Interior design colours, like fashions, alternates from season to season and sees an introduction of ‘hot’ new colours each year. The credit crunch and falling house prices is expected to have a huge impact on the way people decorate their homes in 2009. With people opting to stay put rather than try to move the bland beiges which ‘sell’ houses is being replaced with a mixture of bright and warming colours. Dulux is introducing a new paint range with ‘sunny yellows and mystical violets’ to inject colour back into peoples homes.

The emphasis this year is to make your home as comfortable and cosy as possible-as home is where many people will be spending their time as they can ill afford nights out of expensive entertainment. Sitting rooms are the focal points in homes. New flat screen TVs and home entertainment systems is where the money is being spent as people prepare themselves for a new way of living. The style of interiors is also in keeping with the

economical downturn. With the new injections of colour it is now fashionable to mix and match old trends alongside the new. Having pieces of antique furniture in the same room as less expensive Ikea furniture is going to be acceptable. In the same way a mix of display objects is also going to fit this new style of interiors. It will be very acceptable to browse junk shops and car boot sales to find pieces for the home which simply appeal and place them right next to genuine antiques to provide an upbeat look. One of the main features this year is the emphasis on ‘no clutter’. Rooms can be full of contrasting colours and designs as long as there is a sense of harmony and deliberate order. Patterns and contrasting textiles are also going to be very acceptable this year.Re-decorating with new colours will undoubtedly bring the dilemma of having existing soft furnishings and curtains in the ‘wrong’ colour-this is where shopping at fabric warehouses for discount fabrics to make new window dressings and cushion covers will come in to its own. With the acceptability on not having to have ev-erything made by the top designers sitting rooms can quite literally be transformed in a weekend. Cushions and throws can effectively be used to re-vamp a sofa and chairs, while stylish ready made curtains can be brought at incredibly low prices-particularly during the January sales.Plain coloured or white walls are ideal if you want to add bold patterns and textures to furnishings and window dressings. 2009 is the time for individual experimentation. The old adages ‘home is where the heart is’ and ‘home sweet home’ will be prominent as people close themselves of from the outside world and cocoon themselves away from the doom and gloom of the failing economy. The minimalist look with bold patterns, bright colours and bargains is what interior designs in 2009 will be all about. Visiting a fabric warehouse in the high street or online has never been so fashionable!

With so many designer colors to choose from, it seems ironic that white is making its way back into some of today’s most admired rooms. There is an unrelenting calmness about white that seems to work in just about any home. I love the sophistication that white on white has to offer and it can be absolutely beautiful if you give the proper attention to detail. One of the greatest attributes of white is that it will never overpower a room, and choosing the right details (which is definitely the key) will add incredible interest to your room.

As most of us have probably already discovered, there are many different shades of white, so it is important to distinguish between them in order to make the best choice for your home. Choosing the wrong white can create an unflattering environment in even some of the most beautiful homes. When comparing whites, remember that warm whites have yellow undertones; cool whites have blue undertones and pure whites have no undertone. In a white room, sunlight also plays an mportant factor. A blue sky casts cool shades in a room, clouds make the room pale gray and trees make the room appear green. White rooms bounce light so less is needed to make the room seem bright. Incandescent light makes a white room warm, while fluorescent tends to feel more commercial and probably a little sterile. It is a good idea to avoid using all cool whites in your home. Lighting affects any room, but it is much more obvious in a white room.

The use of white in interiors implies order and clarity. While white rooms still may seem a bit clinical to some, others view them as being stylish and intriguing, perhaps somewhat vogue. Actually when you think about it, there’s nothing better than being able to start out with a fresh palette. The possibilities to accessorize are endless. But

because everything is so visible, white rooms still demand discipline, so simplicity is really the key. Another advantage of using white in your home is that it can be extremely versatile when mixing two decorating styles together. You can explore many options for mixing and matching. You can make it traditional, modern, rustic or romantic, depending entirely on the shades of white used.

White can also be particularly fresh-looking in during the summer months, especially when we all get tired of those long cold, dark winters we experience this far north. The added brightness of white reminds us that a new season has arrived, and allows us to enjoy our surroundings at a different level. One of the reasons cottages are often decorated in white is to add a simple charm that is both relaxing and inviting.

For those of you who find the use of white on white a little overwhelming and or even a bit boring, try applying a strong accent color to the room for added impact. If you have a floor that is a darker color than your walls it will ground the room. Adding furniture or other wood pieces to the room will also warm up the area. Display some of those antique pieces that you’ve stored away for ages. They work extremely well in all white rooms. Even the most traditional furniture makes dramatic statements when white is used to emphasize their classic shapes. White textured throws can be placed over sofas, loveseats or chairs to create another layer of tone and texture. It’s interesting how texture can make the same white look different. Try experimenting with some of your favorite textured fabrics, and create your own unique style. After all, that’s what decorating your home should be all about.

Just from its name, we know that this area should exude life and vivacity. Otherwise, nobody in the family or their guests would enjoy hanging out or spending time here. Fortunately, decorating your living room to make it livelier and more chic is not that difficult to accomplish. The following set of amazing tips, which gives guidelines on the use of fleur de lis wall art to the proper arrangement of furniture, will surely make the living room makeover a cinch.

Color theme

One of the most important facets of home decoration is the color theme of a room. In living rooms, it is always recommended to use light and neutral shades for the walls to provide a bright ambience and give an impression of larger space. Aside from that, these kinds of colors can complement a wide variety of colors and patterns, making it easier for you to choose furniture.

