In the De Lavaud process the molten metal is gradually input into a steel mould rotatingat high speed. The process is characterised by its quick cooling that gives a finersolidification matrix and a more homogeneous metallurgical structure.

Heat treatmentAfter being spun the PAM-GLOBAL® pipesare placed and rotated in a heat treatmentfurnace at 950°C and then gradually cooledagain. This step is essential to the processas it transforms the cast iron's metallurgicalstructure. The reduction of iron carbides andthe increase of ferrite content considerablyimprove the mechanical properties of castiron and reduce its surface hardness. Thegraphite of the cast iron resulting from theSAINT-GOBAIN PAM process formsclustered graphite, halfway between lamellarand ductile iron.

To provide clearer guidance on thechemical resistance of S range indomestic applications,SAINT-GOBAIN PAM has carried out20 additional tests to the EN 877Standard requirements on detergentproducts and special products ofcommon use. The tests were carriedout on samples, under the temperatureof use recommended by themanufacturers and where it wasrelevant, up to 70°C since hot wateris normally supplied in dwellings around50 - 60°C. After stopping the test, thepipes and fittings shall be washedimmediately to eliminate any stains andthe coatings shall be examined withregard to blistering and rusting bothaccording to ISO 4628-2 and 3.(Accepted levels according EN 877)The duration of the test would potentially be equivalent to the extrapolation of a real chemical stress undergone during 7or 10 years (a 10 to15 min stress per day). This test method however simulates a more severe stress since the samples liein direct contact with the solution, the temperature being maintained and the test includes no rinsing over its duration.
= Resistance
The coatings principle is to offer consistent performance for pipes, fittings and accessories without any weakpoints. So that you can be sure of the products you specify and to fit important changes recently noticed on fluidscarried – disinfectants, hygiene products… - SAINT-GOBAIN PAM regularly makes assessments on coatings. They are continuously upgraded to provide high protection level against corrosion, and long-lasting propertiesto protect the pipe work lifespan.
The inner coating of the PAM-GLOBAL® S pipes has been designed to withstand most chemical stress and resistabrasion. Made of an epoxy-resin regularly assessed, this coating benefits from continuous improvement to meetwaste water drainage increasing constraints. Its smooth surface enhances flow capacity and prevents incrustationsand deposits. The inner coatings of pipes and fittings have been paired for PAM-GLOBAL® S system consistency,to withstand equivalent stress and to ensure no weak link could affect the pipe work durability. The coatings performance of PAM-GLOBAL® S pipes and fittings exceeds by far EN 877 requirements.

Quality marks are voluntary. Their scope is aiming at fitness for purpose and at valuing theproduct in a customer-supplier relationship.Unlike Quality Marks, CE marking is mandatory to be allowed pass into the European Unionand between member states.Made compulsory by the European Directive for Construction product, its scope is limited tohealth and operational safety. CE marking is a minimum precondition to guarantee thatconstruction products are not dangerous for the European consumers and users. It sets thesame safety criteria shared all over Europe and is mainly intended for the authorities in chargeof market control.Reaction to fire alone was retained as safety criterion for drainage systems (see Fire protectionchapter).Based on EN 877, CE marking became mandatory on cast iron drainage products leavingthe factory, from 2009 September the 1st.For Construction Products, reaction to fire is assessed on the basis of standardised tests anddescribed in a EUROCLASS classification. For complete ranges – pipes, fittings, couplingsand accessories SAINT-GOBAIN PAM has obtained the excellent EUROCLASS ranking:A2, s1-d0, now mentioned on the products.EUROCLASS being based on test methods and a classification harmonised throughout Europe, the scoring can be used to compare materials and product performances you specify.

Voluntary Quality Mark GEG RAL-GZ 698
Being self declared, EN 877 is only proved when third party validated on all criteria andperiodically tested.Recognised quality mark, GEG (Gütezeichen Entwasserungstechnik Guss) has set forth alist of testing criteria and quality requirements far exceeding those included in EN 877.Meeting all these requirements is the first and foremost condition to obtain a RAL-GEGmarking. Third-party inspections are carried out by MPA-NRW twice a year.

