California would be admitted to the United States as a free state

The rest of the land gained from Mexico would be divided into New Mexico and Utah territories. Popular votes would determine whether those territories would be free or slave territories

Slave trade ended in Washington D.C.Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act forcing

northerners to return escaped slaves to their Southern owners
