Well, the first year of RMR’s second 50 years is halfover and it has been an exciting year with lots of newpeople, a new track, some new habits and proce-dures and a National Parade in Keystone!

With so many new faces and a new track to exploreI thought pointing out some helpful resources is war-ranted.

First, of course, is the main RMR website; wwwwww..rrmmrrppoorrsscchheecclluubb..ccoomm.. Here you can find thelatest announcements, the most current calendar ofevents and links to all kinds of resources including;event registration, resources to help you drive better, take care of your car, past newsletters, classified ad-vertisements, forms and educational resources, pho-tos of past events and all sorts of other information. For new members I especially encourage you to fol-low the link to “info” to read a little about the varioustypes of events RMR provides, how to prepare foran event and what to expect once you’re at the event.

Next... follow this link to register on the RMR Yahoo Grouphttp://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/RMR_PCA/join.This group is used by members to communicate in-formally with fellow RMR members. Often, you canpost a question here and get answers or opinionsquickly from very experienced friends.

Now a word about a fun tradition that offers you thechance to pit your skill and commitment against yourpeers, The RMR/AMR Challenge Series! The Chal-lenge Series is a friendly competition between theRocky Mountain Region (RMR) and the Alpine Moun-tain Region (AMR) of the Porsche Club of America. These two regions cover all of Colorado.

RMR includes the northern and western portions andis headquartered in Denver. AMR covers the southernand eastern portions and is headquartered in ColoradoSprings. The purpose of the Challenge Series is to pro-vide an organizational framework promoting a spiritof friendly competition between our two regions.

The basic tenets of the Challenge Series are;

• Cars are divided into classes based on their capa-bilities. Generally, stock cars, modified cars and bymodel and year of manufacture. Of course, to pre-serve the fragile egos of some of our male memberswe divide the competition between men and womentoo.• To qualify for an overall year-end award in a class, you must participate in four events:• one Autocross• one Rally/Tour• two Driver's Education events, one from each re-gion

Your top seven event scores will be totaled at the endof the year, including your four qualifying events. Inaddition to the all important bragging rights, fabulousprizes are presented each year to the class winnerfrom each class at the Holiday Party held in Decem-ber.

See you out there!

After a one-year hiatus, whichto most of us seems like about3 years, the Rocky MountainRegion’s Club Race will beheld at the new High PlainsRaceway. Located a mere 50minutes east of Denver, CO,the new track is a delight to drive. Racing on it will be a joy for allinvolved. Those of us who have driven the track understand thecomplexity involved not only in negotiating the 15 turns, but also theamount of focus required dealing with the 12-16 gear changes perlap demanded by the tricky, hilly layout. In spite of the technical na-ture of the track, it affords ample passing opportunities due to itswide, smooth surface that offers Velcro-like grip in most places. Wehope to attract a great field from all the surrounding regions. Theword is out on High Plains, and a quick YouTube search will revealmany track day videos that are posted there for your enjoyment.

Of course the weekend will also offer up a two-day Driver’s Educa-tion event for the non-racing members of our club. A Friday Test andTune will also be available on an a la carte basis for those who feelthe need to perfect their line just prior to the weekend.

Point your browser to the Hyatt Place Airport for your PCA discountrate of $79 including a continental breakfast athhttttpp::////wwwwww..hhyyaatttt..ccoomm//hhyyaatttt//rreesseerrvvaattiioonnss//ffllooww66//ppllaaccee//pprrooppCChheecckk--AAvvaaiillaabbiilliittyy..jjsspp??ppiidd==DDEENNZZAA&&eexxttCCoorrppoorraatteeIIdd==GG--PPSSAA11.

A good time was seemingly had by all at AMR’s GT-Pueblo (pronounced GT-Pee-yeblo)Drivers Education event on June 6-7.

We had a great turnout (nearly 80 registrants), no equipment damage and good weather, except for an incessant strong wind. But the wind did keep us from overheating, and keptthe seasonal Miller Moths at bay everywhere but inside the tower, where Ron Martinez wenton the offensive.

Ron joined our Control crew - Kathleen Lennon, Susan Bucknam and Martha Vail - in thetower to handle timing and scoring for the timed runs on Sunday afternoon. Just prior tothe timed runs, we were treated to a drivers’ meeting briefing by Starter Kent Early, fea-turing RMR’s very own “stopwatch squirrels,” who once again came out of hibernation tohelp Kent demonstrate the timing procedure.

We had a few folks who took advantage of the “Taste of the Track” that we offer, joiningAMR Chief Driving Instructor Keny Whitright in a ride around the Pueblo circuit in his Car-rera Cup Car. This is a great way for anyone who’s interested to safely experience lappinga racetrack, and is available at all of our Drivers Education events.

The event was sponsored by GT Racing and Line-X Spray-On Truck Bedliners. Hank God-fredson of GT Racing participated in the weekend’s activities, and provided four $100 giftcertificates which were given away as door prizes. Thanks, Hank!