Material Classification
PAM-GLOBAL® pipes andfittings are made of cast ironwith lamellar graphiteaccording to DIN EN 1561.This material conforms to theClass A1 Building Materialaccording to DIN 4102 inGermany and is noncombustible.
Fire Load
Cast iron pipes and fittingsare considered noncombustible.Their fire loads do not needto be taken into account. The “Fire load” of a productis defined as follows: it is thequantity of energy releasedduring combustion. It highlydepends on the type andquantity of flammablematerials used for the productmanufacturing.Formerly, a fire load of 7KWh/m was authorised inemergency corridors.
This regulation is no longerapplicable due to the generalPipe Systems Guidelines, whereby fire loads are nomore permitted onemergency corridors oremergency exits.
Comparison: 1 kg ofpolyethylene (PE) producesa fire load of 12 KWh. 1 kgof heating oil has a grosscalorific value of 11.7 KWh.*
Smoke Development
In the event of a fire, thePAM-GLOBAL® pipe systemremains sealed; smoke thatcould develop inside thepipes is dissipated via therooftop main ventilation.Comparison: 10 kg ofpolyethylene (PE) orpolypropylene (PP) producesapproximately 23,000 m3 ofhighly toxic smoke,
consisting of carbonmonoxide, carbon dioxideand soot.*
Thermal Expansion
The thermal expansioncoefficient of cast iron is only0.0105 mm/m.°K.Under a temperature changeof 50 K, the expansion of aDN 100 pipe of 10 m lengthis only 5.3 mm. Thisexpansion is absorbed bythe couplings.* Source: Bernd Prümer“ Brandschutz in derHaustechnik” Gentner Verlag.

Fire Protection
For fire safety in a building, the major responsibilityrests with the project manager who must respectthe regulation in force. In buildings at risk, suchas multi-storey buildings, materials with reducedflammability should be selected to applyprecautionary principle.Reaction to fire is the instant behaviour when afire breaks out, its propensity to ignite or feed afire. For drainage systems to obtain CE marking,“Reaction to fire” requires a mandatory certificate, stipulating their EUROCLASS classification, issuedby an accredited and independent laboratory.
Cast iron as a material itself is classified as A1in the Euroclass classification for reaction to fire.In tests carried out by the CSTB accreditedlaboratory, SAINT-GOBAIN PAM cast iron ranges(pipes, fittings and accessories including elastomergaskets and coatings) received the followingexcellent Euroclass ranking: A2 -s1, d0.For smoke emission and the production of flamingdroplets, the SAINT-GOBAIN PAM productsrespectively achieved the highest possible rating:s1 and d0.So, cast iron remains one of the safest drainagematerial for fire safety.
Fire resistance is a construction component'sability to withstand fire for a given period of timeand to retain its serviceability in the event of fire.
SAINT-GOBAIN PAM cast iron has a melting pointover 1000°C. In most cases it requires noadditional fire protection. SAINT-GOBAIN PAMhas carried out a non exhaustive series of testson its cast iron pipe systems in order to makeprecise recommendations for fire resistancerequirements up to 240 minutes (4 hours).
SAINT-GOBAIN PAM cast iron pipes arenon combustible, they do not feed the fire, norgive off either gases or smokes liable to delay firefighters or damage other equipment.

(Cert. No: P-MPA-E-07-028)
E.g. in production plants, parking lots, warehouses, regardless of noiseinsulation
For combustible pipes(HDPE, PVC, PP etc.)larger than DN 32, firespreading measurementsand test results are anabsolute requirement, sothat the fire regulationcan be applied.
• Slab penetration shallbe limited to thetechnically required size.• Slab sealing for openhoppers shall be made ofnon combustiblematerials, e.g. cementmortar, concrete ormineral wool.If mineral wool is used, itmust have, in accordancewith MLAR, a meltingpoint ≥ 1000° C and arelative density of at least90 kg/m3.
For acoustic requirementsbeware that if cementonly is used, the sealingcan cause sound bridges.• According to MLAR,shafts used for insulationor sound insulation, inthe vicinity of the ductssurface or walls with firebreak requirements, shallalso be made of mineralcasings of the abovementioned quality.

