Dear Readers, !Having been with HCPC Europe from the very beginning in 2003 and having served the organisation as Executive Director for almost ten years now I feel that we have to face the challenges of nowadays lifestyle in a new way. Communication via social media has become essential to reach out to more people who may wish to be involved with our activities. We therefore plan changes in our organisation to face these challenges, to broaden our activities and to send out our message in new, more actual form and style. It’s therefore my intention to step down as Executive Director by the end of this fiscal year, yet remaining closely tied to HCPC Europe as a member of the advisory board and to hand over to the next generation. !As from July 1st 2015 Ger Standhardt, who has been working at the NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre as manager Knowledge Development & Projects will take over, however getting involved with the day to day business of HCPC Europe as from the beginning of the year 2015. As from this date you will receive information that he and I will put together for you. !This issue of our Newsletter will also inform you about the Columbus Award HCPC Europe assigned in two categories for outstanding pharmaceutical Packaging design on the occasion of a conference organised jointly with INFORMA life sciences and which took place in Berlin on October 28th. !Our Columbus award which we offer each year for outstanding packaging design reached attention far beyond Europe. Already in past years we had entries from non European companies and so this year again. The jury assessed all packs according the pugh matrix, a tool to compare the main characteristics which make a design patient centric and adherence supporting. For the first time we assigned the award in two categories, one for a commercial product coming to the market in early 2015 and one for a concept. (Read more on the next pages.) !On the same occasion Phill Marley presented the essence of a white paper focussing on patient-centric pack-design. The white paper was initiated by HCPC Europe. It is, actually being put together by experts, researchers and patients and will be published early 2015. !Furthermore I wish to invite you to have a look at our completely new web site which was specifically designed to be visited not only via your desk top PCs but take into account particularly the requirements in lay out and readability of smart phones and tablet PCs. !!Sincerely yours, !!Tassilo Korab Executive Director !!

Compliance NEWS Dear readers, in our last issue we launched the call for entries to our Columbus Award 2013. And   I’m   happy   to   tell   you   that   again   we   received   a   high   number   of   very        thoughtful new packs which are designed to support patients to stay with their treatment. The reaction to our call is very encouraging for our organisation and in  a  few  weeks  time  we  will  present  the  winner  of  this  year’s  contest  at  the  3rd              Annual Pharma Packaging and Labeling Conference organised in cooperation with Fleming Europe and which will take place at the Eurostars Hotel Berlin, Friedrichstrasse 99 on March 19th and 20th. In an interview I was recently asked: Which of the submitted solutions to the Columbus Award I personally liked the most / considered the most beneficial and why? And my answer was that it was hardly possible to reply to this question for a very simple reason: all entries which made it to the final selection to be awarded were of outstanding quality, each of them designed for a specific therapy and doing an excellent job for which they were awarded. What I particularly like about all of them is that they achieve their goals in completely different ways, one by using nothing but clever design, another one by implementing high tech. This makes it so interesting and exciting assessing the entries every year again. I will meet with the jury this week and will hopefully see many of you in March in Berlin. Bio Ger Standhardt !Ger Standhardt is manager Knowledge Development & Projects at the NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre. With more than 550 member companies (recycling, retail, packaging design, packaged goods manufacturing, supply of packaging materials, inks and machinery, services) the NVC focuses on innovation, information, education and serving the interests of its members. Ger studied Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology and graduated on the Airline Meal of the Future (March 2007), an application case for RFID in airline catering. Since his graduation he has been working at the NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre as manager Knowledge Development & Projects. He is responsible for the content of the training and educational activities, like the NVC Course Programmes in Packaging for middle and upper management, and for setting up and running new projects. He has been running the NVC Project Pharmaceutical Packaging Innovation since 2011. In this project NVC-members share innovative solutions with each other in order to come to improvements or new applications together. The main themes are accessible design, authenticity, and improving patient adherence. Other examples of projects are PASTEUR sensor-enabled RFID, and the NVC innovation project Web Retail Packaging. He is also in charge of organising Packaging Innovation Contest De Gouden Noot, of which the 27th edition took place in 2014. The winner of this competition is the most innovative packaging available on the Benelux market.

