My God, I love thee, not because I hope for heaven thereby, nor yet because, who love Thee notmust die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, thou didst me upon the cross embrace; for me didst bear thenails and spear and manifold disgrace. Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, should I not love theewell? Not for the sake of winning heaven, nor of escaping hell. Not with the hope of gaining aught, not seeking a reward, but as thyself hast loved me, O everloving Lord. Even so I love thee, and willlove, and in thy praise will sing; solely because Thou art my God and my eternal King.

Worship Notes:

Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, continues the spring sermon series, “Five Things JesusNever Said and Why You Should Stop Believing Them.” Today he discusses “Fear the Final Crisis.” RandyDaniel, our church board chairman, hosts today’s worship. Victor Brown, vice president for enrollmentservices at Kettering College tells today’s Children’s Story. The Scripture Lesson will be read by Aubrey Kelleyin honor of his parents, Horace & Rosayle Kelley, who were the driving force behind KYA (Kettering YourgAdults) in the 1980s. Matthew Webster, who presents the Prayers of the People, is a junior at SouthernAdventist University. Along with being one of our returning college “kids,” Matthew was asked to give theprayer today in honor of his father, Perry Webster, who joined the Kettering church in 1981. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist/choir director for today’s service.

As we gather for worship we hear a setting of Hymn No. 650, using the Welshhymntune, which translates “Lovely.” We also hear Richard Purvis’ setting of the Easter HymnNo. 168,

(Hymn No. 223) was written by Matthew Bridges in 1851 and published inhis The tune, means “crowns” and was composed especially for these wordsin 1868 by Sr. George Elvey, who was the organist/choirmaster at Windsor Castle.

is a setting of Psalm 8. Linda Lee Johnson, Children’s Director forRedwood Chapel in Castro Valley, California arranged this anthem’s text from Psalm 8 and Tom Fettke, whowas the director of music there at the time, wrote the first half of the anthem. It was a few years later thathe added the “allelujah” part and published the anthem. This anthem was chosen to reflect on God’s love forus.

is considered by many to be the finest anthem by Jane Marshall, a choral composer fromDallas, Texas. It was chosen to be sung in today’s service to speak of our love for Christ in contrast to theabove anthem that speaks of God’s love for us .

was taken from and is from George F. Handel’s famousoratorio “Messiah.” William Caldwell, baritone soloist has been the award-winning director of the CentralState University Choir until his retirement this past spring. Last Sunday, he sang the complete role of “Elijah”in the Christ Methodist Church’s production of Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” and this week he agreed to sing thisaria to prepare our minds for today’s sermon.

is one of the great choral preludes of J. S. Bach. It is based uponthe parable of the 10 Virgins. Although it is more often heard in the period previous to Christmas and Christ’s“first” advent, it was actually composed to be a “Second Advent”prelude. The hymn this piece is based uponcan be found in our Hymnal No. 210. Notice the “trumpet” stop is used to make the call.

Things Jesus Never Said: “You Must Fear the Final Crisis”

I. Fears of the Famous

II. Fears of the Final Days A. Matthew 10:17-22, 26, 28, 31

But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whipsin the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are myfollowers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give youthe right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit ofyour Father speaking through you.

“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, andchildren will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. And all nations will hateyou because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.

“So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed,or hidden that will not be made known.”

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.”“So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

B. Matthew 24:4-13Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my

name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumorsof wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is stillto come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be faminesand earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will behated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and willbetray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who standsfirm to the end will be saved.

At the start of 1981, Melvin West, the Minister of Music, taught a class called "Arts & Ideas" on Wednesdayevenings that had over 200 attending. He had been very diligent to schedule organ concerts every othermonth by the world’s finest musicians. In February Mel moved to Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska to returnto the college environment. Bob Clarke was the senior pastor, but would move in July to pastor in Virginia.Walt Sherman was the Youth Pastor and Peter Bath, the young new associate pastor, was quickly makingfriends with everyone. He was chosen to serve as interim senior pastor with the help of head elder, TedRamirez; little did he realize that it would be almost a year before a new senior pastor would be found.

