Dear Incarnate Word High School Community,

As we enter this spring season we are reminded of the option God made to become Incarnate among us. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word pray for each member of the community asking God to

bless, protect and walk gently with them.

We have been delighted and impressed by the accomplishments of the “Shamrocks” as they showed their prowess in the sports of volleyball and basketball. We rejoiced as we learned of the number of students who have been accepted to universities across the country. We gloried in the accomplishments of students who shone in the areas of Math and Science and our spirits soared as we listened to the heavenly music of the Madrigals.

Perhaps our greatest pride came with the knowledge of the hours of service provided to the community. It evidences hope for a brighter future for our world. Especially noteworthy was the remarkable response to Hurricane Harvey. Without much ado everyone chipped in bringing relief to many and hope to all. We now know that the next generation is in good hands because of the seeds that have been sown in the homes and at Incarnate Word High School.

We believe that Incarnate Word High School has an incredible future ahead. We have only begun to see what is possible. All of this points to the compassionate and dedicated leaders and teachers whose work is laced with love and the desire to promote peace and equality among God’s people.

May the God who journeys with you, remain with you as you continue to accomplish great things for God and for humanity. You are truly incarnating the Word and may you always be faithful to the wonderful lessons learned here.

Sr. Teresa Maya, CCVI Congregational Leader

Dear Friends of Incarnate Word High School,

We are pleased to present to you the 2016-2017 Annual Report. This report will reflect many of the rich traditions and sisterhood that make Incarnate Word unique and special. Our goal is to empower strong, confident and well-rounded leaders that will go out and change the world.

We are excited for all of the incoming students and to see what the future holds for all of our young ladies. It is amazing and beautiful to see all of the legacy Shamrock students walk the same halls that their mothers, aunts, and grandmothers walked. It shows the love and dedication that our alumnae have for our school.

The academic program at IWHS remains strong and rigorous, ensuring that our young ladies are well prepared for university and beyond. The dedicated faculty and staff are committed to nurturing the whole child and this is evident in our successful alumnae. It makes us all proud to have graduates return back for a visit or class reunion and express to us how Incarnate Word truly prepared them. Programs such as our dual credit courses as well as our modular schedule offer additional opportunities for educational growth and experience.

Through the dedicated efforts of our staff and Shamrock supporters, overall giving has increased and this has afforded opportunities for our young ladies to receive a college preparatory, faith based education. We are so thankful to our community for believing in Incarnate Word High School and for their faith in the program.

The students and staff of Incarnate Word High School pride themselves on being servant leaders, as God has called us to be. We are God’s hands here on earth and this is what we continue to share with our community. As you will see in this report, we have offered more opportunities for local and global service projects that are changing the world.

We are thriving and continuing to nurture strong leaders here at Incarnate Word High School. Thank you so much to all of our dedicated supporters. We are proud to call you a “Friend of Incarnate Word” and may God continue to bless each and every one of you.

Continue to let your light shine for the world to see!

Praised be the Incarnate Word, Jennifer M. Salazar

ServiceHebrews 6:10 “For God is not unjust, such that he would forget your work and the love that you have shown in his name. For you have ministered and you continue to minister, to the saints.”

Service is a pillar of our community, below are some examples of our acts of service at Incarnate Word High School:

Q Debbie Quinones, English teacher (current Enrollment Director), and Michaela Schneider ‘17 were selected as the 2017 honorees of the CCVI Spirit Award. Mrs. Quinones promotes the mission, charism and core values of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word by arranging multiple community service opportunities for the girls at IWHS. She leads by example as she accompanies and serves alongside the students at several area community service centers. Michaela also models the mission and core values of the CCVI Sisters as a member of the High Honor Roll, secretary of the NHS, a member of Teen ACTS at St Pius X Catholic Church, where she has also served as spiritual director and co-director, worked with Teen Life, Bible Study and many other community service activities including CAMP Camp, the Food Bank and UIW Headwaters, to name a few.

Q The Freshmen class participated in many service activities including working in the Community Garden at the SA Food Bank, Haven for Hope and at UIW’s Light the Way volunteer day. The Sophomore class continued their traditional support at the Davidson Respite House. (A home for children with developmental disabilities or for those who have been taken into state custody after reported abuse or negligence.)

Q Geometry students created placemats with beautiful geometric designs as a part of their in class construction unit. They also included heart-warming messages and quotes with their designs for Meals on Wheels community seniors.