When choosing a color, you have to remember that colors have psychological effects on people and moods. Warm shades can brighten up your day while shades of green can help make you relax. Whatever color you select, just make sure that your furniture and carpet go well with it.

Furniture

It is always a good idea to have a center of interest. It can be a fireplace, an elegant sofa, a piece of intricate artwork, a piano and so on. Then you can arrange the other pieces of furniture around the focal point. Having a center of interest is not only for visual significance but more importantly, to make decoration and organization of the furniture easier.

It is also important to consider the space and traffic in your living area. The arrangement of your furniture must allow free movement and flow, and give an uncluttered look. If you have a large space, you can have more than one seating areas.

Lighting

The lighting in your living room should be sufficient but not too bright. For general lighting, an overhead lamp or light fixture will be ideal. Place this in an area where it will not shine directly on people’s eyes when they are sitting. Reading lamps can provide task lighting while candles and smaller lamps are great for ambient or mood lighting.

Accents

Wall arts such as fleur de lis wall art can surely make a huge difference in

your living area. Fleur de lis or a Flower Lily, which has been associated with French and English royalty, is considered a symbol of purity and perfection. Today, it is very common to see this symbol as a piece of ornamental design and decoration. Aside from wall arts, this design is also typically used in woven table, metal sculptures, and iron furniture designs.

Other kinds of accents that you can add in your living room include pictures, paintings, metal sculptures, mirrors, flower vases, newspaper stand, statues, and lamps.

The living room or the receiving area is one of the busiest places in any home. This is where the family spend time with each other watching TV or talking, and this is also where they welcome and receive guests. And because this is one of the first places people get to see in your home, which forms a lasting impression about your family, it is only right that you are able to decorate it nicely.

Some people have a problem deciding which of these two interior decorating elements to prioritize—style or function. But this is not a dilemma with contemporary style because this kind of design strives to achieve a perfect balance between the two.

This means that when decorating rooms in the house like the bedroom for example, it is not difficult to achieve making your favorite room sleek, stylish, inviting and comfortable. At the same time, you should only retain furniture that are functional for the room.

From the modern wall décor to the bed and furniture, make sure that everything blend harmoniously to achieve the perfect modern style. Below are tips on how to have a balance between style and comfort.

Bed and FurnitureThe bed is the focal point of your bedroom so it is imperative that you choose a bed that is not only highly comfortable but also sophisticated and elegant to add to the visual appeal of the room. You can either opt for a bed with a framework made of metal or go for hard darker woods with clean lines. Just make sure that you stick with minimal design for the bed.

As for the furniture, it would be nice to have a little couch area if you have a large spaced bedroom. Otherwise, you would just have to make do with a closet and a dresser, which should complement the design of your bed.

It is imperative to arrange the furniture in such a way that the room will not look cluttered and crowded. Leave ample space for free movement and flow around the bedroom.

LightingLighting is a crucial element in contemporary home designs. Because of this, you should opt for bedroom lights that do not only provide sufficient general lighting but also have a modernistic appeal and appearance. There is a wide variety of modern lamps available in the market for you to choose from.

WindowsChoose window treatments carefully. If you want to have drapes or valances, be sure that you stay away from floral designs or too busy prints that do not match modern style. Your window treatment should not look too heavy on the eyes so it is better to stay away from dark colors like black or dark gray.

Artworks and AccessoriesTake into account your personality when choosing what kinds of artworks and accents to place in your bedroom. You can choose from artworks such as paintings, sculptures, modern wall décors, and contemporary metal wall hangings. Just be careful not to go overboard with too many accessories because in modern styles you need to keep everything minimal.

Wall and FlooringIt is best to stick with monochromatic color theme when it comes to painting the walls and ceilings, and choosing color for the floor. The key is to avoid busy prints and complicated designs. Usual shades found in modern homes include black, red, white, silver and gray.

The bedroom, which is undeniably one of your most favorite rooms because it serves as your private sanctuary where you can relax, unwind and spend intimate moments with your loved one, deserves to be decorated and designed the right way. After all, it is a reflection of your character and personality.

Unlike metal and glass, bricks and stone provide a textural foil to soft furnishings and wood that carries no danger of making your home appear harsh or cold. Available in so many variations and styles they can help create so many looks in your home and are one of the few materials that are just as usable in the bathroom as they are in the living room. Unusually for such hard materials, both can be surprisingly effective in bringing warmth to a room.

The most obvious reason you would use stone in your home is to add an air of understated class and expense. Stone comes with an unspoken guarantee of making any space look expensive. Marble for example brings with it its own connotations of stately homes or even Greek temples. Slate is a definite favourite amongst interior designers at the minute. The reason for this is it has a little something of everything, it is naturally hard wearing, it’s very chic and modern, it adds an element of the natural world to a room and it is timeless. When used to replace bathroom tiles or as a kitchen floor, its dark, mysterious grey tones instantly add glamour and seductive appeal. The beauty of each unevenly cut block practically jumps of the wall when contrasted with some extra soft bathroom towels or other

fabrics in a bright colour such as pink, orange or red.

Granite can be used in a simi-lar fashion to replace wood or Formica as a kitchen work-top. An ultra sleek stone, granite is also both hard

wearing and long lasting meaning you are not choosing style over substance but instead are getting a glorious blend of the two.

