Competencies for CRNBC Certified Practice: Reproductive Health – Sexually Transmitted Infections
The following competencies for the CRNBC-certified practice of Reproductive Health – Sexually Transmitted Infections include Section 8 restricted activities for registered nurses and include the diagnosis and treatment of the following diseases and disorders:
1. Chlamydia trachomatis (Reportable) 2. Neisseria gonorrhea (Reportable) 3. Mucopurulent cervicitis 4. Trichomoniasis 5. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) 6. Urethritis (Male)
7. Recurrent Urethritis (Male) 8. Lower urinary tract infection (Female) 9. Genital Warts 10. Treatment of STI Contacts
Nursing Practice Competencies for Reproductive Health Sexually Transmitted Infections Certified Practice
KNOWLEDGE of: SKILL in: JUDGMENT regarding:
ATTITUDE that:
socio-economic determinants of health as it pertains to clients’ STI risk
etiology, signs & symptoms, testing, complications, diagnostic findings
education and counselling techniques
treatment protocols/ pharmacological
applications and adverse events
documentation and reporting requirements
knowledge of STI epidemiology, local surveillance and affected populations
trauma informed care /practice
available and accessible resources /services for affected populations
ascertaining clients’ knowledge of their sexual health; STI; experiences that increase their risk
obtaining a sexual health history
performing relevant STI physical examination
specimen collection,, requisitioning tests
administering, dispensing and/or recommending STI medication
providing appropriate client education
facilitating partner notification procedures
collecting and documenting data for surveillance, reporting, and case management
determining STI screening requirements
determining approach and relevant strategies to assist clients in experiencing risk reduction
testing, treating, and providing follow-up, based on client assessment, clinical presentation, and lab data
recognizing pharmacological or non-drug treatment adverse events
referring clients to appropriate next-level services
determining appropriate strategies for notifying identified partners (‘contacts’)
consulting and referring to MD/NP
respects clients’ choices, beliefs and values
demonstrates self awareness of own beliefs, values, and practice limitations
demonstrates sensitivity regarding impact of STI diagnoses; infectious disease surveillance, reporting, and partner notification