Q Mr. Richard Boyd was recognized as the Incarnate Word High School 2017 Archdiocesan Teacher of the Year through the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s Department of Catholic Schools. Mr. Boyd teaches economics, AP macro-economics, government and government AP.

Q The American Red Cross Club received the 2016 Young Philanthropist Award at the Tobin Center-Red Carpet Centennial Gala. The ARC club members distributed 1,300 backpacks and school supplies to students in need and participated in community outreach events such as conducting a fundraising telethon for the Eagle Pass flooding with KSAT 12 & Univision. They also packed 3,000 meals at the SA Food Bank and distributed toys to the children at Joint Base San Antonio.

Q Mr. Tony Uminski and Mr. Louis Lubbering were recognized at the IWHS Veteran’s Day Observance for their military service.

Q Forty-two students were selected to the Shamrock Ambassador Society, including two international ambassadors. After submitting an application, meeting eligibility requirements, passing an interview and training session, they were inducted in an official ceremony. Ambassadors assist in hosting Shadow students, community service projects and in other recruitment activities and events.

Q Pax Christi members volunteered their time at H.E.B.’s annual Feast of Sharing.

AthleticsProverbs 4:26-26 “Let your eyes look straight ahead: fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.”

Athletes make up 55 percent of our student body and they participate in one to three sports per school year. Talent selections are made from sport-specific and multi-sport athletes, using all three phases of training and implementing our core values; all of which are inherent to the ongoing success of our well rounded athletic program. Our athletic program further produces athletes that go on to compete at the next level, including schools such as Rice, LSU, Alabama A&M, UIW and Texas A&M Kingsville.

Matthew 18:20 “For wherever two or three are gathered in my name, there am I, in their midst.”

Young women at Incarnate Word High School are guided on their individual spiritual journeys that allow them to grow deeper in their faith. These are some of their Community of Faith experiences:

Q Our campus ministry program offers many opportunities for community involvement. Monthly offerings include Liturgies, special prayer services, adoration, community rosary, spiritual formation and service opportunities. Students are invited to join music ministry, become peer ministers, participate in class retreats, and other campus ministry events throughout the year.

Q IWHS celebrated Dia de los Muertos remembering the faithful departed by displaying cherished photos, favorite foods, personal items, marigold flowers, sugar skulls, songs, poems and candles in honor of their loved ones on a large altar.

Q Continuing to heed Pope Francis’ call for “interfaith dialogue,” Pax Christi USA welcomed guest speakers from various paths of faith and thought from such diverse beliefs as Mormonism and Islam. PC USA has also been a prominent advocate for the IWHS Fall and Spring Open House events.

Q In celebration of Black History Month, IWHS hosted speaker Mayor Ivy Taylor and held the 4th annual Gospel Fest. Participants shared in a combination of uplifting gospel singing, inspirational poems read by poet Andrea Sanderson, and a presentation by special guest, Dr. Trevor Alexander, Protestant Chaplain in the Office of Mission and Ministry at UIW.

Q An Advent prayer service was held during the month of December to kick off participation in a Lenten service project benefiting Visitation House and Casa Raises. As a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Visitation House, provides safe shelter for women and children. The Freshmen and Seniors helped by collecting laundry detergent, soaps, towels and other personal needs products. The Sophomores and Juniors collected for Casa Raises, a shelter for women and children seeking asylum.

Q The 135th Anniversary Celebration Mass was celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 23 on the front steps of IWHS followed by a reception provided by the PTO. The event was attended by many Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word who have an IWHS connection: Sr. Marichui Bringas, Sr. Maria de la Luz Romay, Sr. Maria Terisa Flores ‘62, Sr. Eleanor Geever, Sr. Alice Holden, Sr. Joan Holden, Sr. Rosita Hyland, Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, Sr. Romona Lopez, Sr. Rose Ann McDonnald, Sr. Audrey O’Mahony, Sr. Margaret Rose Palmer, Sr. Christine Stavinoha, Sr. Corine Walsh as well as parents, students and friends.

First Timothy 1:3-5 “…the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”

Q The Annual Silver Tea was hosted on May 7, 2017 by the Alumnae Association at the University of the Incarnate Word McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. The event was chaired by Silvia Lozano Smith ’95. Attending Seniors, their families, faculty and alumnae enjoyed the Senior slideshow with an afternoon tea catered by La Madeleine. Twenty-Eight Alumnae served as table hostesses. Dr. Andrea Kelly Gonzalez ‘88 was the mistress of ceremony and the guest speaker was Julia Gonzalez Reinhart ’86, VP of Human Resources at Valero.