Old barn conversions look stunning when the original stone work is left exposed on main walls. The walls may need extensive cleaning and re-pointing, nevertheless the end result is well worth the extra effort. The natural variations in the colours and hues of the stone can provide a great way to coordinate soft furnishings with.

Since the New York loft or warehouse style apartment started to greatly influence interior design almost twenty years ago, bare brick walls have been a long sought after feature in modern homes or apartments. A bare brick wall oozes quality, solidness and style and like slate, contrasts unbelievably well with soft furnishings or other natural elements such as wood. To make the most of a bare brick wall, spotlights should be positioned above and angled down onto the wall in order to really show of its texture. the beauty of a brick wall is that the red tinge of the bricks actually add warmth to a space and really sit well next to delicately patterned curtains or settees.

Short of tearing back the plaster in the hope of finding a perfect brick wall in our living room, half brick can now be purchased in most DIY stores which basically allow us to create a brick veneer over an existing wall and enjoy the same effect for a fraction of the cost.About the Author: Written by Terry Henman Terrys Fabrics offer a wide range of curtains and fabrics. Landscape curbing adds beauty to landscapes by giving definition to flower beds, sidewalks and pathways. It makes grass mowing more particular and easy, while giving clear boundaries on parking bays and side walks. In addition, because the grass, mulch and the soils are separated, it becomes easier to maintain a beautiful garden.

Before installing the curb, one should ensure that they are comfortable with their landscaping. Ideally, if there is any leveling that needs to be done on the landscape, it should be done before landscape curbing is considered. The homeowner can do the curbing themselves, but the use of curbing professionals is encouraged if one is to have admirable results from the work. One should preplan the outline of the flowerbeds before contracting a curbing professional. The borderlines can be marked by white paint, a garden hose or sisal ropes. This can be removed once the idea of what one wants the garden to look like is communicated to the curbing professional.

A sod riper is then used to rip off the top layer of grass, after which some top soil is scooped in preparation for the curb installation. At this point, the homeowner will have decided whether they want to use concrete curbs, plastic curbs, metal curbs or brick curbs. A curb extruder machine is then used to pour a mixture of concrete and cement on the marked borders. The contractor installing the curb should ensure that the right width and height of the curb is attained before leaving it to dry.

To get colored curbs, the contractor pours colored slurry on the wet curb and evens it out with a hand trowel. A second application may be applied if the homeowner desires so, in order to give the color a richer look. At this stage, patterns can be made on the curb. To prevent cracks forming on the curb, the contractor should create expansion units on the curb. After drying, the sealer is applied on the curb.

Curbs beautify landscapes by their brighter borders that emphasize lawns and flower beds. In addition, they make garden maintenance easier by minimizing the lawn edging responsibilities. Because the curb keeps the grass away from the flower beds, a homeowner weeding chores are

also minimized.

Concrete Curbs are long lasting and may go for years on end before requiring any form of maintenance because they are able to withstand different weathers. Brick curbing on the other hand, requires the same process of installation, except that bricks are laid on the curb areas. Brick curbing is done on flowerbeds, parking areas, driveways and side walks. Slanted brick curbs are ideal for use on lawns as one can comfortably use a lawn mower on the edges of the curbs.

Whatever the material one chooses to use, landscape curbing presents homeowners and property developers with unique ways of enhancing the landscape surrounding residential homes and commercial buildings. It also gives them mild ways of restricting human activity within the outlines of parking bays and sidewalks.

talian cuisine goes back a long way and it has taken many centuries for it to evolve though the earliest roots go all the way back to the fourth century BC. In addition, the Greeks, Romans, Turks and the Arabs have all had a great influence on Italian

cuisine. So we see that traditional Italian food is rich in history and each region of Italy has added its own signature dish. Traditional Italian food and Italian food recipes have become staples the world over for their simple yet succulent dishes that combine robust sauces, cured meats and a variety of delectable cheeses to produce exquisite and filling dishes. From Tuscany and Lombardy to the islands of Sardinia and Sicily traditional Italian food is a flavourful expression of the rich history of the country.

For most non-Italians the Italian cuisine is restricted to the few dishes that have managed to gain world wide acclaim, namely spaghetti and pizza. People tend to assume that traditional Italian food is all pretty much alike and that there is no such variety in the Italian way of cooking. The truth however is quite the contrary as Italian cuisine in its entirety is extremely diverse, rich and varied.

The multiplicity of the recipes that you find for pasta is a great example of the extensiveness of Italian cuisine. If you ask ten different people in the same region about how to make some pasta sauce you would end up with ten different recipes. First courses like spaghetti, risotto or gnocchi are very popular as they are light and easy to prepare, and offer virtually unlimited recipes for the creative cook.

Pasta happens to be the most popular food item in Italy. Any pasta base can be accented with an unlimited number of additions including sausage, chicken, red and green peppers, mussels, clams and a wide variety of other meats and vegetables.

But Italian food doesn’t stop there. You will find antipasto (starters): Cold cuts and cheeses with fresh garden vegetables and special bread. The sweet smells of nature and sunny days of spring and summer. Superb salads, beautiful breads and sumptuous puddings, make up the rest of the gloriously fresh menus. Roast fillet of salmon wrapped in pancetta served with braised lentils, green beans & a mustard

dressing; braised lamb shank served with sage potato puree in a rich tomato sauce;.Fillet of pork in a mushroom, leek, three mustard and white wine cream sauce; stuffed beef roll with Parma ham, spinach and mozzarella cheese cooked in a red wine beef stock and artichoke sauce. The list goes on. Of course there is always a vast selection of pizza and pasta specialties for every region.

