We Present Our Tithes and Offerings
Offertory: — David Stanley York......................Church ChoirOnce to every man and nation comes the moment to decide, in the strife of truth with falsehood for the good orevil side. By the light of burning martyrs, Jesus’ bleeding feet I track, toiling up new Calvaries ever with the crossthat turns not back. Though the cause of evil prosper, yet ‘tis truth alone is strong. Truth forever on the scaffold, wrong forever on the throne. Yet the scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown, standeth God withinthe shadow, keeping watch above His own. Amen.
Doxology: from (Hymn No. 694).....................................tune: Old HundredthPraise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below.Praise Him above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, begins a new three-week sermon seriesabout Jesus. Elliot Smith, our pastor for young adults, taskforce and evangelism, hoststoday’s service. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist/choirmasterfor today’s service.
Music: As we gather for worship we hear three very contrasting pieces titled, “Adagio,”which is the Italian word for “slow”. The by Bach, the centerpiece of a ThreeMovement “Concerto,” is really a trio sonata. Felix Mendelssohn’s is from his first“Organ Sonata” and is an echo piece among the organ strings. Roger Nyquist, fromSacramento, California, composed his to be the middle movement of a suite of piecesthat have never been published.
is a prayer hymn from the Baptist Hymnal written by BryanJeffery Leech. He was born in England but is now a retired pastor in California. Together withTom Fettke, they have written many contemporary hymns and spiritual cantatas.
(Hymn No. 36) was written by Joseph Swain, a Baptistminister who was involved in evangelism in London, using a tune by Freeman Lewis ofUniontown, Pennsylvania. Looking at old bulletins from our church, this hymn has been sungoften by this congregation.
is a choral composition that uses the words of Hymn No.606. The composer, David Stanley York (1920-2010) taught at Westminster Choir College,Princeton, New Jersey.
is a hymn written by Harry Emmerson Fosdick for thecongregation of the new Riverside Church in New York City. It speaks of the challenges thata church has in being relevant in today’s culture. The SDA Hymnal committee published thishymn with a different tune because they felt they had used the tune thesewords were written for, too many times in the hymnal already and at that time, this was anunknown hymn to Seventh-day Adventists. A setting by Lutheran musician, Paul Manz, isplayed at the end of today’s service.
Next Sabbath, January 21: Pastor Karl Haffner willcontinue a our sermon series,
9:30 a.m. Serv11:45 a.m. Music by the church choir and Bells of Praise

I. Recap
II. Preaching Like … A. Peter
1. Acts 2:14-36 (Acts 2) 22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to youby miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 Thisman was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wickedmen, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him fromthe agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him….
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, bothLord and Messiah.”
2. Acts 3:11-26(Acts 3) 13 “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant
Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to lethim go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 Youkilled the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this.”
3. Acts 10:34-43 (Acts 10) 37 “You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, … 38 how Godanointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healingall who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 We are witnesses of everythinghe did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but Godraised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.”
B. Stephen (Acts 7:1-53)(Acts 7) 51 “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like
your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did notpersecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you havebetrayed and murdered him— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but havenot obeyed it.”
C. Paul (Acts 13:16-22; 17:22-31; 21:37-22:21; 26:2-23) (Acts 26:19-23) 19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20 Firstto those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached thatthey should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds. 21 That is why someJews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me. 22 But God has helped me to this very day; so Istand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Mosessaid would happen— 23 that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bringthe message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”