Q The Alumnae Association recognized eleven alumnae scholarship recipients who collectively received awards totaling $19,000.

Q The winning ticket for the “Name Your Prize Raffle” named Danny Khalil the winner of $5,000 in gift card prizes. The “Name Your Prize Raffle” concludes at the Silver Tea bringing the limited entry raffle to a close after raising more than $10,000 for scholarships. Danny’s mother is Rose Marie Heusinger ’84 and his sister is current Shamrock, Anise Nellis ’19.

Q The Alumnae Association continues to host many events and programs throughout the year, including the Annual Dance, Phonathon, Athletic Green Outs, Memorial Mass, Fiesta Medal Sales, and Silver Tea, to encourage school spirit and alumnae giving.

Q The Fall Phonathon helps update alumnae contact information and increase our annual giving dollars. This year’s team of 101 student callers made more than 3,000 calls securing more than $25,000 in three days.

Q The Alumnae Association introduced a new tie pin in 2016 to recognize students whose families have made IWHS a family tradition. The tie pin features interlocking Shamrocks that symbolize a special Shamrock connection by a grandmother, mother or aunt to a granddaughter, daughter or niece. This year we proudly honored 83 generational legacy students, making up 16% of our student population.

Q The Shamrock Legend Award, established in 2006 and presented during anniversary celebration events was awarded to Mary Guerrero-Muñoz ’87 at the 135th Anniversary Celebration Mass held on campus on Sunday, Oct. 23. Mrs. Guerrero-Muñoz was also the recipient of the Mother Columkille Colbert Award in 2015, the highest honor bestowed by the IWHS Alumnae Association.

L E T Y O U R L I G H T S H I N E O NSERVICE - INTEGRITY - ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE - COMMUNITY OF FAITH - STEWARDSHIP - COMPASSION

CompassionColossians 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Listed below are some examples of the IWHS community modeling our core value of Compassion:

Q Sisters Trail, is the route originally taken in 1869, by the three founding Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, from Freeport, TX to San Antonio, TX. Coach Fricke once again successfully completed the 250 mile cycling adventure retracing this route. This momentous event took place in honor of breast cancer awareness month in October and benefited Friends of Christus Santa Rosa Foundation Mobile Mammography Program.

Q World Geography teacher, Mr. Paul DuBay took the challenge, offered by St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and had his head shaved by, Lyndsey Wyatt ’18. “Team Lyndsey” raised $2,140 benefiting children’s cancer research in San Antonio hospitals.

Q Student Council started a tradition last year by raising funds for Inner City Development’s Thanksgiving 365 fundraiser. Continuing the tradition, they presented a check for $1,000, to Sr. Francine Keane ‘59, CCVI, a volunteer for Inner City Development.

Q The World Geography classes visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio, where they toured the museum, participated in group discussions and attended a presentation by Holocaust survivor, Mrs. Rose Sherman Williams. Mrs. Williams shared her story and left a few messages for the girls; “tell your parents and siblings you love them”, “don’t be a bystander” to bullying or violence, and “believe in yourself”.

Q Girl Power club teamed together with Days for Girls International to assemble over 40 feminine hygiene kits to be delivered to girls and women of countries in need. It is a Girl Power goal, to abolish cultural stigmas keeping women from work and school.

Q Following the Archdiocese request to collect cans of food to benefit of the “40 days of Lent Project”, participating Shamrocks were successful in stocking the shelves with plenty of canned corn, green beans and mixed vegetables.

Q During the month of November the Seniors hosted a Christmas party for their Little Sisters. During the event the Seniors presented the class of 2020 with $600 to start their Freshmen treasury and each Little Sis received a novelty gift.

Q The Class of 2020 and teachers Debbie Quinones and Alexis Villareal sponsored a cyberbullying awareness week. The class submitted anti-bulling awareness proposals and hosted guest speakers that included, Mrs. Molak from David’s Legacy foundation, State Representative Diana Arevalo ’00 and attorney Jimmy Carter from the “Don’t Bully Me project”. The class raised funds to make a donation to David’s Legacy Foundation and proudly sported t-shirts to promote awareness for the cause.

Q Pax Christi held their first time bake sale with proceeds benefiting the Thirst Project. An organization whose objective is to bring safe drinking water to communities around the world.