Finally we should remember that Italy is the largest producer of wine in the world so naturally traditional Italian food is always accompanied with a bottle or two of vintage red or white wine. Because of Italy’s landscape scope that includes the mountainous Alps and the southern Mediterranean beaches a rich and vibrant selection of wines can be found to accompany any traditional Italian food dish.

1 pork loin roast, about 3 to 3-1/2 pounds1 untreated cedar plank, about 4 inches by 12”, soaked in water for at least 1 hour

1. In a large sauté pan combine the pineapple, sugar, vinegar, lime juice, jalapeño, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, and cook over medium-high heat for 7 to 10 minutes. If there is still a lot of liquid in the bottom of the pan, remove the pineapple with a slotted spoon and transfer it to a serving bowl. 3. Trim any excess fat and silver skin from the roast. Distribute the rub onto all surfaces of the roast. Place the roast on the soaked cedar plank. Hi Reena,Year after year, mildew develops along the caulking/sealant around my windows. In past years, my husband has regularly used bleach and much elbow grease to clean it. We don’t mind the normal amount of work a house takes but this is ridiculous, not to mention probably harmful to our health – both the “guck” and the bleach solution! The last two years have shown much growth of the mildew. We were almost prepared to replace all of our windows (at a cost of $25,000 to $48,000) until the inspector who did our Energy Audit said that the windows were quite fine and only a few were leaking to a minor extent. Have you any suggestions of how to clean off the “guck” safely/non-toxically, effectively and for more than just a few months? I hate the thought of removing all my windows and having them in a landfill site when they’re still fairly energy efficient. I greatly look forward to hearing from you. Eve

Hi Eve,Based on your description the problem does not sound like a window problem but rather high humidity levels in your home coming from day to day activities such as: boiling water, bathing, dishwasher etc. In order to reduce condensation build-up in your home, make sure that you use fans in the kitchen and bathroom as well as a dehumidifier when necessary. It may be worth your while to call a professional to access moisture levels in your home and to verify that you have proper ventilation

and insulation in you roof, crawl space and basement. Making the proper changes in your home such as upgrading your furnace may be advised. If you do decide to make changes,

check to see if the government is offering any homeowner energy grants in your area.In terms of cleaning the windows; you can combine vinegar with 10-15 drops of tea tree oil. This will give you a great clean but is not a long term solution. Tea tree oil can be found in pharmacies at grocery and health food stores. Ask your local pharmacist.

Hi Reena,I read your hints in the newspaper every week. I’m having a real battle with cutworms in my garden and want to know if you have any suggestions on how to get rid of them. Val

Hi Val,Cutworms can be a challenge even to experienced gardeners because they cut off plants above, at, or below soil surface. In order to reduce cutworms in your garden; handpick cutworms from plants and squash them or drop them in a bucket of soapy water. This is best done at night when cutworms are most active. Also prevent cutworms from becoming a problem in the first place by making collars for your plants using stiff plastic, cardboard or metal. Leave a gap of approximately 1 cm around stem and make sure the collar extends 2.5 cm below to 5 cm above the

soil surface. You can also use plastic drink straws or toilet paper rolls or sprinkle broken egg shells around plants. Also sprinkle cornmeal around plants because cutworms are incapable of digesting this tasty little treat. Lastly, Bacillus Thuringiensis, or BT, is a well-known biological control for all types of caterpillars.

Hi Reena,Just read your article about tackling ants in the yard. I have been using a recipe of 1 cup icing sugar, 2 tbsp. borax that was given to me by a senior farmer several years ago. It works!!! I noticed your recipe is reversed. Not sure why the big difference! Bev

Hi Bev,In my book I refer to a few different solutions for ants and one of the recipes uses a combination of borax and icing sugar. The quantity is not that important, the idea is that ants love the taste of icing sugar but their system cannot handle borax. Some people mix 50/50 of each together. You can also add a few drops of honey onto the solution for even faster results. Keep borax away from pets and children it is poisonous.

Outstanding Feedback:Dear Reena,

I read in your column about the lady who got ‘Easy Off Oven Cleaner’ on the floor in spite of having newspapers down. I just want to let you know the exact same thing happened to me and I tried all my cleaning products and nothing helped.

Then my daughter came to visit and said, “Oh, just use an S.O.S pad and she proceeded to clean my floor and the spots came

off perfectly. I enjoy your column very much. Helen

First, evaluate your environment. Do you need to consider weather, such as

hurricanes, when selecting what your shed will be made of? Sheds come in lots

of designs and can be made from a variety of materials, ranging from wood, to

vinyl or plastic, to metal. Metal sheds can stand up to more severe weather, while

a vinyl “click-together” shed may be easier to install. You will also want to think

about what type of flooring (if any) you would like to have.

Second, think about what you will store in your shed, and how you plan to use

your new space. Are you putting a lawn-mower and other yard tools in the shed?

If so, measure how much space these items will take up, and plan for even more

storage areas if possible. Remember, you will want to store your garden chemicals

and fertilizers separately from pool chemicals and your automotive needs. Do you

want to work inside the shed? Sheds can be configured to include work areas for

re-potting plants, greenhouse areas, etc. Perhaps you need space for the family

bicycles, too.

