Compelling Products for a Technology Advantage

The Must See ‘ems technology and product recognition program is a highlight feature of the Executive Outlook Conference, held the day before the major print industry trade shows, GRAPH EXPO® and PRINT®. The program is sponsored by the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC) and conducted independently by the PrintCom sm Consulting Group. What is a Must See 'em? GRAPH EXPO 2008’s most compelling products and services, as selected by a panel of 16 leading industry consultants and trade magazine editors, are the Must See ‘ems for almost all exhibition attendees. Must See ‘ems products and services represent the technology that will impact virtually all types of printers. They represent the most compelling technology. These products and services are Must See ‘ems recognition recipients. Worth-a-Look for Niche Markets Some products and services being exhibited at GRAPH EXPO 2008 do not have as wide an application or broad impact on the industry as the Must See ‘ems, but are nevertheless especially important for niche markets or selected groups of printers or converters. Must See ‘ems Product Availability All Must See ‘ems and Worth-a-Look product selections are available for shipment by the end of the first quarter 2009. Selected from More Than 5,000 products Must See ‘ems and their companion Worth-a-Look products were selected from the more than 5,000 individual products being shown at Graph Expo 2008 by almost 600 exhibitors spread out over 460,000 square feet of McCormick Place exhibit space. Products were nominated in a reiterative process from supplier information including pre-show briefings and input from an independent Selection Committee. Nominees were reviewed and voted on by a 16 person committee in a secret ballot that required more than majority agreement that a product was compelling for a large number of exhibition attendees to achieve Must See ‘ems recognition. Products identified as compelling but of importance to a more limited audience or that are in an uncertain early adoption stage have been identified as Worth-a-Looks. Products under development and conceptually demonstratable but not yet a commercially available product are categorized under the ‘Future Print” heading. Selected hardware and software are categorized as follows: Encore products – 2007 Must See ‘ems selections that are still compelling Future Print – Demonstration of technologies and products under development and not now commercially available Production Technologies - Products listed by key technology groups Individual products and services – Compelling products that do not fall under a technology group

2008/09 Critical Survival Technologies In addition to reviewing the products and services that are at the show,

the Must See ‘ems Selection Committee analyzed and selected the technologies of print that in their judgment are the most important and compelling with emphasis on the those most likely to have the greatest impact on a printer’s ability to survive in a changing market being impacted by the current financial crisis. Some of the selections involve the implementation of technology or the application of groups of technologies or methods.

The top six technologies identified by the Selection panel as

commercial-printer profitable-survival critical are listed in order of priority. However, they are all almost equal in importance in the short to medium term. Second tier technologies are somewhat less important for basic survival, but are important in achieving profit-leader status. The Top Six Survival Technologies 1. Management Information Systems and Skills 2. Information Technology as a core competence 3. Color Management --- throughout the production process 4. Workflow, analog and digital applications 5. Digital Production Printing --- toner now, ink jet in the future; color and black/white 6. Web-to-Print Second Tier Survival Technologies 7. Advances in offset lithography technology, including automation of varying individual functions but not fully integrated prepress to binding/finishing automation. 8. Ability to use technology as a differentiator 9. Computer assisted materials management, including purchasing, materials testing, inventory control, waste/spoilage control (materials & labor) 10. Integrated Cross-Media Workflow

Cross-Media production capability

Print Becomes Computer-Centric

Fully implemented Management Information Systems (MIS) used in daily production and business operations was selected for the third consecutive year as the most critical technology for printers to employ in a changing print market. The selection of a fully implemented MIS implies that print operations personnel are properly trained, that data is collected in a timely fashion, that a full range of software modules are installed and used and that the resulting information is used in managing a print business for profitability. An effective MIS is also at the core of implementing integrated production automation, according to the Must See ‘ems Selection Committee.

One of the groups of technology that was a close runner-up to MIS was information technology in its broadest scope including the software and people skills for implementation, running and maintenance. Software, networks, and the accompanying computer hardware have permeated print production, mailing and fulfillment, other auxiliary services, variable data printing, database management and new diversified lines of business making it important for printers to have a core IT capability.