Waste water and rainwater drainage generates airborne and structure-borne noise between rooms, which usually result from a mixed flow, whenthe pipe is filled with water and air.Under such circumstances a pipe will radiate noise outwards to anylightweight ceilings, cupboards and similar areas wherever it makes contact.
What Exactly is Plumbing Noise?
Airborne noise (A)When a material is dense and thick, thepipe walls prevent air transmission;as is the case with cast iron which offersintrinsic acoustic properties.
Structure-borne noise (B)When the noise produced within a pipeis not transmitted by the air, theresidual noise is transmitted bystructural vibrations. Whilst themass of the cast iron limits thevibratory level, the junctions andfixing to the building will propagatenoise. Objective: Dampen thevibrations at the connections withthe solid structure.

Noise Insulation
EN 14366 complying test results obtained for a flow rate of 2 l/s and a wall thickness of 250±50 kg/m2 (IBP laboratory)
Requirements definedby DIN 4109 and VDI
Drainage installations mustbe designed in accordancewith DIN 4109/A1. Thisstandard defines theexpected requirements fornoise control with the aim ofprotecting people inresidential rooms fromunreasonable nuisancecaused by soundtransmission.
DIN 4109-1989 specifiesthe expected requirementsregarding the maximumnoise level forrooms requiring noiseinsulation. These includeliving rooms, bedrooms, workrooms and classrooms.
Such requirements do notapply to room partitions
within the same dwelling. As a result of its endorsementby the building authoritiesDIN 4109/A1 is now madecompulsory under public law.
However, it only sets aminimum requirement. The VDI Guidelines 4100define 3 sound insulationlevels (SSt).These 3 levels can cover allsound insulation requirementsand they are to be promotedbetween all actors involvedin building projects includingfurther occupants on the basisof private law.To avoid subsequent disputesit is highly recommended thatthe sound insulation levelrequirements (SSt) should bestipulated in the contracts.

The PAM-GLOBAL® RAPID NGcoupling, single bolt, allows fast andreliable installation. SAINT-GOBAINPAM’s new design ensures optimizedwater-tightness and pressureresistance and better than evercorrosion resistance.
A wide stainless steel collar allowstolerance during installation.
Its profile, with edges directedtowards the pipe, encases theelastomer gasket and prevents anyrisk of it being expelled duringtightening. In case of fire, the rubbergasket is not exposed to flames. When fully tightened, the couplingensures a built-in electrical continuity, without any added clip.

Simple InstallationWith GreatestAccuracy
PAM-GLOBAL® pipes up to DN300 are generally supplied in3 m length which can be cut tolength.Where the pipes are cut onsite, they should be cut cleanand square and burrs removed.Cut ends should be re-coatedwith the EXTREM 1 onecomponent touch-up paint.
Installation InstructionsFor PAM-GLOBAL®
RAPID Coupling
1. Push the suppliedassembled coupling onto thepipe spigot up to the middlespacing ring of the seal.
2. Push the next pipe spigotinto the other end of thecoupling.
3. Tighten the screw to “nullgap” position, completelyclosed, with a ratchet spanneror an electric screwdriver
PAM-GLOBAL® pipes can be readily cut by the use of a powered disc-cutter, or with wheel cutter.Ensure correct grade of disc appropriate to cast iron are used, and that cutting wheels or saw blades are changed ona regular basis. Angle grinders are not advisable for cast iron, but should they be used, make sure a secure hold ofthe pipe is made. Warning: Chain cutters or snap cutters should not be used to serve the purpose
Cutting Techniques
The pipe cutter from Ridgid or Rothenberger (see above) ensure fast, neat and square cutting.
Reciprocating saw can be used but is not so well adapted.

PAM-GLOBAL® Application Guide
Suspended pipe works shallbe secured with fix pointsevery 10 or 15 meters soto prevent disconnection.
On vertical runs, wastewater or rainwaterdownpipes, the bracketingaims at preventing thepipework to fall over dueto its own load. The downpipes shalllikewise be secured by twobrackets spaced no morethan 2 m, including one inthe immediate vicinity of abranch.
To address both pipe loadand end thrust force, astack installed through openhoppers must be securedwith fix points-like stacksupports-to prevent the pipeworks from falling over. For buildings up to 5storeys and a pipe diameterDN 100, we recommendto position the first stacksupport pipe at the base ofthe first floor, and thenevery subsequent fifth floor,
in case of a standardaverage 2.5 m betweenfloors, or more generallyevery 15 m. The pipe workillustrated here indicatesthe basic support andbracketing rules.PAM-GLOBAL® includes acomprehensive range ofclamps and accessories tosecure your cast ironpipeworks. These accessories areavailable in 3 sizes tomatch different load levels. For further technical detailsplease contact us.PAM-GLOBAL® linesexperiencing pressure: Nongripped waste-water pipessubject to internal pressureloads must be secured sothat they do not undergodislocating forces are notpushed out of axialalignment. The adequate longitudinalfrictional connection canbe achieved withPAM-GLOBAL® grip collars. Please contact us for details.

