthening activities, get proper amounts of calcium and vitamin D, and if your doctor does determine that you have osteoporosis, he or she might prescribe a medication to help the body increase bone density.

Work with your pharmacist to ensure that you are taking your medication properly. Following these steps will help lower your chances of being one of the 80,000 men per year that will break a hip.

Have a SPLASH This Summer! If you were to ask yourself what the scariest thing you could encounter at the beach, you might find yourself saying, “Shark!”

Despite common belief, shark attacks fall toward the bottom of potential dangers one could encounter at the beach. Just a handful of people are killed each year by sharks, but an average of 3,306 people drown every year. According to the National Weather Service’s Web site, rip currents account for more than 100 deaths each year – far more than the one fatal shark attack recorded yearly.

Rip currents are defined by narrow, rip-like currents that form after waves break on the beach – they move both quickly and perpendicularly away from the shoreline. While rip currents vary in size and speed, they’re commonly measured between 10 and 20 feet wide, exceeding speeds of 5 miles per hour.

As stated by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) an estimated 80% of all ocean rescues are caused by rip currents. Unfortunately, rip currents aren’t as easy to spot as a shark might be. So any time you arrive at a beach – whether familiar or not with the location – always be mindful of flags and signs that might alert beachgoers of unsafe swimming conditions.

Telltale Signs for Spotting Rip Currents:• Changes in water color (murkier; darker water, cause by seaweed and sediments)

• Choppy, “agitated” water

• Floating objects appear to be moving further out to sea

• Water temperatures are noticeably colder than surrounding water

Escaping a Rip Current:• Don’t panic!! Save your energy and think clearly.

• Don’t swim against the current towards shore – swim parallel to the beach.

• If you are pulled with the current, calmly float until you escape the current’s pull, then swim diagonally back to shore.

If you’re planning a family vacation or simply packing up the car for a beach-day, always be sure to check ocean conditions – knowing ahead of time could alleviate feelings of worry or stress. As always, whether you’re poolside or at the beach, remember to wear sunblock, drink plenty of water, and take breaks to avoid dehydration and over-exhaustion while enjoying the summer sun!!

Young Voices, Big Inspiration – Operation Purple On October 17th, Compass Rose Charities (CRC) will host its 4th Annual Golf Invitational and Charity Auction at Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland.

Last year’s event – which raised more than $85,000 for Companions for Heroes (C4H) – succeeded thanks to the generosity of all those that attended, auction winners and the courage of Founder David Sharpe and veterans alike, who shared their personal stories with guests. With this year’s event fast approaching, CRC is proud to announce the 2013 Charity of Choice.

Operation Purple: Since 2004 this program has provided a free week of summer camp to 45,000 military children and teens, including a retreat with their parents who have been, are currently, or will be deployed. Dedicated to helping military families, Operation Purple created three programs to help with deployment, reintegration, and coming together after injury. The organization recognizes the importance of our nation’s service members, and helps ease the significant impact that deployment can have on military families.

As CRC and Operation Purple come together this fall, our hope is to bring more joy and summer fun to military children and their families that demonstrate remarkable strength during challenging times. Learn more at www.compassrosecharities.org.
