William Shakespeare was a master of connecting with the emotions, a reason why his plays remain so relevant and popular with modern audiences. They have also provided a fertile ground of inspiration for artists and this exhibition will feature responses to some of Shakespeare’s best-known plays by artists such as John Singer Sargent, Sir John Everett Millais Henry Fuseli, Tom Hunter and Antony Sher. A marriage of theatre and art, the exhibition will feature a series of theatrical installations in which visitors can also hear commentaries or extracts from plays read by RSC actors.

Organised in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) as part of the national celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Britain in the Fifties:Design and Aspiration

Picasso on PaperSat 15 October – Sun 11 December

4

Sat 9 July – Sun 2 October

At the heart of Britain in the Fifties is the relationship between the individual and the object. Taking an average British young couple as its starting point, the exhibition will explore the new design experience of this exciting and innovative decade. Focusing on the domestic interior, and the social and cultural landscape across the country – from social housing to parks, and the excitement of travel to representations of the home through the press and media – discover how crucial the role of design was in shaping the brave new world of the post-war period and its effect on everyday life.

Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) was an extraordinarily inventive and prolific printmaker, producing over 2,000 etchings, lithographs,

aquatints and linocuts during his lifetime. Drawn from the collection of the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, this exhibition

traces Picasso’s evolving artistic vision through decades of experimentation in technique and subject matter.

Picasso fully explored the potential of the printmaking as a creative medium in its own right, using each new graphic technique to find

new ways of developing the themes he loved: bull-fighting, the circus, portraiture and works inspired by the Old Masters. The 70

works in the exhibition dating from the 1920s to the 1960s reveal the remarkable range of Picasso’s printmaking and the technical

innovations that drove his creativity.

Exhibition organised by the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf

This exhibition will present 44 watercolours of Queen Victoria’s 1855 visit to Paris, some of which

were given to her as gifts, others which she later commissioned herself. These previously unseen

watercolours form an important snapshot of official art and taste in the Second Empire. Made by French

artists in a medium often closely associated with British art, they tell the story of the patronage of watercolour in France, a medium unfamiliar to a

general audience at the time.

Introducing our

Our Collections and Park

Celebrate 300 years of Lancelot ‘Capabilty’ Brown and his lasting landscape legacy. Compton Verney’s park was re-landscaped by Brown in 1772 and many of his typical features still exist. Following funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are delighted to be able to tell this story of Britain’s most famous Landscaper through the restoration of pathways and unique Chapel and new interpretation throughout the grounds and Welcome centre. You will also be able to discover more about the wildlife inhabitants with board walks around the lake, new bird hide and dipping pond.
