Introduction

The process of Improvement Planning in Kentucky is used as the means of determining how schools and districts will plan to

ensure that students reach proficiency and beyond by 2014. The process focuses school and district improvement efforts on

student needs by bringing together all stakeholders to plan for improvement, by focusing planning efforts on priority needs and

closing achievement gaps between subgroups of students, by building upon school and district capacity for high quality

planning, and by making connections between the funds that flow into the district and the priority needs in schools.

Your school's plans for improvement must be based on careful and honest analysis of data, address all content areas, and

clearly address gaps in student achievement.

Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by

which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful

to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder

engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student

learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and

challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school

perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it

provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Description of the School

Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include

demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated

with the community/communities the school serves? South Laurel Middle School is located in London, Kentucky and is one of two middle schools located within the Laurel County School District.

Our school is made up of approximately 1,100 students in grades six, seven, and eight. Within each grade level there are three instructional

based teams. The course line up on each team consists of a six period schedule which includes five core classes and one exploratory class.

The school switched from a 7 period day to a 6 period day this year to provide more time to provide instruction. At the start of each school

year students are assigned to one of the three teams on their grade level. Each team is made up of a language arts teacher, mathematics

teacher, reading teacher, social studies teacher, and science teacher. Our arts and humanities as well as our practical living teachers are

assigned to one of the various nine instructional teams but teach students on all teams throughout the year. We are considered to be a rural

school district with a free/reduced lunch population of over 60%.

School's Purpose

Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the

school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. South Laurel Middle School has a simple purpose that is best summarized by our Mission statement/motto, "Success for all, no exceptions,

no excuses". We offer a wide range of courses that include advanced placement in mathmatics and acceleration from one grade to another

for specific subjects. We also offer daytime and evening tutoring through ESS funding and additional tutors through our Gear UP grant. The

aim of Gear Up is to get students into college, who may have never seen that as a possibility for them and get them planning early. We also

make use of computer assisted tutoring and enrichment.

Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement

Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for

improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. South Laurel Middle School has an award winning band, choir, cheer and dance teams. We have excelled in several sports as well. We are

most pleased with fine academic programs and the steady progress we have made on KPrep. We are also proud of our increased use of

instructional technology, such as I-pads, student response systems and laptops. We are also proud of pro-active approach to student safety.

Increased parent involvement in our school through our innovative parent programs, AIM and All-pro Dads which meet monthly. Also we

have seen a marked decrease in student discipline referrals.

We want to continue to improve our KPrep scores and to decrease our gap students scores. Our goal is to be one of the top middle schools

in the state. We hope to become a top 10 school in the state of Kentucky.

Additional Information

Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous

sections. We are very proud of what a students have achieved and will continue to achieve in the future. We have a large number of students over

60% who recieve free/reduced lunch, which make their achievements even more remarkable. Also, the staff at South Laurel Middle School

are dedicated to the profession and their students and continue to seek new ways to reach their students.

Data Analysis

What question(s) are you trying to answer with the data and information provided to you? What does the data/information tell you?

What does the data/information not tell you? We are seeking to answer the following? What can we do to strengthen our academic program and increase achievement for our students.

What can we do to increase the safety of our students? How can we decrease gaps between regular education students and gap students?

The information has told us that we need to continue to refine our curriculum to eleminate missing pieces of curriculum. We need to continue

to refine pacing maps and lesson plans. We need to practice more with our student on emergency drills and eliminate gaps in sercurity. We

need to continue to new ways to reach gap students and offer non-traditional means to reach them. The information does not provide the

how of doing any of these things.

Areas of Strengths

What were the areas of strength you noted? What actions are you implementing to sustain the areas of strength? What is there

cause to celebrate? We did note many strong areas including in our scores as well as student safety. We did show increases across the board with students

scoring proficient or distinguished. We were able to indentify many teachers who were doing an outstanding job preparing their students. In

the areas of school safety, it was noted by our SRO that our lockdown procedures were very strong and our pro-active approach to school

safety was commendable. We are continuing to refine our strong areas and use those teachers and procedures as a guide for improvement.

We do celebrate being one the highest performing middle school in our region.

Opportunities for Improvement

What were areas in need of improvement? What plans are you making to improve the areas of need? We need to improve our scores in all areas, but especially with gap students. We are working creating a special class to help catch up gap

students who are behind. We are also working at identifying areas of need by analysis of MAP tests and interim testing. This will help us to

focus on the missing pieces of instruction and bring these students closer to grade level faster.

SY 2012-2013 Page 12© 2012 AdvancED www.advanc-ed.org

Conclusion

Reflect on your answers provided in the previous sections. What are your next steps in addressing areas of concern? Our next steps are the development of more accurate interim testing that will diagnose the missing concepts and skills needed by gap

student. Also we are developing a more useful analysis of the available data. We are also looking for ways to provide more help for special

needs students with our limited resouces. In the area of student safety, we are getting help from local law enforcement to analyze our

procedures and refine them as well as beef up the physical safety of the building.

Improvement Planning Process

Improvement Planning Process

Describe the process used to engage a variety of stakeholders in the development of the institution's improvement plan. Include

information on how stakeholders were selected and informed of their roles, and how meetings were scheduled to accommodate

them. Stakeholders were given the chance to respond within the school through surveys by e-mail and PLC committees. These groups included all

teachers and staff. Parent groups were included by advisory groups, SBDM groups and the PTO. This was accomplished during their

regular meeting dates and times. Student concerns are polled weekly through the use a questionaire that is done every Monday. Describe the representations from stakeholder groups that participated in the development of the improvement plan and their

responsibilities in this process. The different stakeholder groups involved a cross-section of all parents from all backgrounds. As were represented in advisory groups,

SBDM council, AIM, All-pro Dad, and the PTO. They made suggestions and voiced concerns about KPrep scores and school safety. Staff

are represented by elected member of SBDM council and PLC groups. Every member of the staff is on one or more of these groups.

Activities and strategies in the plan come from the teachers directly as well as from parents. All students are surveyed for suggestions every

Monday. Explain how the final improvement plan was communicated to all stakeholders, and the method and frequency in which

stakeholders receive information on its progress. The final improvement plan will be share with the staff in a staff PLC. Students will be made aware of the plan through core classes on their

teams. The plan will be shared with community through regularly scheduled meeting and by being place on the school website. Progress

will be reported at SBMD meeting and those minutes will be place on the school website.