IT New Core Competence

While useful in the full implementation of MIS, IT competence is needed to use the data that can be MIS generated. For example, in statistical process control, waste/spoilage analysis, inventory management or integrated automation control. Salesmen are carrying laptops doing estimates and checking schedules in customers’ offices. Customers are directly accessing printers’ databases. Print has become computer-centric and it takes IT competence to implement reliably and profitably, according to the Must See ‘ems Technology and Product Selection Panel that identified the critical technologies. Must See ‘ems Technology and Products The Must See ‘ems and Worth-a-Look product selections which follow highlight the technology and product developments that enable printers to meet changing customer requirements and survive profitably in an e-challenging environment.

5

Encore Selections

2008 Encore Selections were made from products and technologies that received Must See ’ems recognition in 2007. They were selected for continuing recognition because, although not new, they represent compelling products or services that still are Worth-a-Look.

LaCrosse Litho Supply Booth 1253 ColorLink QMS ColorLink™ QMS is a new solution from La Crosse Litho Supply’s color experts for implementing and maintaining G7™. ColorLink™ QMS allows printers to have their live press runs analyzed in real time for color consistency, accuracy and adherence to G7 guidelines. ColorLink™ QMS enables a printer to benefit from a properly color-managed press through regular tests on live work without dedicated press runs. The system uses a specially configured X-Rite™ spectrophotometer reading the very small patches on the unique ColorLink™ QMS color bar. Spanning typical press sheets while only ¾ inch high, the color bar often fits on live work. This measurement provides a wealth of data enabling ongoing tracking and analysis of printing conditions.

The ColorLink™ QMS software was designed to pass or fail the relevance of the data in the color bar by analyzing the consistency of solids and their conformity to their established targets. TVI calculations are used to point out dot gain issues out of tolerance. If within tolerance, the ColorLink™ QMS software will process the standard G7 P2P patches to calibrate/verify curves to G7 printing targets. Up to eight P2P charts are qualified and averaged together for calibration/verification.

As many printers do not have access to these resources, La Crosse Litho Supply offers this solution via the ColorLink™ Control Capsule service. Utilizing the same process described above, the color bars are trimmed from live work and sent to the ColorLink™ Lab in Capsules for remote measurement and processing.

Lake Image Systems Booth 2070 Integra Vision IMB IntegraVision IMB is a camera based verification solution utilizing a PC with one or more cameras attached which provides three essential and simultaneous capabilities:

1) Reads and verifies each IMB (Intelligent Mail Bar-Code) to ensure that every printed IMB complies to USPS dimensional specifications, thus allowing the printer to qualify for maximum postal discounts

2) Identifies any missing/duplicate pieces in a production run by parsing the unique identifier out of the IMB code and checking sequencing of this identifier or by comparing this identifier to a data file

3) Generates integrity reports to prove the integrity the production run and provide an audit trail of every piece

The camera is typically mounted on a high speed print line (such as Scitex/Kodak head on an offset press), a mailing base (ex. High speed post card printing) or at the output of a mail inserter. The camera images the entire address area of the piece and simultaneous identifies missing/duplicate pieces while verifying the dimensional integrity of the IMB code. IntegraVision IMB operates at speeds up to 90,000 pieces per hour (inspecting every piece) and provides machine control to divert, stop the line and/or alert the operator based on a user definable number of errors.

Lake Image Systems Booth 2070 PrintScan PrintScan is a line scan based camera verification system which images an entire web width with a single camera, providing comprehensive print quality and data integrity verification on every printed piece, at production speeds. PrintScan can be integrated into litho/offset presses, digital printers, hi-speed inkjet printers, narrow web/label presses and ancillary equipment such as rewinders. PrintScan’s cameras image the entire web width (simplex or duplex) and check every physical page for: number/character legibility, barcode quality, streak/void detection, front/back matching, print alignment while providing piece level tracking and reporting. Capable of operating at speeds in excess of 500 feet per minute, PrintScan saves camera images of all defects and triggers actions (such as tabber, an inkjet marker or machine stop) when defects are identified. PrintScan’s integrity reporting provides an audit trail of all pieces produced and a separate report for all integrity errors which were identified during the production run.