Tom Kautz and I would like to thank the volunteers mentioned above, and all the additionalvolunteers who made the GT-P event such a great success – Registrar Daphne Sipes, Cor-ner Worker Co-Chairs Joe Warren and Dan Taylor, Tech Inspector and Equipment ChairLoren Southard, Safety Chair James Wolcott, Top Tech Coordinator Brent Virts, Photogra-pher Bob Bills, and Nancy Warren and Barbara Gadbaw who staffed the gate prior to thestart of the event.

The summer months are heating up inall the regions, and I mean that in atleast two ways. Besides the obvious—since we’re now getting into thewarmer days and evenings—activitiesof all sorts are going on around Zone 9.Members of the Roadrunner Regionhave enjoyed their annual summer pic-nic complete with various friendly con-tests in horseshoes and bocce ball.

The Carrera region has had a very successful DE event in Alpine, Texasduring which they raised over $3000 for a local charity. The AlpineMountain Region, the Rocky Mountain Region and the IntermountainRegion have all had very successful DE events. The West Texas Re-gion is having one of its most active years in recent history. And lit-tle Llano Estado is still having its Region-sponsored monthly breakfasts.Zone 9 is abuzz with activity. June is especially busy. As I write this,I’m getting ready to drive to Colorado Springs for the last Parade Plan-ning meeting and the 26th Annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Con-cours d’Elegance in Littleton. No doubt there will be lots to do andmany great people to meet.

But the real story for this year is Parade in Keystone, Colorado. Be-lieve it or not, it’s the sixth Parade for Zone 9 in Colorado. Our Zonehas an amazing history of putting on spectacular events. Registrationsare remarkably strong this year, especially considering what couldhave been two mitigating factors: the economy and the distance Key-stone is from either coast. But that doesn’t seem to matter. Thescenery is fantastic, the driving roads are great and there’s just some-thing about an alpine glow—especially on several hundred finely de-tailed Porsches of all shapes, models, and colors—that brings thepeople in from all over the continental United States. And that’s notmentioning the people.

Of course we know that Zone 9 people are great. And we have tothank Walt and Kathy Fricke and all of their dedicated team for work-ing so diligently for the past five years to make this all happen. Butjust as much, each of us should look forward to acting as ambassa-dors for our guests from around the country. Many of them will be

coming up from sea level and will be hard hit by altitude. Be gentlewith them and remind them to go easy, use lots of sunscreen, andkeep hydrated. You’re going to make lots and lots of new Porschefriends.

I know that I’m looking forward to seeing many of the PCA friendsfrom around the country that I’ve made in the past several years. Andit’s going to be fun to show them around our great mountain roadsand share stories from all the various events we’ve been to. We’reall going to be very busy that week, but be sure to introduce your-self when you see me. I’m looking forward to meeting as many ofyou as I can. Don’t be shy. I’m easy to pick out of crowd. Just lookfor the giant with the bald head, goatee and shades. I know that itstarts to sound like a cliché, but it really is true that PCA is not justabout the cars, it’s about the people.

See you there!

Late Braking News!It is common for most drivers to try late braking in order to decrease their laptimes while driving on the track. However, this technique often causes a driverto lose their rhythm and, most importantly, their overall smoothness through a cor-ner. “Late Brakers” become anxious when they ignore their normal braking point, causing them to apply the brakes abruptly, upsetting the car at a critical pointwhile driving through a turn on the track.

The Late Braker believes he can cheat the system by entering the turn at a slightlygreater speed which theoretically will translate into greater exit speed and lowerlap times. However, the driver only succeeds in transferring too much weight tothe front of the car (unweighting the rear of the car) during the braking phasewhich often gets him in trouble–locking up the brakes and going off the track!Experienced drivers know that maintaining momentum in a corner is crucial tolowering lap times. Once momentum is lost by excessive use of the brakes it isvery difficult to regain, which is why the “point and shoot” method of drivingaround the track is detrimental to producing low lap times. This method is com-monly used by many cars with big V8’s (and V10’s) where the driver all but bringsthe car to a halt in a turn, points the car into the turn and jumps on the throttle, producing lots of wheel spin and tire smoke!

SSoo,, wwhhaatt iiss tthhee pprrooppeerr wwaayy ttoo ppeerrffeecctt yyoouurr ttuurrnnss oonn aa rrooaadd rraacciinngg cciirrccuuiitt??

To find the fastest way through a corner, we need to identify the correct “Turn InPoint” for a particular corner (e.g. Turn 1 @ Pueblo, Turn 4 @ HPR). The Turn InPoint is the key point in determining when the driver should perform all the otherrequired functions in negotiating a corner on the track. Once the correct point isfound, the driver can adjust initial braking points and trail braking to carry morespeed through a given corner.

Smoothness during braking is a fine balancing act which requires a certain amountof sensitivity from the driver. Being smooth does not mean pushing the brake pedaldown slowly. It requires the driver to get on the pedal quickly and squeeze thepedal firmly at first, then modulate the force on the brake pedal (i.e. threshold brak-ing) to get the car to the Turn In Point at exactly the same time each lap. The ini-tial squeeze is designed to allow the car to “sit down” as evenly as possible toallow maximum braking from all the four tires and to “load up” the suspension. Then, the driver modulates the brakes to get to the Turn In point at the proper timewithout using too much braking, which potentially could destroy precious mo-mentum through the turn.

