I mentioned the new 2010 CKC Guide in my column last month, but I can’t resist

WHAT IS GOING on with all the products

originally developed by Stuart Mills of

MEV? The man has been a one-man kit

car production line, pumping out new

designs at a giddying rate of at least two

or three each year. There hardly seems to

be a show go by without another MEV

new model launch... and that’s just the

way we like it. We need people like this to

keep the industry fresh. But it’s also

becoming apparent that, rather like

another kit car designer extraordinaire,

Jeremy Phillips of Sylva Autokits, Stuart

isn’t keen to hold onto his children much

beyond pre-school age.

As we go to press (and unless he’s not

launched another model in the

intervening week or so) MEV now

currently markets just the Sonic7 and

Stuart’s latest derivative, the Missile.

It means his first mass produced kit

car offering, the Rocket, and his

subsequent Atomic single seater, have

moved onto new ownership, where

development of the Atomic’s three-

wheeler cousin, the tR1ke, is currently

coming to the end of its development

phase. All are now with Road Track

Race... or is that Evil Twin or... let’s start at

the beginning!

Paul Holmes launched Smarts R Us in

2001, with his good friend Liam

Wilkinson. Paul had spent the previous

25 years as a musician in a band called

Cut. The group was successful in Europe

(including a number one), but struggled

with chart success in the UK. While the

almost constant touring had been fun,

Paul was looking for a more settled future,

and when he saw a highly modified Smart

while in Europe, he thought there must be

a market for the same thing in the UK.

Smarts R Us went from strength to

strength, both in second-hand sales, but

also with the intended tuning and

modifying.

In 2004 there was a logical

progression when Paul and Liam teamed

up with German designer, Bernd

Michalak with his Smart based Michalak

C7. Kit cars weren’t as alien to the duo as

you might have thought, with Liam always

into kits having dabbled as a

manufacturer in the early ’90s with a

Lotus Elan inspired car called the Gemini

Sprint Elysse.

With the Michalak, all the hard work

had been done and the quality of the

product was beyond reproach, but a

Smart based kit car turned out to be a

tough sell in the UK, despite rave reviews

from all the relevant press.

So it wasn’t until 2007 when things

began to really ramp up in terms of the

company’s kit car involvement. Visiting a

kit car show, Paul got talking to MEV’s

Stuart Mills, who was just in the process

of launching his Rocket. Stuart reckoned

the car would accommodate almost any

engine and suspension package, so Paul

took him at his word and, later that year,

dropped off a Smart at his

Nottinghamshire base with the challenge

to fit the Smart underpinnings into a

Rocket. With small styling tweaks and a

turnkey only sales policy, the resulting

Zonta debuted at the MPH show later that

year. It created a lot of interest, but yet

again it was the meagre performance of

the Smart drivetrain that limited sales.

Having struck up a good rapport with

MEV, by the end of 2008 Stuart let on that

he was thinking of selling the Rocket (and

subsequent Atomic project) so that he

could concentrate on the new Sonic7 and

continue to develop other new products.

For Paul the timing could not have been

better, with the second-hand Smart side

of the business seemingly plateauing out

with the onset of cheap finance on new

car sales from the main dealers.

But taking on the Rocket was not the

work of a moment. Paul and Liam wanted

to do the job properly, and that meant

bringing all the manufacturing processes

(chassis fabrication and fibreglass


The MEV Rocket and Atomic now reside with the company thatestablished itself as Smarts R Us, marketed its own Rocketderivative, the Zonta, under the Evil Twin banner and now offersits latest acquisitions under Road Track Race... while retainingthe MEV name. From SS100 to E-Type, replicas of classicJaguars have always been popular. We’vegathered five of the best we could find.THE IDEA IS simple. Take a modern, cheaply available Jaguar saloon, remove its

mechanical package and use it to recreate one of the sporting models from the

company’s illustrious past. It’s an idea that’s produced a whole host of kit form

Jaguar replicas over the years – and we’ve gathered five privately owned examples

of the breed.

There’s the exquisite SS100 from Suffolk Sportscars. This car is so authentic it

has the seal of approval from Jaguar clubs, and Suffolk supplies owners of original

cars with spares. We also have two takes on the XK120 theme. The Autotune

Aristocat has been with us for over 25 years now and, while it doesn’t pretend to be

an exact replica, it’s clearly within the spirit of the original. Meanwhile, the Nostalgia

120 aligns itself more squarely as a close recreation of the Jaguar.

We were also delighted to find a Ram D-type which is currently manufactured by

Realm Engineering. However, rarity prevented us from uncovering a C-type replica –

despite offerings from Realm, Suffolk and Nostalgia. The most modern replica in our

line-up was the Challenger E-type. It’s no longer in production, but an active owners’

club meant it wasn’t difficult to find an exquisite example of the breed.