Third, consider what style of shed you find attractive. Do you want to coordinate

the appearance of your shed with your house or other out-buildings? If you do,

you will most likely consider a plastic/vinyl or wood structure. Do you want to

store your patio cushions inside for the winter, or during foul weather? Perhaps a

gabled roof would be a good choice. Do you need a wide doorway to

accommodate your ride-on mower? Think about what tools you use, and the

frequency of use, as you go about your planning.

Before you make your final decision, you should check with your local authorities

about permits, codes, and foundation requirements for sheds, which may vary

depending on how large your shed will be and where you live. Carefully consider

what maximum height or setback rules may apply as well. A good idea is to start

thinking about your cubic feet of storage – a lift-up roof may be as small as 20

c.f., while a larger shed might be over 400 cubic feet. Again, think about what

type of flooring you require, and whether you plan to install the shed yourself

or will have the shed installed by a professional. Some floors need a foundation

poured to particular specifications, while other floors will not require this.

Next, if you have a good idea of the size and style shed you want, as well as the

local requirements, you can begin shopping! Perhaps a large metal shed with

a metal floor is right for you. Maybe you need a fancier building to match that

gazebo you put in (or are dreaming of), or want windows or a roof line to match

your existing home. Maybe a snap-together plastic shed is right for you, so that

you can begin organizing your tools in the same weekend! Consider your budget

– will you spend $300, $600, or several thousands- and choose a shed that will

meet all of your needs.

There are many shed options to choose from, and with some careful planning

you can plan to purchase and install a useful, durable design that will serve your

needs for years to come.

Cocktails are not only savoury to sip but also look exciting and fun to drink; they are perfect for celebrations as they tend to elicit a pleasurable response among drinkers. Fortunately, cocktails can be made at home like a professional.

TIP 1: Be ready with glassesCocktails will not look like one if you do not use the appropriate glass. Besides, cocktails are meant to be consumed when they are cold, so using large glasses will take time to finish and you will end up not really enjoying the taste. It is recommended to invest in cocktail glasses such as martini, margarita, and highball glasses.

TIP 2: Keep a collection of cocktail tools and suppliesJazz up your bar with the basic barware; it is essential that you have the right measuring equipments to create a well-balanced drink. Opting for a jigger or a shot glass is good for measuring the necessary ounces. Also get a durable blender that is safe to use in the dishwasher and do not forget those famous cocktail shakers.

TIP 3: Get equipped with some cocktail recipesCheck out those cocktail books that feature the classic Sidecar and Manhattan. You can also step into the modern world by adding pureed vegetables into the drink instead of pureed fruit, but do not put in too much experimentation though as you might end up with a nasty tasting mix.

TIP 4: Use only the finest ingredientsDon’t worry too much about looking for what you need to put in. Use fruits and vegetables that are in season and liquor that will complement its flavour. Having tomatoes or peaches in summer make fantastic cocktail ingredients.

TIP 5: The chilling processAs soon as you are equipped and ready, start by chilling those cocktail glasses. It can be as simple as putting the glass in the freezer for some hours or pouring in water with ice. Take them out only when you are ready to pour the mixed drink, this way the drink is kept smooth and cool for a longer time after it has been served.

TIP 6: Measuring your spiritsAlways hold spirit bottles by the neck when pouring. There is nothing really

special to this; it is just that by doing so, you are making it easier on yourself to put in exactly the accurate measure.

TIP 7: Adding the iceNow that you have poured in all the ingredients, add some ice before you start shaking them. This should be fresh ice though so if you need to buy them then do so. Firm ice will prevent it from melting too quickly and will make a crisp cocktail drink.

TIP 8: Shake it well and shake it some moreThis is probably the grooviest part in cocktail mixing. While you can practice all those impressive stunts, just make sure that you mix the drink well inside the shaker until the cold spreads throughout the shaker.

TIP 9: Dress up that cocktail.Cocktail drinks will kind of look empty without some little garnishing. Ripe limes make the cocktail presentation come alive as well as complementing your mix. They can be cut into wedges, slices, and half-moons for that attractive garnish.

TIP 10: Taste it before you serve it.Take a small sip and see if you have done well, this way you can make sure that your guests will enjoy it as much as you.

MOTIV

If you’re new to the GPS game and you have no idea what to look for, I’m going to make it a little easier to hopefully let you find out what you want. If you feel you’re not great with technology, don’t worry about it! In fact, most people aren’t that great when it comes to new things but when it comes to GPS systems, most of them are user friendly.

Looking at the friendlinessThe first thing we want to look at is how friendly this GPS is for you. I would go to a local electronic store and test out the GPS units they have on display. Play with the buttons, ask questions and see which one you like. You won’t want to get one that’s complicated if you’re not familiar with them. When you find one you like, don’t buy it just yet because you’ll want to research the price online before you actually buy it.

Check out the optionsThe more you pay, the more options you’re going to get. For example, a $400 unit is going to come with many options like voice recognition, traffic details, gas prices in your area and more. If you only spend around $100, you’re not going to get any of this. The question you want to ask yourself is if you want all of these options.

The screen sizeYou wouldn’t think the screen size is an important factor but it really is. If you’re getting older and have bad eyesight, you’re going to want to check out the screen while driving. You wouldn’t want to squint while driving or look up close; this is just calling for disaster! Always make sure you get a device that has a screen that’s good to view.

