Introducti~n

the 56 years between 1875 and 1931, the Kansas State HisI N torical Society issued three series of general publications: Kansas

Historícal CoUec:tions (17 volumes), Biennial Reports (27 volumes), and Publications (three volumes). A master index to the material of historlcal interest in these volumes has been a long-planned, but slow-to-evolve, project of the Society.

This compilation is the work of Louise Barry, a member of the staff. It is completely new; no indexes in individual volumes were used.

Emphasis in indexing has been on direct, quick-reference entries. TitIes of artieles, with only an exception or two, have been ignored, but the subject content of the articles, the authors' names, and the names of individuals, have beeil given thorough coverage. Selectivity in indexing place names was necessary to malee the index a reference tool and not a catch-all for valueless entries. Cross references have been used extensively, both for subjects and names.

Sorne of the problems encountered in this work are discussed by Miss Barry as follows:

The Kansas Hisrorical Collec&ns, 17 volumes (volumes one and two bound together), were published between 1881 and 1928. According to the title pages oE too first ten, these were Transactions 01 the KaR$tU State Historical Society • • ., but the name Kansas Historical Collections appeared on the back-strip oE each. The first eight volumes ineluded the Society's annual meeting reports. This material in so Ear as it relates to business affairs oE the Society, has been omitted. These pages, then, in the volumes reEerred to, have not been indexed: Cl-2:1-110; C3:15-100, 110-189; C4:1-237; C5:3-29; C6:1-34; C7:1-27; C8:118-126.

In comparing the executive minutes oE territorial govemors published in volumes Eour and five with the original manuscript minutes (now in the state archives)", it was discovered that many errors and omissions had been made in the transcription. This is particularly true in the sections containing lists oE territorial counly and township officers. In Eact, the inaccuracies are so numerous as lo make the lists totally unreliable: An attempt was made to enter misspelled names correctly in the index, and to indicate variations in spelling.

The 15th through the 27th oE the Society's Biennial Reports contain artieles and items oE historical interest, as well as sorne biographical sketches, all of which have becn indexed. It is perhaps simpler lo say what has becn excluded, than to state what has been indexed in the Reports. As the titlc indicates, the bulk oE thc contents oE each is devoted to Society afIairs--reports

[ 3 ]

oE the secretary, treasurer, and board oE directors. These have Dot been indexed. Also omitted are the names oE donors, and the lists oE !Cansas newspapers. It should perhaps be DOted that Fox's artiele on the Seventh Kansas cavalry in BR16:107-122 is also in the Collectiom (C11:238-253); that Martin's artiele on monuments, memorials, etc., in BR16:83-10a is also in C11:2S3281; that Berryman's artiele on southwest Kansas in BR25:87-96 is also in C11:561-570; and that Connelley's artiele on the Medicine Lodge peace treaty in BR26:52-57 is also in C17:601-606.

OE the Publicatiom 01 the KaR$tU StatB Historical Society • • ., volume one was printed in 1886. In content it is identical with the KanstU Hi8torlcal CoUectiom, volume 3, pages 195-469 (that is to say, it contains biographicaJ sketches, and executive minutes oE Territorial Covernors Reeder and Shannon; addresses oE Covernors Stanton and Denver, in 1884; and proceedings oE the Kansas quarter-eentennial celebration at Topeka, 1886). Volume two (S. W. Eldridge's recollections oE early days in Kansas) appeared in 1920. Volume three (third and last) oE the Publicatíons was W. H. Stephenson's dissertation on the political career oE James H. Lane, published in 1930.

The Kansas State Historical Society is pleased to submit to its members and friends this Comprehensive Index. It is a longneeded tool and guide to the storehouse of information in the 47 volumes 1930.

of the Society's series publications from 1875 through
