Hassler and was commissioned on June 14, 2012 . The Ferdinand R. Hassler is a 124-foot coastal mapping vessel that was designed with a small water plane area twin hull (SWATH) for improved stability and sea keeping. This vessels primary function will be to provide support in NOAA’s nautical charting, buoy deployment & recovery missions, general ocean graphic research and it will also enhance our understanding of a marine environment that’s always changing along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. The F.R.H. is equipped with a high resolution multibeam & sidescan sonar system which provides 3D images of the sea floor. Data that’s gathered from this vessel will be used in various methods of research ranging from habitat mapping to marine archeology. Currently the Ferdinand R. Hassler just finished undergoing a complete inframe overhaul on both of their CAT C32 engines. Bay Diesel & Generator partnered with Carter CAT and were key in successfully completing this two engine overhaul. For this project Bay Diesel and Carter CAT utilized their expertise and training to remove and install new cylinder kits, new cylinder heads and new aftercoolers on both engines. The team was able to see this project as a whole, anticipate problems and work through them quickly to keep production on schedule. The overhaul on these two engines was complete in less than a month, allowing this vessel minimal downtime as it will be leaving Norfolk, VA to head to it’s homeport in New Castle, New Hampshire.