Is it portable? Are you looking to get a portable GPS or one you can install in your car? If you’re going to ask me first, I’d say portable because you can take it car to car and it’s cheaper. With a GPS unit that’s going to be installed, you’re looking at labor fees and the price is going to be a little bit more. When you do get a portable unit, make sure that you get the accessories that are recommended because you won’t be able to mount it if you don’t get them.

Look at the reviews onlineThe last thing you want to do is look for reviews online. The reason you’ll want to look for reviews is because like anything, you want to make sure other people are happy with it. Go to major retailer websites and look at the star ratings. The higher the ratings are, the more likely I would purchase it.

With so many GPS units on the market, make sure that you follow the tips above to get the one you want. Most of the GPS units on the market are going to range anywhere from $99-$500. Check out your local retailer online and offline and hopefully you’ll find the unit you’re looking for!

Your Next Tune Up

The phrase ‘tune up’ is actually a bit vague for many people who own vehicles. Some say that a tune up consists of changing your oil, air filter, spark plugs and may also include belt inspection. Others say that you should even change your transmission fluid… so who is right? Here is a comprehensive list of steps you should consider doing every 30,000 to 40,000 miles (review your owner’s manual for manufacturers recommendation) to keep your engine running smooth and to minimize the chances for engine problems.Step One – Replace the fuel filter. The fuel filter is one of those basic engine components that may only cost $10 or $20, but can protect your engine from thousands of dollars in damage if you change it regularly. Carburetors and fuel injection systems can be clogged up by the tiniest of particles, so a properly functioning fuel filter is very important. Don’t skip this step, no one wants their car to die in an intersection … and isn’t that always where it happens?Step Two - Change the spark plugs (unless they’re pulse plugs, in which case you have 10,000 – 20,000 more miles to go). This is one part many people skimp on because they only look at price and do not factor in the importance of this component. I recommend the pulse plug by Enerpulse because of it helps to burn fuel more completely, making the combustion process more efficient. This leads to an increase in gas mileage (some times as much as 4 mpg) and increased power at acceleration. Also examine the spark plug wires and replace as needed. A new set of high-quality wires is worth the cost. They may be permanently attached to the distributor cap, so it will have to be changed as well.Step Three - Replace the distributor cap and rotor if your car has them (some newer models with distributorless ignition do not). Cold morning starts can really wear on your ignition system, this step will help keep your engine starting smooth.Step Four – (For cars older than 1978) Change the points and condenser for cars that do not have an electronic ignition. You’ll actually want your points changed, or at least adjusted, every six months or so (if they’re changed, check the ignition timing as well).Step Five – (Also applies to cars older than 1980) Check the ignition timing, each car has a recommended timing and as the car ages, it will get out of kilter. Having it checked and adjusted will also help alleviate those embarrassing stalls at an intersection. Cars with an electronic ignition will most likely not need this step. Check your owner’s guide.Step Six – Adjust the valves, if your car has hydraulic valves then you can skip this

step. Again check your owner’s manual to verify what type of valves your car has. This is a good time to replace the valve cover gasket as well. If you see any oil then this is a good time to investigate the seepage before it turns in to a leak.Step Seven – Visually check all your belts. You are looking for wear and to make sure they are tight. Turn the car on and listen for any squealing from a belt. Replace any belts that look suspicious.Step Eight – Check and top off any engine fluids, this is also a good time to have the oil and oil filter changed.Step Nine – Check the condition of your air filter, if the filter looks dirty replace it.Step Ten – If you have a manual transmission vehicle, you want to have the clutch examined and adjusted if necessary. This step allows you to stay on top of the amount of wear on your clutch and forecast when it will need replacing.Step Eleven – Check the fluid level in your battery, if it is low add distilled water. This is also a good time to clean the contact terminals.Step Twelve – Have the PCV valve replaced, this is an inexpensive part and goes a long way in keeping your car running smooth. A plugged PCV valve causes the car to stall or run very rough. That’s it! As you can see, some steps do not apply to every car depending on age,

engine technology and transmission type. This is the most comprehensive list I could find and put in to one article to help the less mechanical souls to keep their engines in tip top shape. Happy motoring -

In 1750 there were about 800 million people in the world. In 1850 there were a billion more, and by 1950, another billion. Then it took just 50 years to double to 6 billion.

Half the world’s population earns about 5% of the world’s wealth.

There are more than 600 million telephone lines, yet almost half the world’s population has never made a phone call on a land line. However, more than half the world’s population has made a cell phone call. There are more than 2 billion cell phones in use.

More personal telephone calls are made on Mother’s Day in the USA than on any other day in any other country.

Most reverse charge calls takes place on Father’s Day.

One in ten people in the world live on an island.

The chance of being born on Leap Day is about 684 out of a million, or 1 in 1461. Less than 5 million people have their birthday on Leap Day.

The odds of being struck by lightning are about 600,000 to one

Audi R8 – one of the fastest cars. The German automaker, Audi, in 2007 introduced a sports car with mid-engine design for a whopping US$113,150. It started hitting the ramp at the auto shows and other events in 2006 for the first time. The design is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo. It should be noted that Audi owns the Lamborghini Spa completely. The car was originally a racecar. Audi had decided as early as 2005 to use the racecar as a base for a new road car, which was the Audi R8. It also borrows heavily from Audi Le Mans quattro concept car. The Audi R8 was officially launched on the 30th of September 2006 at the Paris Motor Show.