That year the early worship service was moved from 8:00 am in the morning to 8:45 and a different pastorand format than in the 11:00 worship was utilized. On February 14, Jerry Taylor and the choir fromShenandoah Valley Academy came and sang all the anthems that Melvin West had composed up to that time.Knowing that West was leaving, Winton Beaven invited Jerry Taylor to take on the role of Minister of Music. The timing just wasn't right and when Taylor declined the position, the church formed a Music Evaluation andSearch Committee which was tasked with the job of evaluating the music program and finding a new Ministerof Music. Don (and Maxine) Duncan were employed for one year to lead the music program until thecommittee’s decisions were made. Organists from the community would alternate playing for servicesincluding Wilma Meckstroth from Our Savior Lutheran, Pauline Swinehart from Good Shepard Lutheran, SueEllefson from Epiphany Lutheran, Greg Land from the Air Force, and Ken Lawson who was a visiting professorat the University of Dayton for a year. Several of Audley and Barabra Wasson’s piano students including EricMalson and Sally Etter (now Christman) played piano and harpsichord music for many services. Aside fromthe annual Rosedale Chorale concert on March 28 and Wintley Phipps, there were very few concerts duringthe rest of the year.

The Elders divided themselves into Ministry Specialties: Worship, Facilities, Finances, Sabbath School,Community, Service, Youth, Fellowship, Hospital Visitation, Music and Witnessing. On April 7 Walt & CarolSherman took a number of Spring Valley Academy students (along with 5 adult sponsors) on a Maranathatrip to Dominica. The youth raised money by doing a “Rent a Jurliteen” project. (A great idea that was usedby Jerry Taylor and Cherylin Peach 15 years later to raise money for a tour of the southern states by the85-member SVA Choir.) Al and Betty Brendel, founders of the Marriage Encounter, traveled to Japan tointroduce Marriage Encounter to chaplains and pastors in the Far Eastern Division. While there, theypresented five Marriage Encounter Weekends to couples in Guam, Singapore, as well as North, Central andSouth Philippines.

The Kettering Young Adults (KYA) under the leadership of Horace & Rosayle Kelley and Peter Bath werebecoming a thriving ministry. They were known mostly for their campouts to favorite spots in the tri-statearea but they also sponsored socials that were open for anyone to attend: a “Happy Days” banquet onValentine’s Day (attire was poodle skirts and fur collars for girls and leather jackets, greasy ducktails, whitetee shirts and blue jeans for the guys), a swim party and corn roast on Labor Day, a welcome potluck forKCMA students in September and in October they sponsored a bike-hike-games-hayride. The group alsoorganized several community service projects (leaf raking, window washing, lawn mowing, car washing.) Atthe Montgomery County Fair, they, with help from Kettering Hospital, manned a booth that offered freecomputerized health appraisals. Over 3000 people visited the booth.

The big wedding of the year was when Carolyn, daughter of John and Barbara Christensen, marriedpianist/singer Dale Creech on November 1. Of the 25 people that joined in 1981, three are still members:Carol & Rose Good and Perry Webster.

1982 may have started slow, the biggest event was instructors from Wildwood Sanitarium giving instruc-tions on natural remedies and the benefits of water treatments. KYA sponsored the Sweetheart Party, abowling league, prayer breakfasts and gym nights. This year they took “Smoking Sam” to their Montgom-ery County Fair booth.

In July, Ed and Valeeta Mottschiedler accepted the call to come from Frederick, Maryland and to as-sume the job as Senior Pastor. Peter Bath was then able to give his full attention to the young adults ofour congregation. Don and Maxine Duncan moved to Florida in July and Lee McGinty, who was an execu-tive secretary in Houston and a very talented musician, accepted the position of Minister of Music. Her firstSabbath was October 9. Her excellent organizational skills allowed her to start a children’s choir and revivethe handbell choir as well as manage the role of church organist and choir director.

On November 13, 1982, just 11 years after moving into our church building, the church debt was complete-ly paid, so the church celebrated. Former pastors, Demming, Bostian and Clarke returned for the occa-sion, each speaking at a different service. Don Bostian’s worship sermon was titled, “The Church as Cheese”which greatly amused the “church mouse” who continued to write a monthly column in the church’s month-ly “Intercom.” Mel West returned from Union College to play for the afternoon “mortgage burning” servicealong with Harold Lickey and the Andrews University Singers.

Now that the church debt was retired, the congregation had the means to expand the north parking lot, demolish the Manderly House and some trees, and landscape the Northeast corner of the church property.

With a full staff the church was again in full swing. The Pathinders attended the Camporee at Camp Mo-haven, the Youth moved from downstairs to the north entrance room where they’ve been ever since (N1),and the Bible Story Hour was held in the community. Tony Compolo did a three-part weekend seminar inDecember: 1) The Success Fantasy, 2)The Theology of Success and 3) The Role of Spiritual Ethics.
