Abstract— The goal of this project is to form a

detailed analysis of Multi point video, audio, text and collaboration softwares like the Ekiga , Empathy and BigBlueButton ; and will be completing a survey, comparing them on issues like robustness in call quality, video quality in one to one as well as conference mode , for this purpose we shall deploy the WIRESHARK (packet sniffer for Linux) and

building on the data collected we shall have a better comparative understanding about the performance of these softwares in different open source environments like UBUNTU & FEDORA.

I.  INTRODUCTION

While using VOIP services whether for home use orbusiness purpose in a one to one or conference modeone often comes across problems like lost calls , bad callquality ,other line seems to be engaged while it isactually not & also jump calls.By using WIRESHARK weaim to go into the depth of these hassles and develop anunderstanding from the network point of view.

Tools & Soft phones to be used during the course of theproject -

Wireshark is the world's foremost network protocolanalyzer, and is the de facto standard across manyindustries and educational institutions. The features ofthis tool are:

Live capture and offline analysis Standard three-pane packet browser Multi-platform: Runs on Windows, Linux, OS X,

Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and many others Captured network data can be browsed via a GUI, or

via the TTY-mode TShark utility The most powerful display filters in the industry Rich VoIP analysis

Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols added everyday.

and many more features.

Empathy is an instant messaging client which supportstext, voice, video, file transfers, and inter-applicationcommunication over various IM protocols.

Empathy also provides a collection of re-usableGraphical User Interface widgets for developing instantmessaging clients for the GNOME desktop. It is writtenas extension to the Telepathy framework, for connectingto different instant messaging networks with a unified

user interface. Empathy has been included in theGNOME desktop since version

Ekiga (formerly called gnome is aVoIP and videoconferencing application for GNOME and Windows . Itis distributed as free software under the terms of theGNU General Public License. se" Ekiga supports boththe SIP and H.323 (based on OpenH323 protocols andis fully interoperable with any other SIP compliantapplication and with Microsoft NetMeeting . It supportsmany high-quality audio and video codecs.

BigBlueButton = The BigBlueButton is a versatile opensource project that is built over fourteen open source

components to create an integrated web conferencingsystem that runs on mac, unix or pc computers. some ofthe features of this softphone are web cammanagement, presentation in which any user can uploadPDF presentation, office document and keep everyone insync with their current page, zoom, pan, and see thepresenters mouse pointer. BigBlueButton voiceconferencing supports voice over IP (VOIP) conferencingout-of-the-box.

II.  CONCLUSION

Analysis of the performance of open source solutions

using Wireshark

Sumalya Pal, Jai Koolwal

This project will help the developers as well as VOIPusers to get an indepth view of the performance ofsoftphones on different platforms; which will not only helpthe VOIP enthusiasts to look for better alternativesaccording to their OS distro, but also will help futuredevelopers of new Linux environments like that ofALPINE LINUX, to tune their creations for betteradaptability to VOIP softphones. Since we will haveparameters like packet loss , bandwidth utilization at ourdisposal to be analyzed which will make it possible tocompare these soft phones on different platforms hencegiving us a clear picture of their robustness