The Audi R8 is fitted with an engine at “mid-ships”. This basically means that the engine is housed between the front and rear axles. The engine has a 4.2 liter capacity, with its DOHC FSI technology producing 420 hp. This dream of a car has an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. It is the same engine as the one used in Audi RS4.

The car has amazing thrust with the torque going as high as 317 lb-ft. This car achieves a top speed of 187 mph. The Audi R8 also comes equipped with disc brakes, dry-sump lubrication and four-link suspension, Quattro all wheel drive and Servotronic steering. There is also an option between manual six-speed transmission and the “R tronic” (single clutch semi-automatic) trans-mission. Originally there used to be an additional option of a double clutch gearbox but that option is no longer available.

It weighs approximately 1560 kg. The Audi R8 goes high tech in its suspension capabilities with magneto rheological dampers. These are con-trolled using a magnetic fluid and which is in turn controlled using an electromagnet. This is used to sense the change in the road conditions and protect the passengers from it, providing the ultimate driving experience.

The R8 closely resembles the Lamborghini Gallordo and deviates from it dramatically only when it comes to styling, design, engine and pricing. The Audi assures its drivers of a totally secure experience ensuring that the Audi R8 is equipped with side impact protection, crash sensors, ESP and an extremely rigid bodyshell in addition to the standard features of airbags, central locking system and the rest.

The Audi R8 also boasts of a Bang & Olufsen stereo system and Carbon Ceramic composite breaks. Add to this the BI-XENON headlights, which uses electronically controlled gas discharge lamps, an Oxygen Silver or Carbon sideblade, a retractable rear spoiler, reinforced bumpers, twin tailpipes and a single frame grille in high gloss black and you have one sweet ride.

The Audi R8 is definitely easy on the eye and one of the sweetest rides present in the market. The inside of the car is just as mouth watering as the outside, with sports seats, a multi-function three-spoke steering wheel, and auto-dimming interior mirrors. But what takes the interior to a whole new level is the Alacantra, a suede-like fabric, which is used for the upholstering. This car is widely touted as the only car that can actually better the Porsche 911 experience, which is considered to be the ultimate in sports cars.

The start of the twentieth century’s second half saw many people driving huge cars that were insatiable fuel guzzlers. At around this time the roads started seeing smaller cars that could not maneuver up hills that were too steep easily but could out do the bigger cars when it came to driving on ice or snow. This car did not use up much fuel and did not need as many repairs. It could only accommodate four people and had a mounted engine in the rear. The car in question is the Volkswagen. Many people still use this car, presently. The Volkswagen was introduced by American soldiers that had returned from the occupation in Europe. The Volkswagen was the brainchild and political pawn of Dictator Adolph Hitler.

The Genesis of the Volkswagen started when Hitler called in Ferdinand Porsche an exemplary engineer credited with other successful models and told him of the plans he had for a car. The meeting took place at Hotel Kasierhof in 1933. Volkswagen means the “people car”. Some of the features that Hitler wanted included in the car were a small body, a four seater, have the capacity to accomplish forty miles per gallon. Another feature was also included because quite a number of Germans lacked garages. Hitler then went a step forward and stipulated the price that the Volkswagen would go for at summer’s end in 1933. He required the car not to be sold for more than 1000Marks.

Porsche dismissed the idea because the price was too low but unknown to him, Hitler wanted to use the Volkswagen to win the Germans over. Almost a year later Porsche was ordered to make three sample models within a period of ten months. After meticulous preparation and hardwork amid intense pressure form Hitler, the three Volkswagen prototypes were ready. The cars were taken on relentless road tests and Hitler announced during the 1937 Automobile show that production would start in no time. Plans for the

factory that would produce the cars were now in motion and meanwhile more cars were built and tested.

The project that was supposed to take place at the Wolfsburg plant, which the Americans had helped to design stalled due to the war. After the war the plant was on the British side and they discovered the blueprints of Volkswagen and they promptly started producing the cars in 1946. The cars started selling in Germany and went on to be sold in the rest of Europe. In 1948, the newly appointed Volkswagen director, Dr. Ing. Heinz Nordoff and his policy was to cut any ties with history. The director was still in charge when the Government of West Germany was given the factory. Over a million cars were manufactured by 1955 and Nordoff established a big service organization. With service and replacement parts available, more people started buying Volkswagens. It has emerged that a Volkswagen can float as well once it falls in deep waters. The Volkswagen has been around for long and it seems it is here to stay.

n RV awning needs to be protected in order to keep it looking good

year after year. When you start to get your RV ready for summer,

there are some things that you should do to make sure that the

awning is in good working order. This includes making sure that all

the moving parts are working. You should never use motor oil on the gears

of a retractable RV awning - this requires pure silicon spray.

Along with having the awning on your RV to give you more outdoor living

space there are options that you can include with your purchase to make

your camping experience that much better. These include mats and lights so

that you can enjoy the awning in all kinds of weather. An RV awning mat is

similar to a rug, but you spread it on the ground under the awning so that

you have your own unique patio. Some of the RV awnings some with lights

included or you can buy RV lights designed specifically for your RV awning.

