PIJF is committed to keeping our environmental impact as low as possible. This year we are excited to introduce a new variety of sustainability initiatives, including the printing of this program on recycled paper. Other initiatives include having a water station available, so be sure to bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated with free refills! We want to reduce single use plastics as much as we can, so we have said goodbye to straws at the State Theatre Centre locations, where biodegradable cups are on offer in the Courtyard. Indoor venues use glass.

WELCOME TO PIJF | 5

It is with great pleasure that we present the 2019 Perth International Jazz Festival. This is a labour of love and I am really proud and excited about what we have planned for you. We have artists from the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to perform for you!

We return to the State Theatre Centre of WA this year, as our festival hub. This venue provides audiences the opportunity to experience as much of our ticketed program as they can by easily moving from venue to venue. This year we will use the Courtyard and the Heath Ledger Theatre in a way that you may have never experienced before.

Our free community performance program is bigger this year through the generous support of Lotterywest, The City of Perth, The City of Vincent and ECU. We love our ongoing friendship with Lotterywest and City of Perth and we welcome our new partners: The City of Vincent and ECU. The City of Vincent will present free concerts in Birdwood Square and ECU, as our education partner, will help us present a program of future, current and past WAAPA and ECU students on the Perth Cultural Centre Wetlands Stage. There will

also be music found at The Bird, The Ellington Jazz Club and Downstairs at the Maj.

We will continue with our free In Conversations, where you can hear visiting artists speak about their work and lives and you will be able to get involved in the festival by joining Libby Hammer and the Jazz Club Choir to learn how to sing in a jazz choir.

2019 marks the seventh consecutive year of staging this annual festival and I would like to say a personal thank you and show heart felt appreciation to board members Dr Ian Martinus and Pina Caffarelli, who have beenwith the festival from the beginning and who have stepped down this year. The festival would not have survived without your passion and incredible effort. Thank You!

There is so much music from all over the world, coming to Perth this November - some you may know and some you definitely won’t. Come and take a risk with us to see as much music as you can, experience new delights, reacquaint yourself with old favourites and just have the best time! This festival is for you and we look forward to seeing you there.

DR. MACE FRANCISPIJF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Message from the Chair from the artistic director

Fellow jazz lovers! There is a lot to be looking forward to this weekend. Our amazing, hard-working Festival Director, Dr. Mace Francis, has once again pulled together a fantastic program filled to the brim with great music to suit all tastes and budgets. The genre of jazz is one that is incredibly diverse, and it is a privilege to be able to be a part of this exciting festival that will showcase everything from trad jazz, big band, solo performers, instrumentalists, vocalists, contemporary to avant-garde. Have a look at the program – there is absolutely something for everyone!

Of course, none of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our partners. We are incredibly grateful to all of our supporters, particularly during times when arts boards and not for profit organisations are continually trying to do more with less. Festivals like the PIJF aim to deliver a music filled weekend that highlights the amazing music that comes from Perth. We certainly punch above our weight in the Australian jazz scene, and I know you will enjoy

listening to our local artists perform, next to the amazing talent we have brought to you from over East, as well as internationally.

This year has seen our board embark on significant change. Part of good governance, in my mind, is characterised by a mixture of experienced and new faces on a board. I am thrilled that our board this year has seen some extremely talented younger faces come to the table, which makes for a positive, energetic team, all working together to deliver you this amazing weekend. Thank you to my fellow board members. You have been fantastic to work with.

Now sit back and enjoy this weekend of jazz. I look forward to seeing you at a gig or three.

At age 24, Veronica Swift is recognised as one of the US’s top young jazz singers. Veronica grew up on tour with her parents, renowned jazz pianist Hod O’Brien and celebrated jazz singer and educator/author Stephanie Nakasian. Veronica recorded two albums as a child – one at age 9 with Richie Cole and her father’s rhythm section and her mother, and one at age 13 with saxophonist Harry Allen. She has been performing ever since in venues around the world and will visit Perth for the first time performing her latest album.

Her sound, charisma and ability to channel the spirits of Anita O’Day, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald will delight Perth audiences for the first time.

‘Lost In A Dream’ - The Musical Life of Chet Baker.