On October 29th HCPC Europe Chairman spoke about a white paper put together by renowned experts in packaging researchers and patients which will be published in early 2015.

At the recent Informa Life sciences pharmaceutical packaging conference held in Berlin, Phill Marley, Chair of HCPC-Europe, gave an informative and entertaining presentation on the subject of patient-friendly pharmaceutical packaging, and explained how manufacturers can improve the packs they offer. !In his talk, Phill referred to a forthcoming White Paper that will be published by HCPC-Europe in the near future and also mentioned some patient insight work that he has been involved with within pharma company AstraZeneca. !On the subject of the White Paper, Phill covered the issues that patients face when on medication, and discussed some problems that packaging can help to alleviate with the incorporation of some simple features, such as clear instructions, the use of colours and icons, along with the use of discreet, portable packs, and reminder aids. The paper aims to act as an “aide memoire” to those designing pharmaceutical packs.

Phill emphasised the fact that manufacturers of medicine packs need to put themselves in the shoes of the patients, and consider designing packs that assist in a patient’s journey back to wellness, rather than frustrating and hindering it. Leading pharmaceutical companies are now routinely carrying out patient insight work, listening to the views of their patients and building into packs features to aid the varying needs in different therapeutic areas. !Doctors, patients and manufacturers all want the same thing, which is effective medications, in great packs and happy patients, and this is achievable if all work together to ensure that each pack is working well for the patient. !The White Paper on Patient Friendly Pharmaceutical Pack Design will be available shortly, from the HCPC-Europe website at www.hcpc-europe.org.

HCPC Europe Columbus Packaging Award 2014

On the occasion of a Pharma Packaging Conference, organised jointly with INFORMA Life Sciences which took place on October 28th and 29th 2014 in Berlin, HCPC Europe assigned the Columbus Packaging award for patient compliance/adherence enhancing pack design in two categories, one for a product that is commercially already available and one that is a concept for products yet to be released to the market.

In the category of commercially available products the award was assigned to AstraZeneca for the pack design of Olaparib, a product which requires a very complex treatment and hence a best possible support of the patients. The award was made to AZ for the patient friendly packaging that has been developed for the novel PARP inhibitor product Olaparib, which is the first oral maintenance ovarian cancer treatment for post menopausal women, coming onto the market in 2015.

Speaking on behalf of the Olaparib brand team, Martin R o u s , G l o b a l G r a p h i c s Manager, said “The challenge was to help patients to be able to carry their medications in a discreet, ergonomic carrying case, which is easily carried in a pocket or handbag.

The pack design for Olaparib is exactly the right answer to the complex drug intake pattern of the treatment.

The early formulation of the product, developed on a fast-track programme to arrive on the market as early as possible, is in capsule form, and requires patients to take a number of capsules in the morning, and then again in the evening. To aid the patients with this regime the Olaparib new product team worked with product design agencies to develop a novel solution to enable patients to easily refill, and carry the medication with them, so that they are always in control of their dosing and their daily routines.

In the category of concepts the award went to Novartis for a wallet that uses symbols and colours in a way that is self explanatory and therefore helps the patient to remember whether and when to take the medication.

Considering that forgetfulness is a major factor in not taking the prescribed medicines Novartis came up with a pack that allows the patient the best possible control over the drug intake. “Our “adherence book packaging” was designed and developed for a fictive product within our team of “Packaging Design Management”. The invented brand name is “Your Brand 10mg”. The packaging supports a complex dose regimen of 4 capsules bid, meaning 2 capsules to be taken in the evening, 2 capsules in the morning. But could of course be redesigned to other regimens” explained Stefanie Meier, speaking for the Novartis Packaging Design Team.