Enfocus Booth 5463 Switch The Switch product family consists of three automation products that are easy to install and use: the entry-level LightSwitch focusing on receiving and sorting files, mainstream FullSwitch which adds support for automation of key third-party applications and advanced PowerSwitch when metadata or scripting support is required. Switch takes an essentially different tack on automation. Rather than embedding all necessary technology such as preflight, image optimization, imposition and proofing into the workflow product, Switch focuses on automating applications from third-party vendors using configurators. Supported applications include the Adobe Creative Suite applications, EFI XF, Ultimate Impostrip OnDemand, Alwan ColorHub, Elpical Claro and many more.

Building automated workflows is exceedingly easy using the fully visual flow editor. Once a flow is active, there is professional-level activity logging and rock-solid workflow exception handling. A special dashboard panel gives workflow administrators a one-view look on how Switch is processing. While being easy to use, Switch does not compromise on features. Variables can be used in all flavors to make job processing dynamic and refer to properties of the job in different tools and configurators. PowerSwitch adds full support for metadata (EXIF, XMP, JDF, IPTC, JDF) and introduces support for JavaScript, AppleScript and Visual Basic scripting. Helios Software Booth 5222 WebShare Manager WebShare Manager extends Helios WebShare, the remote file access and management application. WebShare Manager facilitates remote page layout production and synchronization. Using any web browser, remote users can view content in WebShare, and drag and drop images, text, etc. straight from WebShare into an InDesign or QuarkXPress document, or into a job folder. WebShare Manager and related extensions handle the download and update of the high-resolution images behind the scenes. The actual high-res originals are transferred (not the JPEG browser images). Simultaneously, very low-res proxy images are transferred as well, so that image placement can proceed even as the high-res images continue downloading in the background. Once each original image is received, it replaces the proxy. WebShare Manager can be configured to automatically synchronize all dragged and dropped content for a document, so that changes at one locale are updated at the other. As soon as a file is modified on the central server, it will be downloaded by the remote WebShare Manager. Synchronization of locally modified files with the main server is also possible. Multi-page document previews can also be saved to the WebShare server, so that collaborators can view project status from anywhere using just a web browser.

Heidelberg Booth 1200 Prinect Inpress Control Prinect Inpress Control is a fully integrated inline system that incorporates spectrophotometry for color measurement and control, and automatic registration in a single unit which is incorporated in the last printing unit before the coating unit, and in the case of perfecting presses, also in the printing unit just before the perfector. Measurement and control during makeready and production is achieved without stopping the press to pull sheets for analysis and follow-up. It is a sheetfed technology first. The system uses a specially designed control bar that incorporates elements for automated operation of the technology. Synchronization marks are incorporated to enable the system to locate the control bar; Auto-Register marks are used to ensure proper registration during makeready and production; and standard color patches are incorporated for spectral color measurement. The system measures up to eight colors (per side) and is rated to continuously measure the control bar on any measurable substrate printed at the maximum printing speed of the press (18,000 iph). Prinect Inpress Control incorporates a series of individual spectrophotometers that simultaneously measure all color patches in the control bar. After the first measurement is made, the unit moves laterally to the next ink zone until all zones are measured, and then moves in the reverse direction, continuously measuring the control bar. Measurement results are delivered directly to the Prinect Press Center, which in turn delivers automatic ink-zone adjustments to all printing units simultaneously