Experienced drivers have become skilled at the technique of “loading up” the sus-pension to make the car “sit down” properly during the braking phase of corner-ing. This not only aids in braking by distributing the forces more evenly over thetires to prevent locking the rear tires, it also increases tire adhesion after the brakesare released and the car is turned into a corner.

To perform this neat trick, the driver must release the brakes, turn the car into thecorner and get back on the throttle before the suspension has a chance to unloaditself. The extra weight on the tires translates into extra grip for a short period oftime, which is part of the magic that can be performed by an experienced driveron the track.

I always thought it would be the cat’s meow to work in the car indus-try. Combining vocation and avocation. Coming to work and feelinglike a 10-year old in a candy store, every workday of the year. Sam-pling the product. Dreaming up new delicacies, to launch on a grate-ful public.

Well, in the early ‘90s I befriended Alan, who had been recruited to myemployer, a Fortune 500 company in Chicago, from General Motors, where he had been a chief speechwriter for Roger Smith and othersenior executives.

I was really curious; here was my chance to find out what it’s really liketo work in the car industry. So I asked him how he felt about the prod-uct. Was he a car guy? Was he a car guy among car guys? He saidyou learn to appreciate the product. Like you would with any companyyou work for.

I was astounded. Here we were, talking about cars, not toaster ovensor industrial shelving.

Turns out Alan drove a Buick sedan. He said he got a very good deal, through their employee ownership program. One day Alan came towork and said he knocked a side view mirror off the car, backing outof his garage. I shook my head -- I had always told my daughters, when they were learning to drive, to watch out for Buick drivers.

But I pressed on. Were there many gear heads in the company? En-thusiasts? Racers? People with Valvoline in their veins?

Appreciating The Product by Dick Balder

Also, remember that timing is everything when it comes to driving well on thetrack. Developing a good rhythm while driving at a DE event helps one be con-sistent lap after lap, performing each input at precisely the proper moment in timethrough each corner. If you are going to try braking at a later point going into aturn, you need to change your tempo, which requires a bit of practice.Driving well requires a certain amount of finesse; being smooth and consistent issomething all of us should strive for. All of these things contribute to the pleas-ure of driving your Porsche on the track at our DE events.

Appreciating The Product ... continued from pg.17bbyy DDiicckk BBaaddlleerr

19July 2009rmrporschenews

I guess so, he said. Some. Most were like him, he said. People who learned toappreciate the product.

Well, was it fun? Could you, say, call down to the motor pool and sign out a ZR1Vette for the weekend? I guess so, he said. And, hey, I bet they also had Porschesand other neat stuff around, for comparison purposes, and you could probably getyour hands on those cars too, right? Maybe, he said. I went back to my officeand shook my head. What a waste. I said to myself that it explained a lot. Andrectified a lot for me.

Like why anyone would build an Aztec. Or a Fiero. If you don’t get it, if you don’tfeel it in your bones, if every synapse in your nervous system doesn’t scream outfor … cool cars, what do you get? You certainly don’t get cool cars. There andthen, I knew that, if I worked there, I’d probably slit my wrists, from the frustra-tion of it all.

And that made me wonder about someone who was definitely “pure sang,” thelegendary product czar extraordinaire, Bob Lutz. He who flies his own helicopter, along with an ex-Czech fighter plane. The father of the Viper. He had to get it.And yet, one of his crowning achievements when he moved over to The Generalwas the Solstice, the sports car without a usable trunk, because the designers in-sisted on the flying buttresses at the back of the soft top, which used up what spacewas available when the top was stored. This is a car that scored second to theMiata in every comparison test ever devised.

Why? Because even Maximum Bob, vice chairman of the enterprise, could notpush an immovable object, in the form of product planners and bean counterswho had learned to appreciate the product. Despite all of Detroit’s economic woesof the last few years, we have seen a product resurgence of sorts. Take the ZR1and the rebirth of the muscle car, the Challenger and the Camaro, going head tohead with the Mustang.

The fact the ZR1 exists says that, deep within the bowels of the Ren Cen, at leasta handful of true enthusiasts live… or lived. Would the car have been green-lightedtoday? And the muscle cars; they’re better than a resurgence of the Mustang IIand the Vega. But, ultimately, these are old, myopic concepts, dusted off. Thesecars answer a question nobody’s asked, except maybe the crowd who’s harken-ing back to their own misspent youth, street racing to the Yoo Hoo shop.

No, I’m afraid we’ll never see the likes of the ZR1 again. And the re-minted mus-cle car will become another ill-conceived, semi-executed effort by people who havelearned to appreciate the product, conjoined with aging street-racers, all aiming ata 40-year old bulls eye that‘s no longer relevant to the enviro-enthusiast market. And if all this is true, no amount of government bailout money will save Detroit.

I read a recent road test of the new Porsche GT3. They said that, despite theCayenne and the Panamera, anyone who could and would build a GT3 still gets it.
