1 SERENDIPITY Department of Adult Education StFX University Spring, 2016 Message from Maureen Coady It’s hard to believe—it has been over a month since we gathered in a Coady classroom to launch the April 2016 Foundations Institute. Carole Roy and I co- facilitated this FI, with invaluable contributions from Nancy Peters and Erin Careless. This was largely an eastern- learning group, with 8 students from Nova Scotia, one from Ontario and one from Calgary. Interests ranged from online to community learning, community and international development, youth advocacy, health education, human resource development and agriculture and food. Needless to say the group benefitted from the rich experiences and insights of their peers. Following the FI and the students’ departures and the final flurry of oral exams and thesis revisions, we had the pleasure of hosting graduating students and their respective loved ones at our convocation reception on Sunday, May 1, 2016. Congratulations to the 19 graduates! It is meaningful to witness this major life transition for students we have worked with and learned from over time. It was great to share in their joy and sense of relief upon completing the program. We are currently winding up for conference season with some of our team heading off to the annual Canadian Association for Studies in Adult Education (CASAE) in Calgary, Alberta to present their research and to network with other researchers from the field. If you live in the west you might consider attending. As the recipient for the John Dobson Memorial Award, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the John Dobson family as well as to the Awards Committee of the Department of Adult Education for selecting me as a recipient of the John Dobson award. My journey as an immigrant to Canada from Jamaica motivated me to consider the research topic, Learning in a Diaspora: Understanding the Learning Processes and Identity Formation of Jamaican Immigrant Women within the Canadian Context. I realized that my pre-migration experiences had colored the lens through which I saw the world and influenced how I situated myself within Canada (socially, economically and politically). And through these lens my research took shape; focusing on the challenges and resilience of six Jamaican immigrant women, as they navigated their way in Canada to find autonomy. According to Immigration Canada, one of the largest non-European ethnic groups in Canada are of Jamaican origin of which women are the majority. Lindsay, (2007). Kustec, (2012) noted that the Canadian Department of Citizenship and Immigration has funded programs to assist new immigrants with their integration into the Canadian labor market. However, the immigration and resettlement process has its challenges, as immigrant women experience stress, social isolation, language barrier, financial and employment constraints, lack of knowledge of services available, domestic violence, imposed gender roles and parenting which impact their mental health and erodes identity, self-respect and confidence (Rashid et al., 2013; Guo, 2009). Yet immigration has promoted an interconnectedness economically, socially and culturally between humans.

I conducted a qualitative case study of six Jamaican immigrant women located in Toronto, Ontario. I was able to hear their stories: How does the pre migration experiences of Jamaican immigrant women influence learning and identity formation in Canada? The study supported Mezirow’s (1991, 2000) argument that there are two types of learning: simple (building on existing knowledge) and transformative (relearning/acquiring Canadian values, norms and traditions). Their experiences revealed immigration as a ‘disorienting dilemma’ because of the lack of openness of the Canadian labor market to immigrants with professional experience gained in other countries; causing feelings of powerlessness, which affected decision-making and motivation. It demands the reshaping of identity where the immigrant is expected to embrace the Canadian identity; hence the ‘immigrant’ as a social construct. It also showed how past assumptions were challenged when new information was presented as they fought for autonomy and the importance of support and networking in the integration process.

I believe that there is a need for more research to understand the experiences of immigrant women to Canada and for adult education practitioners to explore what learning is involved in the immigrant experience. Hence my motivation to enroll in the PhD Peace and Conflict Studies program, to pursue further research in the learning process and identity formation of the immigrant woman within Canada. This work will lead to the creation of adult education initiatives in program development for immigrants to Canada. The award will assist me in my future research, to address the needs of immigrant women in order that they can further contribute to the Canadian economic and social culture.

As the recipient of the Marie Gillen Award I would like to sincerely thank both Dr. Marie Gillen herself and the Awards Committee for acknowledging what might have been considered rather ordinary experiences of women. Instead, they honoured a space to critically reflect and possibly re-evaluate some assumptions about the contributions that mothers make in developing their communities. This award also speaks to the inclusive nature of what counts as valuable knowledge and experience in this program. I started the Masters of Adult Education at StFX with a passion for community based learning, and, in particular, a desire to provide a platform for the growth and development of mothers. Once steeped in the program, I quickly realized that my practice was attached to a deep body of knowledge within the field of Adult Education. However, within the paradigm where I found myself theoretically aligned, my own experience was not reflected in the literature. I found a lack of attention afforded to the development process that mothers experience while engaged in community building volunteer work. As a result, I committed to exploring the learning dynamics of mother-initiated community service, as well as highlighting any transference of learning related to motherhood. I also felt compelled to use the arts as a powerful tool to generate information which may have been otherwise inaccessible. Early on in this program I found that artistic reflection was very generative in critically assessing learning and consciousness. As I worked through my reading list, I periodically used artistic reflection as a way of facilitating my own learning. In doing so I learned more about the process of artistic reflection which impacted my research design. Consequently, I included arts-making in my data collection to allow a space for mothers to reflect. My inquiry, “Mining Hidden Gems: A Comparative Case Study Investigating the Learning Dynamics of Mothers Engaged in Community Service,” entailed conducting interviews with six mothers who had initiated community projects designed to meet their own informal needs analysis. These projects filled gaps in school and community programming and were focused on issues that included the environment, the arts, technology, and spiritual development. I chose to include both mothers who worked outside of the home and those who did not by using community participation as the common lens through which to analyze the experiences of motherhood. The themes that are emerging from data analysis include the potential power that mothers can exercise at the location of community through vision and leadership. As well, there are certain skills and attitudes learned through motherhood which can transfer to community participation as a means of reinforcement and practice. Additionally, some of the skills and capacities gained by mothers in community service are similar to those gained through social work, public relations, project management, marketing, and communications. Lastly, motivations for role modelling can be teased apart to reveal expressions of agency aimed at the betterment of self, children, community, and society at large. As a community adult educator and learning consultant I look forward to further interaction with the concepts and knowledge that I am gaining through this program. I have found that this MAdEd program strikes a balance between guidance and allowing students to become empowered to walk their own path—an approach I hope to emulate. Michelle Kirby, Spring 2016 Graduate