An RV awning mat is designed to be sturdy and is rugged enough to with-

stand outdoor use. It is also lightweight and can be rolled up to fit in an

overnight bag. You can get a mat that matches the color or your RV awning

or one that has an outdoor theme. These mats are well suited for any type

of ground. Having a mat under your awning means that you don’t have to

put on your sandals when you want to sit outside your RV. You can walk on

these in your bare feet.

RV awning lights consist of 8-inch polyethelene globes and they have plastic

tops that snap in place. These lights suited for an RV awning also have a

hanging chain and they only take an ordinary 7 -watt light bulb. You will

need to have an electrical hook up in the camping space in order to

operate these awning lights because they need to be plugged in to a source

of electricity. They are well able to withstand the elements of the weather,

but like the awning, they are not designed for use in wind.

With the many options that you can buy to accompany your RV awning,

you can make your motor home your home away from home. You can enjoy

the comforts of having a unique patio with an RV awning mat and lights

that let you sit outside after dark. You can still use the lights when it is

raining and with the RV awning in place, you will be warm and dry.

Locating and hooking a fish on a lure or on natural bait is usually the toughest problem in fishing, but after the fish is hooked there’s also the important job of boating or landing it. In doing this, experience is the best teacher; the best way to learn how to play and land a fish is by hooking many of them.

However, there are some tips and hints which can be studied in advance so that you won’t be fumbling and groping in the dark.

Playing and boating or landing small fish is often no problem and with a strong line and a stiff rod you can usually merely tighten the drag and reel them in. But when you are fishing with light rods, thin lines and for big fish you must be careful not to strain your tackle. Naturally, broken lines, straightened hooks and even a snapped rod or two are all part of the game and even top-notch anglers encounter them from time to time, but the idea is not to let this happen too often.

When fishing with a spinning outfit you usually use a light line with the right drag setting. This is very important. One way to set the drag is to run your line through the guides on the rod, tie it to a stationary object, such as a pole or a tree, and then start backing up and letting line off the reel spool until you are at least 75 or 100 ft. from the end of the line

Next, you tighten the drag a bit and back up, holding the rod tip high. Keep backing up and tightening the drag until the rod takes its maximum bend. When this happens try backing up again. The line should slip off the spool but not too freely.

When fishing for fish which, when hooked, start off with long, fast runs, you need a fairly light drag. If a fish tends to take out a lot of line you may even have to loosen the drag still more. When you are fishing from a boat and you hook a big fish on light tackle it may be necessary either to follow the fish to keep it from taking too much line or to regain some line while the fish is resting.

On the other hand, when you have a fish near the boat or shore ready for boating or landing, you often have to tighten the drag a bit in order to bring him in. This is

especially true when fishing in a strong tide or current. Of course, you should never tighten the drag so much that no line will come off. With a spinning reel it is often safer to apply pressure to the reel spool with your finger than to tighten the knob which increases the drag tension.

The same principle applies when you are using a conventional rod and reel. When you are fishing for big fish the drag should always be set well below the strength of the line. The longer the runs made by a particular fish, the lighter the drag setting should be. During a fight the rod should always be held up so that the strain and shock will be taken by the rod tip. Never point the rod at the fish or let it rest on the gunwale of the boat.

The most crucial time in fighting a fish is when it is near the boat or the shore, almost ready for the gaff. Here the angler shouldn’t tighten his drag but should be set for a sudden run when the fish sees the boat or the first attempt at gaffing is missed.

Gaffing is a job for a man with steady nerves and quick reflexes. Always wait until the fish is near the boat and thoroughly played out. Gaffing a big fish when it is still green is dangerous - you can be pulled overboard. Also, a wild run or leap can break the line.

With these few guidelines in mind, you should be able to land that fish every time!

Initially, we would think that the boat accessories industry does not carve a significant niche in the con-sumer market. How many people would actually own boats? Or how many of these people would spend good money dressing up their boats, for that matter? In reality, however, boat accessories are as fashion-able as bags or apparel. There are boat accesso-ries for different types of

boats, and at reasonable prices, too.

There are a variety of boat accessories ranging from technical products such as tie downs, navigation lights, and pumps to electronic ones such as radar systems, radios, and lights. You will also find functional items such as seats, covers, and ladders. Not to be missed are the motor parts with the corresponding lubes.

Another category in the boat accessories market would include pedestals, fasteners, winches and jacks, spark plugs and starters, flooring and other internal setting items, tires and couplers, gauges, flotation aids and devices, anchors and rod holders, till and trim auxiliary materials, and fenders and dock lines.

Jackets, mooring equipment, heaters and lights, buoys, paddles, lifts, and hoists make up the precautionary products of boat accessories. Boat accessories that cater to the “lighter side” of boating life consist of barbecues, grills, and swim decks with showers. A boat owner may find a difficult time in deciding on what

boat accessories to purchase, as there are a great many selections to choose from. Anchors, for instance, may be resistant, powder-coated contraptions available in different shapes and weights. These can be accessorized by anchor spool lines, anchor chains, spools, and nylon ropes. The anchors are made to be tolerant to fresh water, sea water, or both.

Protective covering for boats can also be equipped with boat accessories such as steel, aluminum, or tie-down support poles. Cover materials may be made of canvas suitable to every kind of boat.

Boat accessories for docking are comprised of vinyl or plyfoam fenders, sturdy corner bumpers, and protective mats for the hull.

In summary, boat accessories have proven to be a booming industry. They are the answer to many a boat owner’s requirements. The products are easily obtainable in your local stores or via online purchasing.