MetalFX Booth 4549 MetalFX for Flexo MetalFX® Technology is a universal process and spot metallic color system permitting millions of metallic colors to be printed, all by adding only one MetalFX base silver or gold ink to the usual CMYK mix. Until MetalFX was introduced, an extra color pass was required for each metallic hue desired. As a result, designers and printers avoided metallics due to the extra cost and difficulty on the press. MetalFX enables printers to create an unlimited number of metallic colors, all at one time and at no extra cost. The only requirement is a five-color press. MetalFX for Flexo brings the power and popularity of the original MetalFX process—suitable only for offset lithography—to flexography. This universal process permits millions of metallic colors to be printed in one pass, all by adding only one base silver ink to the usual CMYK mix. iCTP PlateWriter 2000 & 2004 The Glunz & Jensen PlateWriters 2000 and 2004 digitally image metal plates direct from a desktop computer. Using advances in inkjet technology, the PlateWriters image directly onto non-photo sensitive aluminum printing plates. Unlike traditional plate making, there is no special lighting requirements or any need for film, print down frames, processing equipment or chemistry. There is no photosensitive diazo coating, which means there is no processing at all, and therefore no chemical disposal or cleaning of processors. After the plate is imaged, pass it through the integrated finishing unit, which dries and gums the plate. It is ready to use immediately on press or store for later use. Average run lengths have exceeded 50,000. Glunz & Jensen claims that this technique of plate making makes iCtP one of the most environmentally friendly ways to make plates.

Heidelberg USA Booth 1200 Polar P.A.C.E. Cutting System Heidelberg’s Polar P.A.C.E. Cutting Systems is an Intertech 2008 award recipient. P.A.C.E. is the acronym for POLAR Automated Cutting for Efficiency that allows for faster throughput with less or no manual intervention with a higher quality standard. The major component behind P.A.C.E. is the with Autoturn Turning Gripper and Autotrans Loading Gripper that load, turn, and cut lifts of paper automatically. The benefits are endless, starting with increased productivity, reduced labor costs, economic cutting, ergonomic handling, high flexibility, minimum make-ready, no operator fatigue, immediate margin improvement, fast payback ROI, etc. Cutting paper has been always viewed as a necessary evil, a bottleneck, and a workman’s compensation case waiting to happen. The Return on Investment for a two- or three-shift operation is within two to three years. This is a no-brainer, considering that product life cycles of P.A.C.E. systems are at least fifteen years. Another huge financial benefit is the immediate margin improvement of around 20% due to the unskilled labor savings.

Air Motion Systems, Inc. Booth 1847 P3 UV System (UV Curing) P3™ is the third generation of Air Motion Systems’ Peak UV™ Curing System designed for inline, instantaneous drying of photo-initiated inks and coatings for sheet-fed and web offset printing. The P3 enhances shutter reliability, reduces energy consumption, increases flexibility and redundancy, and speeds lamp access significantly over existing systems. The reliability of P3 Modules is enhanced through “multi-axial motion”, a set of engineering features designed to maximize thermal durability of moving components in the UV module, "self-healing” shutters that guarantee self-alignment of reflectors, and “in-line sacrificial anodes” that protect against water corrosion of internal components. P3 Modules are the most energy efficient in their class, consuming up to 45% less energy than traditional UV systems. The modules accomplish this through “double-parabolic reflection” geometry that reduces UV electrical energy consumption, resulting in a significant reduction in annual electrical costs for printers. The P3 System further incorporates and improves on all the press flexibility, speed-of-access, and ease-of-use advancements – such as modular interchangeability, plug-and-play docking, and tool-less lamp change – first introduced by Air Motion Systems in previous generations.

Buhrs Americas Booth 1859 Dual Paper Wrapping System 4000 (Wrapping System) The Buhrs 4000 DPW Dual Paper Wrapping System, which Buhrs claims is an entirely new concept in wrapping, can accept preprinted rolls or be operated inline with the press. The web of preprinted wrapping paper is slit in the machine, creating twin envelope lines. Feeders position products on each envelope line, plus the machine can handle onserts such as other printed material, credit cards, and gimmicks. The Buhrs 4000 DPW can create clean looking envelopes without an outside flap, or it can produce standard envelope styles. After wrapping, products pass through an ejection gate and are delivered in a two-up flow for inline inkjet printing or stacking. The primary benefit of dual inline envelope production is that the machine can produce envelopes at the rate of 36,000 per hour while operating at a mechanical speed of only 18,000 per hour. The machine also operates in single mode at 18,000 per hour using either paper or polyester for wrapping.