Bracketingrecommendations forcast iron pipe works.
Pipework stabilityA pipework is submitted todifferent forces liable toaffect its stability; for castiron, the bracketing systemis designed to carry onlythe weight of the pipe andits content (see table 1 onpage 19).The bracketing rules aim atkeeping the pipeworksstable, based on the pipeloads. Pipe supports andfixings shall be adaptedaccordingly .Basic rules: The pipesbrackets should beregularly spaced and thedistance between twobrackets should generallynot exceed 2m.The pipes of 2 or 3 mlength should be supportedwith two brackets. Shorterpipe lengths should be fixedwith one or two brackets, depending on the diameter(or pipe load). The brackets should beuniformly spaced in relationto the junctions betweentwo elements. The distanceon either side of a couplingshould not be longer than0.75 m.Horizontal runs must beadequately secured atchanges of direction andwherever a fitting isinstalled.

PAM-GLOBAL® Syphonic Roof Drainage System
PAM-GLOBAL® EPAMS®
Syphonic Roof Drainage System
The EPAMS® high-capacitysyphonic roof drainage systemwas developed approximately 35years ago in Scandinavia. It ismainly used for draining roofswith large surface areas, such asfactories, storage facilities, shopping centres, as well asbuildings used for sports, leisure, transportation and administration. The EPAMS® system is atechnically mature developmentin roof drainage. It complies withthe DIN 1986-100 (version: May2008). Meanwhile, pressure-flowroof syphonic systems, laid withinthe PAM-GLOBAL® S pipe system, are being used by thousands inGermany. The EPAMS® roof drainage systemhas been taken into account byPart 1 since 1988 and Part 2since 1995. In traditionalrainwater drainage systems, afterthe rain falls to the roof, it flowsto the roof outlet or gutter viapartially-filled drainage pipes.Inside buildings, the maximum fillfactor in rain water pipes is 0.7(h/d = 0.7) according to EN12056. This fill factor means thattraditional rainwater drainagesystems must have adequate pipeventilation.Traditional flat roof outlets formwater eddies and cones of air.The undesired air infeed is affectedby the Coriolis force (eddyforming) and also depends on theatmospheric pressure, gravity andthe Earth's rotation.
The air in the middle of the outletis sucked in through the eddies. This lowers the outlet's capacitylevel. In contrast to open channeldrainage (according to EN12056), pressure-flow roofdrainage pipes systematicallyoperate at the designed rain yieldfactor. When the pipe system hasreached maximum capacity, thegeodetic height difference betweenthe roof outlet and the transitionpipe is used in open channeldrainage in order to overcomeflow loss. This is why smallerdimensions are required than inopen channel drainage systems. The pipes can be laid withoutgradients under the roofconstruction due to the typicaloperating conditions of thesesystems. There is no need for a wide-spreadbranched pipe network. As a rule, our EPAMS® high capacity roofdrainage system, with all of itsbenefits and advantages, offersextremely economical solutions. However, the pipes can only reachmaximum capacity using specially
designed roof or channel outlets, which prevent air infeed into thepipe when the calculated volumeof rainwater has been reached. With the EPAMS® system the airis prevented from flowing (air conebuildup) into the pipes when thecalculated rain volume has beenreached. The applicable regulation for thecalculation of pipe sections forrainwater drainage is EN 12056.However, the syphonic drainagesystem as a possibility for roofdrainage is merely mentionedhere. Further details on the designand construction of such drainagesystems are not provided. This iswhy the DIN 1986-100 hasuniversal validity. This directivesets out guidelines for planning, calculation and construction, whilethe corresponding systemcomponents of individualmanufacturers have fundamentaldistinctions with regards toassembly and mounting directives.
