Difficulty levelsI have divided the songs in different levels of difficulty to help you find the songs

more appropriate to your present level of playing. In some cases, some difficult songscan be made easier by strumming the chords rather than playing the original arpeggiosor simply by omitting the intro (that is often more complicate than the song itself). If thisis the case, there are notes at the beginning of each song.

The level of difficulty is marked using the belt system in use in many martial arts. Justbecause it will be cool to say you are a black belt in “guitar fu”. :-) Anyway, here are thelevels of difficulty, along with their meaning:

White Belt: Simple open strings chords (not C,G,Dm); first or second rhythm.

Yellow Belt: Open strings chords, third rhythm.

Orange Belt: Basic bar chords, power chords

Green Belt: Flatpicking or fingerpicking pattern on open strings chords

Blue Belt: Flatpicking or fingerpicking pattern on all chords

Brown Belt: Non-chord-based fingerpicking

Black Belt: Soloing, Improvisation.

At the end of the songbook there is an index organized by difficulty level.

2. When I left my home and my family

I was no more than a boy,

In the company of strangers,

In the quiet of the railway station,

Runnin’ scared.

Laying low,

Seeking out the poorer quarters,

Where the ragged people go.

Lookin’ for the places,

Only they would know.

3. Asking only workman’s wages

I come lookin’ for a job,

But I get no offers,

Just a come-on from the whores

On Seventh Avenue.

I do declare

There were times when I was so

lonesome,

That I took some comfort there.

La, la, la, la, la, la, la.

4. Now the years are rolling by me,

They are rocking evenly

And I am older than I once was

And younger than I’ll be,

But that’s not unusual.

No, it isn’t strange,

After changes upon changes

We are more or less the same

After changes we are more or less the

same

5. And I’m laying out my winter clothes,

Wishing I was gone,

Goin’ home

Where the New York City winters

aren’t bleedin’ me,

Leadin’Amme goin’

Ghome.

6. In the clearing stands a boxer

And a fighter by his trade,

And he carries the reminders

Of every glove that laid him down,

Or cut him ’til he cried out

In his anger and his shame,

“I am leaving, I am leaving.”

But the fighter still remains.

1. On theEmfirst part of the

journey

I was looking at all the life

There were plants and birds and rocks

and things

There was sand and hills and rings

The first thing I met was a fly with a

buzz

And the sky with no clouds

The heat was hot and the ground was

dry

But the air was full of sound

I’veEmbeen through the desert on a

Dadd6add9/F#

horse with no name

It felt good to be out of the rain

In the desert you can remember your

name

’Cause there ain’t no one for to give you

no pain

La, la ...

2. After two days in the desert sun

My skin began to turn red

After three days in the desert fun

I was looking at a river bed

And the story it told of a river that

flowed

Made me sad to think it was dead

3. After nine days I let the horse run free

’Cause the desert had turned to sea

There were plants and birds and rocks

and things

There was sand and hills and rings

The ocean is a desert with it’s life

underground

And a perfect disguise above

Under the cities lies a heart made of

ground

But the humans will give no love

I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway

I heard the mission bell

And I was thinking to myself

This could be heaven or this could be

hell

Then she lit up a candle,

And she showed me the way

There were voices down the corridor,

I thought I heard them say

GWelcome to the Hotel Cali

2. Her mind is Tiffany twisted,

She got a Mercedes bends

She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys

That she calls friends

How they dance in the courtyard,

Sweet summer sweat

Some dance to remember,

Some dance to forget

So I called up the captain

“Please bring me my wine.” He said:

“We haven’t had that spirit here

Since nineteen sixty-nine”

And still those voices are calling from

Far away

Wake you up in the middle of the

night,

Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California.

Such a lovely place,

Such a lovely face

They livin’ it up at the Hotel California

What a nice surprise (what a nice

surprise)

Bring your alibis

3. Mirrors on the ceiling,

The pink champagne on ice

And she said: “We are all just

prisoners here,

Of our own device”

And in the master’s chambers,

They gathered for the feast

They stab it with their steely knives,

But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember,

I was running for the door

I had to find the passage back

To the place I was before

“Relax” said the nightman,

“We are programmed to receive

You can check out anytime you like,

But you can never leave”

2. In restless dreams I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone,

Neath the halo of a street lamp,

I turned my collar to the cold and

damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the

flash of a neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence.

3. And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more.

People talking without speaking,

People hearing without listening,

People writing songs that voices never

share

And no one dared

Disturb the sound of silence.

4. “Fools” said I, “You don’t know

Silence’s like a cancer grows.

Hear my words and I might teach you,

Take my arms and I might reach you.”

But my words like silence raindrops

fell,

And echoed

In the wells of silence.

5. And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made.

And the sign flashed out its warning,

In the words that it was forming.

And the sign said, “The words of the

prophets

Are written on the subway walls, and

tenement halls.”

And whispered in the sound of

silence.