Prolific Australian trumpeter, singer, and composer/arranger Roscoe James Irwin (The Cat Empire, The Bamboos), presents a hauntingly beautiful journey through the sounds and songs of one of the most revered, yet tragic figures in popular jazz history. Once upon a time considered the James Dean of Jazz, Chet’s struggle and decline led to what was ultimately a tragic story. Yet the legacy of love and West Coast Cool he left behind has resonated for decades since.

Joined by a jazz trio and 20 piece string orchestra, Irwin will present his own gorgeous re-workings of Baker’s classic material, with all the cinematic romance, heartbreak, and soul of 1950s California.

Ben Winkelman is a jazz pianist and composer from Melbourne, now living in New York City. His writing explores diverse musical interests filtered through a jazz perspective: Afro Cuban, gospel and classical music, with a focus on Latin rhythms in odd meters. His music has been described by Downbeat as “one big, interconnected thing of beauty”. He is touring Australia to celebrate the release of his fifth album Balance.

Joining him are long term colleagues Ben Vanderwal on drums and Sam Anning, winner of the 2015 National Jazz Award, on bass. He holds a Master of Music degree from SUNY Purchase College, and has toured in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Fumio Itabashi is a highly-regarded jazz pianist from Tokyo who has been active since his professional debut in 1971 with Watanabe Sadao. He was a member of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine in the 1980s and has been a formidable band leader since his debut. He evokes the spirit of Art Blakey as band leader sharing the stage with young talents as well as established musicians.

The Fumio Itabashi Quartet features long time collaborator and legendary Japanese alto player, Eiichi Hayashi with Fumio Itabashi Trio (FIT!) bassist Takashi Seo and Singapore-based Australian drummer Darren Moore. The Fumio Itabashi Orchestra will be an exciting 10 piece large group collaboration between the quartet and Australia’s most adventurous improvisers.Fumio Itabashi: pianoEiichi Hayashi: alto saxTakashi Seo: bassDarren Moore: drumsDaniel Susnjar: drumsSimon Jeans: guitar

Now based in the US, Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Gedera, Israel. He graduated from WAAPA in 2008 and immediately began accumulating awards and prestigious performance opportunities.

He was the 2015 winner of the Freedman Fellowship Award and in 2014 won the Barry Harris Piano Competition in the US. He has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.

Meretrio was founded in 2004 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with one goal: the exploration of the diversity of popular music. Since its founding, the trio has continuously expanded its creative work: Brazilian rhythms fuse with elements of jazz and chamber music.

The trio has played at major festivals in Brazil and Europe, including: Bavarian Jazz Weekend, Fête de la Musique, Jazz’n More, Mikulassky Jazz Festival, SESC Sao Paulo, and Jazz Na Fábrica.

In 2019, the Meretrio started a new project exploring the possibilities of mixing loop-machine with the acoustic trio. The key question is whether it is possible to superimpose the sound of trombone and guitar using electronic devices to achieve a tonal richness that exceeds the usual possibilities of the jazz trio (guitar, bass and drums). Using a loop-machine and digital effects, melodies and harmonies can be combined in real time. The result is completely new textures and musical sounds.

Junkadelic will host free instrument making workshops for kids in the beautiful surrounds of Birdwood Square. All equipment will be supplied, so just roll up and participate to make your very own shaker, flute or drum.

You’ve heard of Pub Choir, so now get ready for Club Choir, the jazz equivalent! For three consecutive days during the Perth International Jazz Festival, you are invited to join us in a jazz version of the community singing craze that is sweeping the nation and uniting hundreds of strangers in the process! In each session, jazz singer Libby Hammer will teach you a jazz song in three- or four-part harmony and then we’ll sing through it a couple of times. We’ll do a different song at each session, so you can come along for all the sessions, or just one - it’s up to you!

On the Sunday afternoon at 5pm, participants are also invited to perform the songs in public along with Libby and a small band at Birdwood Square Community Stage.

It’s a completely stress-free environment, so there’s no need to worry if you think you can’t sing. This is a fun activity run strictly for the love of music. There will be no sheet music, so you don’t need to have any musical knowledge at all - just a desire to come and give it a go! Bring your crew, or just rock up and be ready to meet some new friends in this jazzy singalong.