Eastman Kodak’s Company Booth 600 CX Screening Technology (Hybrid Screening) CX screening technology enables users to configure the size of their screening dots in the highlights, midtones and shadows for both Maxtone AM and Staccato FM screening. Instead of a “one size fits all” algorithm as is commonly used, CX screening technology lets the user choose the size of highlight and shadow dots as well as the mid-tone screen ruling, making it possible to tailor the screens to their manufacturing capabilities and business needs. This functionality is available in FM (Staccato CX) and AM (Maxtone CX) and makes it possible for flexo and offset printers to configure screens for optimal performance and differentiation. The CX screening technology suite consists of Kodak Maxtone CX Screening (AM Screening) and Kodak Staccato CX Screening (FM Screening). Kodak Maxtone CX Screening is based on hybrid AM technology with the additional ability to precisely configure highlight and/or shadow dot size, independently, without changing screen ruling, angle or dot shape. Kodak Staccato CX screening is hybrid FM technology with the added ability to change highlight and shadow dot sizes and/or midtone screen rulings. In addition, Staccato CX comes with a wider range of screen rulings than is available with Staccato. CX screening technology gives users a unique tool to optimize output for quality, stability and reliability. Eastman Kodak’s Company Booth 600 NexPress Coater (Digital Press Auxiliary) Kodak NexPress Intelligent Dimensional Coating Solution with Kodak NexPress Dimensional Clear Dry Ink is a revolutionary in-line digital printing effect that can change the way print providers and their clients see and feel the printed output. As part of the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit of the Kodak NexPress Digital Production Color Presses, Dimensional Coating Solution and Dimensional Clear Dry Ink combine to produce a raised printing or tactile effect that enables the image to have “3D” feel that mimics the surface of the items in the image. This is accomplished in-line so productivity is maintained regardless of the substrate. A digital mask is created within the digital front end to identify the area to be dimensionalized. This can be the full image or part of the image depending on the desired impact. With Kodak NexPress Intelligent Dimensional Coating Solution, specific parts of the image can be targeted to be raised to variable heights. The result is an image of an orange can feel like an orange. Print providers can productively, efficiently and profitably produce certificates, business cards, direct mail, invitations, greeting cards, photo merchandise, letterhead, catalogs and more without using an off-line process. Based on the robust design of the Digimaster Platform, the EX300 uses a dual-engine system to produce duplex sheets across a broad range of substrates. The EX300 leverages the outstanding productivity and reliability of the current Digimaster EX platform. These systems are rated for the industry’s highest uptime and can achieve a duty cycle of up to 10 million images per month, according to Kodak. A speed upgrade module is also expected and will be available to existing Digimaster system customers or print providers who order an EX110, 125, 138 or 150 and want to upgrade to the EX300 later. This will be done on-site so that print providers can leverage their investment and minimize disruption to the print operation. Eastman Kodak Company Booth 600 Stream Concept Printhead (Ink Jet) The Stream Concept Printhead from Kodak is a 600 dpi, 4.16” inkjet head that prints black pigment ink at speeds of up to 1,000 fpm using Kodak’s proprietary Stream inkjet technology. Several Stream Concept Printheads from Kodak can be stitched together to provide wider page coverage in 4.16” increments. Kodak’s Stream inkjet technology allows inkjet drops to be formed by pulsating heat nozzles, which allows for accurate drop size and superior drop placement control, producing inkjet printing with offset class reliability, productivity, cost and quality with the full benefits of digital printing for high volume commercial applications. The Stream Concept Printheads from Kodak can be placed inline on nearly any narrow or wide format web offset press, allowing for high volume hybrid printing of offset and digital technologies. By printing and drying inline, the printed product is immediately available for finishing or roll-to-roll processing. At Graph Expo Kodak will be running digital hybrid printing with two Stream Concept Printheads mounted on a GSS transport system. A pre-printed offset roll will unwind with a Hunkeler unwind system passing under the Kodak Stream Concept printheads where 100% variable data will be inkjetted onto the substrate at 1000 feet a minute. The paper will then travel in front of 4 Adphos NIR 120 dryers before being rewound by the Hunkeler rewind device. A camera for visual inspection system will be provided by Videk which will be driven by Emtex software. The workflow and printing will be managed by the Kodak CS410 controller.
